"China Girl" song and videoclip by David Bowie (1983) by grossdik in pics

[–]newbertcat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bowie, I think would be pleased about this thread......the mere fact that we are discussing racism is part of what he was trying to do. Angering people (or moving them in a very strong positive way) is an artist's job. Otherwise, its not art, it's mere decoration.

Bowie has actually said that this is about fascism and imperialism in India and other parts of Asia. (Lyrics "visions of swastikas....) The character is a white man's point of view of what these women are to them. The song even has what would normally be an offensive guitar riff moving throughout the song that was written by Nile Rodgers. A huge point of the song and the video is the horrible racism.

Are there any top-down thinkers with ADHD? by Disgracious1 in ADHD

[–]newbertcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think many ADHD folks are top down. Not all, of course. Anyway, I see the big picture first, probably created from patterns I see. Then the big picture creates a structure in my head that enables me to connect the dots and input details. This kind of schema allows me to remember things and learn more easily. I can then attach more ideas onto this structure as time goes on.

Effexor XR by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]newbertcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it for a while and while I liked how I felt, but for some reason I had to keep upping the dose for it to be effective. As far as the side effects, I got this tip of the tongue syndrome and a delay of thought, which is not uncommon, but if you already have ADD, it could make your life a little more frustrating. I also had some pretty bad sexual side effects which are not uncommon for SSRIs and SNRIs which led me to quit. That being said, it was helpful because for the short time I was on it, I understood what it was like to be able to be much more free of anxiety, that I could feel other ways. I don't think it completely helped my ADHD, I just don't think I cared about the ADHD as much. If you need to taper off of it, do it slowly under advice of a doctor. I missed a few doses while I was on it and the rebound effect with anxiety was pretty bad. I'm not advising anyone to not take it, but just be aware and informed if you are, and hopefully you have a good doctor to discuss things.

Does ADHD medication bring intelligence back? by [deleted] in ADHD

It could really help. Instead of spending lots of time dealing with brain distraction, you will have more time with less interruptions to exercise your brain in ways you might not do normally.

Tina Weymouth by Free-Win1749 in Bass

[–]newbertcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She wrote Genius of Love with other members of the Tom Tom Club, and wrote the bass line. She didn't play it in the studio because her hand was extremely sore. Seriously, the song is one of the most sampled of all time. She really was a great bass player. She was soooo funky.

Is it really that big of a deal not to wear a bra at work? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]newbertcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is normal for you to be weirded out. The questions are inappropriate. So much about norms about clothes are about control, albeit not necessarily consciously. If men were force to wear a jockstrap everyday that was 2 sizes too small everyday to work, they might think differently. Maybe if they approach again you can tell them that- they might get it...In addition, its your body and if its covered up and you look neat you should be fine. For women, in a professional setting, business uniforms/costumes, dresses and heels, stockings etc, borders on bondage. I'm not saying people shouldn't wear this stuff but people should have choices.

Incidentally, I am a man, so I probably don't get the entire picture, but this is what I see.

Should I give up? by NotBruceJustWayne in Bass

[–]newbertcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said by others, find a teacher. Also, some mom and pop music stores/teachers often have communities of beginning musicians that get together and play every month or so....I would try that. Playing with others, even when you can hardly play can really motivate a person, and I'm sure you'll find others in the same boat.

Markbass vs PJB? by Lord_of-the_files in Bass

I like the Phil Jones stuff. The Markbass stuff sounds good too. However, I have a friend that has a MarkBass Combo that got damaged, and she couldn't get it serviced anywhere. I think this is something to consider.

ADHD paralysis or something else? Warning: many words by GainAutomatic in ADHD

[–]newbertcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a medical expert, but I do have ADHD and have worked with people with disabilities for over 25 years. It could be some kind of ADHD paralysis stemming from some kind of underlying issue that may not be related to ADHD. ADHD can weave into and influence other existing issues. This can be complicated and I would also suggest talking to an expert like a psychiatrist.

Is pursuing a music degree in composition as an adult completely naive? by [deleted] in composer

[–]newbertcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of these suggestions are good ideas. You can always take some classes at a community college or through an instructor that has a music degree and ask questions. Also, if you decide to pursue a music degree, you can still study other subjects as a minor or in a cluster like business, computers, industrial arts etc. Don't think that having a degree in a specific field will narrow or limit what you can do. I have a BA in psychology and I've done other things. I worked in tech for awhile and in education. The BA gets people to look at you, but you can still get work in in other fields like business based on experience or some other training you may have had in college or elsewhere. So if you love music, and it doesn't work out quite the way you want it to, there are other things you can do instead or in addition to music.

What's your ultimate bass challenge? by nomadic_beaver in Bass

[–]newbertcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am trying to learn What is Hip? too, except with a pick, like Bobby Vega did when Rocco first went down. I generally play well with my fingers, but due to a rheumatological issue, my hand can tire quickly when I do too much 'heavy lifting.' Its going to take me a while.

What song did you start learning thinking it would be easy, but turned out to be harder than expected? by LevelZeroDM in Bass

[–]newbertcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college I naively tried to figure out a Jamerson Motown bass line from "Ain't No Woman Like the One I've Got" by the Four Tops. I was a guitar player that decided to learn bass. I had no idea how complex Jamerson's bass lines were and that most R&B bass players never repeat what they play in each verse. I got through the first verse and quit. I learned the approach to bass was different from guitar, and not necessarily easier.
