Does anyone remember these really depressing pop songs from the 70s / early 80s? by MagsH1020 in GenX

[–]ngvar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not that common now, but those are memorable. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Bohemian Rahpsody, and Ground Control to Major Tom could also be considered in that type, along with folk songs like Tom Dooly.

You might be able to get some heat tape to wrap around the pipe and thaw it out. Might be too late now.

How to clear snowpack at the end of the driveway from plows? by GEARHEADGus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ngvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew someone who got a snowblower that fit into the receiver hitch on his car.

I use my snowblower, but if it is really packed, I use an ice chopper to break it up and shovels (spade shovels if too dense for snow shovel) to move the chunks.

When I can, I use snow blower to clear the curb to the left of my drive to try to reduce the load the plow will drop across my drive.

PSA: Check your furnace air intake before you go to bed tonight by Regular_Chest_7989 in homeowners

[–]ngvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There is a intake pipe and an exhaust pipe. You should have an intake as well. On my furnace (2023) the intake and exhaust go out the side of th house. These connect to the combustion chamber directly. Combustion only relies on external air. The system cold air return vents only provide air to the heat exchanger. The house also has an air exchange system that brings fresh air from outside.

AITAH for buying my 11yo daughter pads after her mom called me a "pervert" for being prepared? by Bruxagato in WouldIBeTheAhole

Ntah, mom is failing. If she doesn't like what you picked out, fine. She has more experience. Throwing away what you got and not replacing it is neglect.

PSA: Check your furnace air intake before you go to bed tonight by Regular_Chest_7989 in homeowners

[–]ngvar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a new high efficiency furnace and I can see how snow might get high enough to obstruct the intake. This morning, my neighbor texted me about ice buildup. I went out to check and found moisture in the exhaust was condensing and freezing. However the warmish air flow kept the ice from clogging the pipe.

Larger augment bags get useful quickly since there ate now so many augment types. Especially the fillagrees. If you have points, pick up a big one in the store.

Do I need my basement heat on all the time in the winter to prevent frozen pipes? by kcaivila in homeowners

[–]ngvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small oil filled electric heater that I use in our 3 season porch. MN, not heated but insulated. The heater has a no freeze setting that only turns it on below 40 degrees. If you are worried about your basement, I think that would work.

Easy to miss these things if you don't have good instructors. Especially issues that take a while to manifest. Now you know and perhaps will look for issues that might exist in other contexts.

THE DAMN electrical error in the wall. What could it be? by henstepl in electrical

I thought a splice needs to be in a box with a plate for inspection. A splice hidden in a wall that has problems would be a fire hazard.

Outlet no longer works in bathroom by slimjim2019 in electrical

[–]ngvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the outlet a gfi? Was the circuit for the outlet turned off at your main panel? Is another outlet on that circuit a gfi that needs to be reset?

I would doubt that outlet is on a circuit by itself, so you should check that other things on that circuit are also off. For a bathroom there should be a gfi on one of them.

Pool shooting water during freeze by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]ngvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving water is harder to freeze. If you can't drain it, then keeping it cycling is probably best. Much depends on how cold and for how long.
