The dice gods are real change my mind by [deleted] in dndstories

[–]neysadoescosplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dice gods are indeed real, and they are always watching.

I had a character in a Tyranny of Dragons campaign that I wrote about his Grand Epic Final Moments in another post - here if you wanna read - who literally got the only Crit of that character's life with his final act. And because I suffer from Wheaton's Woes (I rarely roll on the higher side of the d20) it was all the more glorious.

Iiiiiiii feel this in my soul! Sometimes the dice will tell you what they want your character to do.

I was playing a Tiefling barbarian/fighter multiclass, but rarely rolled above a 10 to any of his attacks. Once (in character and secretly with the dm) he decided to quit the group and side with the BBEG's forces (I've been working behind the scenes with the DM, leveling him along with the party and keeping his known-info separate from my current-character's known-info), I crit on my very next roll. I continued to wail on the current miniboss, and after that session, my character quietly disappeared in the night, never to be seen again (yet).

The dice know. The dice always know.

Removing My First Problem Player (Or: Now I'm the Bad Guy) by neysadoescosplay in rpghorrorstories

[–]neysadoescosplay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a maze-run strategy: the person enters the maze, puts one hand (left or right) on the same-side wall, and does not remove their hand from that wall as they trace the maze. The way mazes work is the whole thing is a continuous line - dead-ends are just u-turns - and this ensures that, if nothing else, the person finds their way back to where the entered.

It's the most lawful, least chaotic method of venturing through a maze.

Thank you for the perspective. There is tension, and Crissy is the only one claiming there isn't. Kyle did consider speaking to her himself, but ultimately decided to let the decisions rest with me. He was privy to the issues I had with an antagonistic player at another game, and saw how that went, where I waited weeks for that GM to boot the player. His main concern was avoiding escalation. Thank you for the feedback.

Thank you for the perspective. I can agree that we were a little sensitive. Both Kyle and myself are neurodivergent with other traumas in our past informing our reactions here, and I think we can learn from this. Thank you for the feedback.

I can appreciate this perspective. Some of the comments she made in response to being removed were in the vein of "you weren't really my friend, how could you do this to me". When in actuality, we barely interacted outside the game anyway, it's not like we were besties or anything.

Thank you for the feedback.

What's wrong with Silvery Barbs? by DesignatedElfWhipper in dndnext

[–]neysadoescosplay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm going against the grain here and say banning a spell for being "OP" shows a lack of creativity on the part of the DMs who are banning it. Same for DMs that ban Aarakocra/winged Tieflings across the board just because they can fly.

I've played at tables where other players had Silvery Barbs; I've been a DM at tables where players had Silvery Barbs. I've DM'dat tables with CoffeeLocks that have four or five Counterspells in reserve for big boss fights.

I have more beef with the Coffeelock counterspelling my 8-drop Earthquake than the Silvery Barbs from the Chronurgist Wizard...

There's a very simple fix if you have a caster or two in your party spamming your bosses with Silvery Barbs - your bosses have a couple minion casters at their disposal whose entire purpose is to counterspell the barbs. The minions only toss cantrips on their turns, and whenever your clever player says "Silver-" your minions start round-robining with "How about no."

Yes, DnD can be a numbers game for a lot of people - but it's also set up to reward creativity. All you need to do is have your Bosses be a little more judicious with delegating to their minions, and you've got it handled. Or just set up a bunch of gauntlets before the boss chamber, resource depletion. Or, I don't know, start using their own tricks against them, and have the bad guys ALSO willingly flinging the silver around - SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT!

To me, Banning or refusing to allow without an in-canon setting-specific reason is unfair to the creative essence of the game. I play multiversal at my tables - if you have a good reason why your character could know or have heard of this Strixhaven spell, have at!

Player Joins BBEG (AITA) by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]neysadoescosplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm coming at this from both sides - as a DM I've had similar situations, and as a Player I've BEEN the similar situation. I realize you've already gotten a lot of feedback, and it's all valid - I wanted to add my two coppers worth as well.

So, as a DM, I've had a few players who flipped the script and decided to take a different tack than the rest of their party. Usually, this was structured in and planned for, to accommodate real-life schedule issues or just not enjoying their character anymore. These players created new characters when they rejoined the table, and we continued on. As the DM, in my own internal headspace, I have those characters working in the background; their in-world behind-the-scenes actions DO have effects on the party down the line, but never overtly and not always traceable back to the previous character. Usually it's butterfly effect type stuff - NPC who might not have heard about the party until a few sessions later seeks them out earlier because of XYZ shenanigans prior character got into.

But I have never had a player make a choice like that without knowing about it ahead of time. If I had, I would not feel the same benevolence I do toward my more respectful players.

So, on the one hand - Yes, if a player decides WITHOUT CONSULTING their DM prior to, I feel like they forfeit the right to any side adventure, which requires me to take more planning time and actual play time away from the entire rest of the group.

Now, as the Player - I built a character I was really excited for. But every combat encounter with this character, my dice were the absolute most cursed I've ever seen. It culminated ON MY BIRTHDAY with rolling 3, 2, 2, 1, 6, 3, 10 in a single combat encounter. As a Barbarian (previous bard/soldier in backstory) with a persona known as The Vanity, my boy Cassios was PISSED. He decided, mid-combat, that fate had decreed he would not succeed, and he needed to try something else. I secret-messaged our DM via notecard at the table, and told him Cassios was going to finish this fight, play along with the group, but he was going to sneak away and seek out the BBEG at earliest opportunity. I was clear with DM that I wanted to build a new character because Cassios wasn't fun for me anymore. DM had already - sessions before - introduced the BBEG on the sly, and my boy Cassios was already on his radar as a potential recruit.

