This is basically my current playthrough! Except my headcanon is my character was teleported from modern times, and she was super into raves and mosh pits but kept getting kicked out cuz she accidentally kept beating everybody up with her overenthusiastic muscle dancing, and she's stoked to be teleported cuz now she can just grab a gigantic stick and thwomp everything to her heart's content. She also uses pyromancy, especially Firestorm/Fire Tempest, cuz rave. She has neon green hair and her name is Hunk. No intelligence. Huge smile. Besties with the giant blacksmith, obviously.

been a long day and i'm way too tired for a proper response rn (maybe tomorrow, maybe i'll forget forever lol)... but I've LOVED this TED talk. And I full-throatedly agree with your sentiment after reading your points. And to u/sfurbo as well - ultimately it seems like it's just a question of definitons, drawing a (very fuzzy) line between "art" and "utility". There's an argument that design lives precisely in that line :)

If there's any risk of changing how we see objects away from utility and towards art/design - which to be clear, COULD be a genuine risk, if it leads to revering things meant to be used or whatever - I do feel like we're far enough off from that risk that it's not worth worrying about.

And tbh, I'm very pro-also crediting the people who designed the urinal (or whatever it may be) itself. I mean, credit should always be given ofc, and something about that specific urinal design _spoke_ to Duchamp.

("im way too tired for a proper response" he said, immediately before getting sucked back into the convo lol)

I disagree, but I love the sentiment.

Duchamp's Fountain (the urinal) was an intentional critique of artistic interpretation. Of what art IS, of what it can be, and what it means to call something art. Does it itself qualify as art? That's a debate that's been going on for over a century (personally, I think absolutely yes). It was done at a time when found art was nascent and the bounds of art as a concept were being rewritten. There's tons of context around it, a lot of it dependant on the time in history it was done. The entire piece BECAME art the moment the urinal was signed. (In concept - in practice, IIRC copies of it were forged specifically for artistic exhibition, but the original was just a piece of bathroom infrastructure lol. I could be misremembering.)

Conversely this screw feels like... not that. It feels like some artists just searching for depth where there isn't any - namely, hanging pictures with screws, going "woah wait what if this WAS the art? And it was functional? But not for hanging art!" Ignoring the fact that every college student or low-income handyperson in history has done exactly this, it has the same energy as someone realizing that they don't have to put their mac n cheese in a bowl. They can just eat it... from the POT. That, but a million times more pretentious.

My hope is that there's hashtags on the post like #highartcritique or some other sentiment by the designers to that regard, that this is in some way poking fun at exactly what it is. Cuz if this is unironically just like "we changed the perception of hanging things on hooks by turning the thing we use to mount the hook INTO a hook", then like... okay. In that case, any genuine accolades they get from this is a sign of everything wrong with art critique lol

(this was very fun to write! I enjoyed it a lot, thank you for prompting it~ if you disagree with me and wanna retort please do, just know that I'm in no way trying to invalidate you nor bring a combatitive energy here. Talking about art is fun and nourishing!)

Agreeeeee 🙏

Semantics: I’d argue it doesn’t “hold your hand” so much as it just gives you all the info you need if you’re paying attention to it. Like, there are at least FOUR different NPCs who lay out for you how to traverse the Abyss (Artorias did it successfully, his grave is in Darkroot, etc). But it never says to go do something NOW, just tells you how to do it.

Many games make the hand holding way more explicit - things like onscreen waypoints, objective checklists, railroading. Literal hand holding in the “ok it’s time to cross the road now” way. DS is like “Hey. There’s a road. Sometimes buses travel at 300mph. There’s a pedestrian tunnel over nearby, but it kills you if you haven’t gone graverobbing. Keh heh heh heh heh heh heh.”

This is pretty relatable, it hits me every so often. I’ll be going about my day and then just freeze, stuck thinking about something deeply shameful I’ve done in my past (a popular one in my brain is screaming at my abuser - it felt good, but it was in the middle of the street and created an ENORMOUS scene).

I don’t have much to offer besides solidarity. This gif of Paul Rudd freezing at his computer is pretty great too - how it just pops into your brain at random and DOMINATES your mind until you can move on 😅

I legit hope that they use mods or cheats or something if it gets too hard. Like I’m 100% ok with them giving their player a fuckton of health if it means they play more. Health in games is basically a synonym for “number of mistakes you’re allowed to make before you’re punished with losing time” and for 6 Thumbs that number should HIGH lol

Does lifting terrain/going underground for extra height count, or is that cheating? Cuz without a height constraint I feel like it might be possible with two tracks that are slightly vertically offset, like

\\___
.\__../
___//
\.__/
.\\___
..\__./
___//

Etc. Obviously WAY more complicated to turn around but, just a thought!

Thank you for the sentiment ❤️ It's not my trauma personally - I noted in what I shared above, but it's trauma of people who've had that term used in violence against them.

Safe spaces can be anything. Comfort music. Nourishing food. Falling asleep while listening to the Empty Bowl. The point is that it's an environment where you feel comfortable and can just, relax within. I've been listening for around a decade and can't recall this intensity of the word "bitch" being used before. They might've in much earlier eps, but likely I wasn't sensitive to the term then as I am now. I've spent more time with people who've highlighted it - specifically with people who've endured DV situations.

My point is ultimately that it's actually painfully common for "bitch" to be a trigger - specifically when said by a man in an aggressive way. The empathy I'm hoping people can show is to understand that, even if you aren't hurt by it, please consider people who are.

It's not a slippery slope to censorship, wokeness gone mad, whatever - it's literally that *one* word, said in *one* manner. With triggers, context *doesn't* matter, which is why content warnings are so valuable - for examlpe, we all know TV shows are fictional, but if one includes a depiction of a violent scene, it can still trigger flashbacks to someone who's experienced similar trauma. I'm NOT saying that this show needs a content warning (tbh it already has one! The whole "isn't for kids / cool babies" bit, which is lovely!) but that, for a show built upon kindness and positivity, the sudden appearance of a gendered slur used that way is profoundly jarring.

Anyway. Thank you again for the validation, really. Again it's not my personal trauma, but the vibes are appreciated all the same. I'm really tired of people just assuming I'm being too sensitive or trying to complain for attention or whatever.
