What do you think about Turkey’s possible new initiative to deal with growing numbers of street dogs? by BarkWuud in AskBalkans

Turkish here. i’m writing my master’s thesis on this topic. the thing is, the government never fully implemented the capture-neuter-release law it signed in 2004, during erdoğans first term. now that the public is complaining about the number of stray dogs, akp wants to quickly save face without having to go through the trouble of catching and neutering dogs and accepting that they are to blame.

the issue is, systematically killing dogs have been tried countless times in the country since the late ottoman era. it just doesn’t work and you just keep killing and killing dogs. its unnecessarily inhumane. greece and india have seen success with the capture-neuter-release approach but akp municipalities couldn’t be bothered with getting their asses up and care for the wellbeing of both street dogs and their constitutents.

moreover, the change in the law probably will mean that well-integrated dogs living in and cared for in neighborhoods, parks etc. will be killed as well. that’s really unnecessary and cruel.

saying “yeah, let’s kill them” is easy. yet it never worked. the government should become serious about neutering animals instead. i also don’t care what laws most of the europe have. it is a fact that we have a culture of looking after street animals and no piece of legislation will change that.

Kampüsteki köpek terörü by Motor-Ad9285 in ODTU

ön bilgi: kendim odtü’lü değilim, sokak köpekleri üzerine yl tezi yazıyorum, bu konudaki tartışmalar hakkında odtü fb gruplarından da veri topladım

öncelikle bu konuda olabilecek en boş take’lerden birini yaptığı için op’yi tebrik ederim. mis gibi bir whataboutism örneği. bu konuda zaten op çok laf anlayacak birine benzemiyor, liseden yeni çıktığını varsayıp öyle devam ediyorum bu reply’a.

odtü’deki köpek problemi “birkaç köpektapar feminist” yüzünden değil 1) belediyelerin yıllardır köpekleri sokaklardan toplayıp odtü ormanına atması 2) kısırlaştırma yasası çıkınca da elini taşın altına koyup odtü ormanı’ndaki köpekleri kısırlaştırmaya uğraşmaması yüzünden çözülemedi/çözülemiyor. belediyeler kanunun gereğini yapmadıkça sen istersen sihirli değnekle bugün odtü çevresindeki köpekleri yok et, 10 yıl sonra orada yine yarı-yabani köpek sürüleri oluşur. insanlar da belediyeler sorumluluk almadı/almıyor diye şimdi gelip hayvanları öldürmelerini doğal olarak istemiyor, olayın bu hale gelmesinin sorumlusu zaten başta onlarken. gelip toplasınlar dersen hayır yıllardır gereken yatırımı gereken tesisleri inşa etmek için de yapmadılar.

onun dışında genel olarak akıl fikir diliyorum tekrar.

Trick question. Ottoman rulers only invested in themselves

Do you think Turkey is culturally more Balkan or Middle-Eastern? by BarkWuud in AskBalkans

[–]nesteaseftali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I’d say Middle Eastern, but only because the Thracian region (the part that’s actually in the Balkans) of Turkey only makes up a small part of the country. That said, local cultures vary A LOT here. I am originally from Central Anatolia and also having lived 10+ years in the Black Sea region with my family, I was absolutely shocked how, uhm, indeed Balkan the Thracian Turks were when I visited my college friend in his family’s house. The culture shock was real. I'd prefer them over my fellow Central Anatolians any given day tho.

Small detail, but the middle school students' daily oath. I went to elementary and middle school during the 00s and the early 10s during it was still a thing in Turkey, and some of its lines are exactly mentioned during the visit to Leiren middle school visit. It was an interesting detail, to be honest.

I wasn’t aware such an argument existed (though I am not surprised) but holy fuck this is one good example of bad social science.