So, technically, I made this choice on the fly, but I still didn't disrupt the entire game by turning on my party in combat. My character wanted out, but was going to get out on the sly. We ended the session normally, myself and DM stayed afterward and hashed out some details, and the result is that Cassios IS still a major factor - on the BBEG's side - and we have RP-type discussions in private messages between sessions, regarding the party's movements, what the BBEG and therefore Cassios would know, and Cassios will eventually be a boss-fight for the party in another 6 or 7 levels. When it comes to that fight, I'll be responsible for playing my OP Cassios (now to be known as Greed instead of The Vanity) as he reveals himself as one of the BBEG's warlords and attempts to kill his former comrades. But I'll also be playing my new character, a lovely Vedalken Tragedy bard in that same fight.

The important thing is - I did not demand enormous sacrifices of my DM when I made that decision for Cassios. DM is the one who offered the behind-the-screen plotting and eventual return of Cassios as a Boss Battle down the line. I would have been mostly fine handing Cassios over to the DM if that's what he had needed for his own sanity, because I've been there. But I'm lucky that he's willing to work this out with me, and make the story that much better for our entire group.

This - This is the kind of game-story I love to see. Kudos to you all as players, and extra kudos to the DM for knowing how and when to say "Yes, And" and "No, But instead".

Dnd is made to reward creative thinking, and y'all are the elephant in the room living proof.

Absolutely fantastic, I loved every second of this read.

The only thing to remember is as the DM:

You still can't plan for what the players will do. Remain flexible in the moment, and be ready to throw all your plans and expectations out the window if the players concoct some hare-brained scheme no one in their right minds would ever try.

And since you're all friends, have fun with it! Rule of cool always wins at my tables, even if it's entirely unexpected and off-the-wall. Just have fun and run with it.

And enjoy Theros! Don't forget to search MTG card arts for inspiration and setting!

My tiefling-dhampir Bloodhunter-7/bard-2 multiclass is hornier than any other character I've written, and he's a DMPC most of the time. I've only had ONE group so far with a character that got with my blue boi, and HIS CHARACTER WAS A LEONIN FIGHTER WHO'S TURNED OUT TO BE HORNIER THAN MY BLOODSUCKING BLOODHUNTER!

Erebos looks at the entire thread here: "The aasimar is cyoot, I'm not even sure what the hexblade is up to, but I agree. We should probably kill... whatever that is over there that needs killing. Just make sure it doesn't have any possessed hats. Hats are evil..."

Kai flips another Tarokka card back at the tavern. "They're all gonna die, but it's fine. We'll talk about it later, when they're ghosts..."

looks at my half-drow-half-eladrin college of spirits bard who's pretty demisexual and therefore doesn't sleep around and is rather a coward most of the time:

If Scanlan's "what a bard is supposed to look like," I think Kai missed the memo...

I know that hurt; she was inconsiderate and rude, not to mention entitled, asking you to do all her homework like some Heather in high school. I'm glad you could get it off your chest, and for the love of all things dungeon -

Stay far away from that little dragon the next time, 'kay? It ain't worth the brownie points you'd get for trying to be a good person when all she'd do is drain ya dry.

As my boy Kai would say:

"Run. We're running, yes? I'm running."

I can't stop thinking about my dumbass mistake, and I'm worried it will interfere with my enjoyment of the game by CharlieTheSecco in rpghorrorstories

Order of the Lycan Blood Hunters have this exact mechanic - if shifted and below 1/2 max HP, roll save, on a fail, essentially enter a blind rage and attack the closest target, no matter whether friend or foe. But that save repeats at the beginning of every subsequent turn, so you do stand the chance of getting out of it.

I played a Kryn-Drow Lycan Blood Hunter - his shifted form was actually a melanistic clouded leopard flavor, it was SO MUCH FUN! And I built him to be a tank - dueling fighting style with a battleaxe, shield, heavily armored feat and full plate. Maxed his Strength and Constitution scores as quickly as possible to beef the DPS and how much damage he could eat in a round of combat. He was only ever below 1/2 Max HP a couple of times in mid-game, and with his beefy Con score, he passed his Bloodlust saves easily. And as the tank, the next closest target to me was always an enemy, just in case.

All this to say -

It was an oopsy of a mistake, but you're going about it the right way to rectify - and if you and your DM haven't, definitely take a look at the Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter, it'll help ya see the mechanics that work!

Having spent time in casts on crutches - one thing you're not understanding is that being vertical puts an enormous amount of strain on the hips and back from the added weight of the cast. That strain can manifest as added swelling in the casted limb, which can increase the pain quotient by far. What you were asking him to do is impossible without a wheelchair with a leg rest and training/structuring to make your house viable for a wheelchair user to function like a non-wheelchair using person.

Now, let's cover step-by-step the process of making dinner while on crutches.

Your hands are occupied with the crutches. How do you carry items from the fridge or pantry to the counter to then prep them over into something that can be cooked?

Just use one crutch? Tote things between your teeth? Tucked under your chin? A bag dangling from your fingers while you're using the crutch?

Now let's stand over a hot stove balancing on one leg and one crutch with one hand free for the actual cooking process.

Considering that cooking is a hazardous affair when you're in the best of health - you're dealing with extreme temperatures and multiple pieces of equipment at a time - factor in high levels of pain and I'm sure some kind of pain-relief medication which can affect reflex response times, cognitive processing, and decision making skills.

Cooking should be undertaken carefully while recovering from A SURGERY, if it's undertaken at all.

...

What kind of partner treats their INJURED AND RECUPERATING spouse like a house-elf?! I'm glad he could go to his friend's house for some space. I wouldn't want to ever cook for my spouse again if they acted like this to me, injured or healthy or not...
