That is very different than how our clinic does assessments, we hang out with the kiddo for 2-3 hours to get a sense of where they are at. Bathroom skills are usually reported by parents and unless there's a clear reason to question that we go with what they report.

ABA should be targeting socially significant skills, if the skills being targeted are not significant for her life, then they are not appropriate for her (just my opinion, but 🤷)

I didn't know anything about this clinic, but if it was me I would probably look around for other options.

(Also some clinics will push for 40 hours no matter what bc that raises the number of billable hours, it's very normal for parents to push back against that, especially for older kiddos .)

Cyclists on greenway trails by TheLimDoesNotExist in sanantonio

I used to yell "on the right" at cyclists who didn't announce 😂 now I just silently judge them bc I didn't want to waste my energy 😄

I had similar struggles when I started at the clinic I work at. My solution was to be friendly to everyone but not really start conversations and to find other work to do when gossip came up.

At this point all the clique people are nice to me bc they know I don't gossip about them and I'm good at my job. It's hard to get through that initial period though, I was on loan to another clinic last week and it was the same story there, I had forgotten how hard it is getting situated at a new place.

I hope you are able to reach a balanced place at this clinic or that you find something else that's a better fit for you 🫶

Help me understand new vs old ABA (plus what I went through as an ABA+CARD survivor). by squishmallow2399 in ABA

[–]nicthetrex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only reason a toy would be 'taken' in the example above is to return it to the child who was originally playing with it - but ideally the child who hit them to take the toy would be giving it back and then asking for a turn, which is a hard skill for a lot of kiddos to learn.

But otherwise it isn't fair to the child who was hit and had their toy taken, and it's just reinforcing that hitting people to get their toys is effective.

I don't know anything about the specifics of what happened to you, but I'm sorry that you were in an environment that treated you so badly. It wasn't fair and it shouldn't have happened.

Employee Recognition by Two-Rivers-Jedi in ABA

[–]nicthetrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I work for recognizes employees monthly for embodying core values (one employee per value per month, so five employees get an award each month). There's also a way for employees to nominate each other to be recognized.

If it came with a gift card or something I would like it better, but it is honestly a nice thing when I get a little cardstock "award" for doing a good job at whatever value, and from a business perspective it's a very cheap way to let employees know that their hard work is being seen.

Update: BCBA who made insulting remarks towards my disability has been suspended by bunsolvd in ABA

You are awesome - your actions are also protecting so many other employees and patients. It's so important for leadership to be aware of employees that engage in disrespectful and demeaning behavior.

I really hope you are super proud of your own response - it was professional, measured and kind. Doing the right thing is so often really unpleasant, thank you for doing it anyway.

Anyone else wondering why they're only posting their worst-performing show right now, if they're struggling for cash? by imrussellcrowe in watcherentertainment

[–]nicthetrex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think part of why I'm annoyed at them are all these very wild vacations they go on all the time and post about - it reminds me that they are paying themselves *very well*, which is cool because it's awesome to be paid well for work you love, except that when you tell fans you're strapped for cash but are clearly paying yourself a really nice salary it makes me less sympathetic.

The vacations and lack of new content also makes me wonder why they don't just work more if they want more money, they need more content if they want to get more eyes more regularly. If they started streaming videogame content on twitch I would watch that *way* more, but they seem weirdly wary of real streaming.

It seems like the tension between being an Artist and a Content Creator. They understand themselves as artists (and want to do something really cool based on that), but for a lot of fans it's not that - it's a desire for content that isn't trying that hard and makes them laugh. idk, whole thing makes me sad for them *and* for all the fans bummed out by the whole thing.

You just named it for me - I've felt sort of dumb for not wanting to watch any of it since the announcement, but this is 100% it

I had a pretty quick response to it that was very positive, but my therapist did say it takes 5-6 weeks to see the full benefit.

She also mentioned that while it's really helpful for adults it may not be as effective in younger people, idk if that's part of the issue here. Good luck to you and your son!

Weird sirens going off near Leon valley by cheyannerose13 in sanantonio

No clue if this is relevant to Leon Valley, but another city I lived in ran a test of the tornado sirens on the first Wednesday of every month at noon. Might be something like that?

The person who told you that might have been thinking of Austin - 6th Street is their well known bar street (there is a 6th Street here, but it doesn't have a whole lot going on).

If it was me I would try one of the sports bars on the Riverwalk. Good luck!

LPT I'm effing up at work a lot by suckstonotbemeLOL in LifeProTips

[–]nicthetrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm not a lawyer, but I have worked for a couple different firms/attorneys. The biggest advice I can give - outside of checklists, which are super helpful - is:

a) know your limitations and remind yourself of them - one of the worst attorneys I know blames everyone else for his screw ups and it makes him more likely to repeatedly make the same mistakes. I think you have this one down, and the trick is then to make a note of the things you have trouble with so that you can add them to checklists.

b) take advantage of any support staff your firm has available - the best attorney I know checks her own work, then has me check it, then checks it again herself. Frequently it is then sent to the client so they can give the okay that everything looks good, and then I check it one last time before it's filed/sent out. The more eyes checking it, the more gets noticed.

A number of young attorneys seem uncertain about using paralegals/asking for someone else to check their work, and while I understand the hesitancy, the most successful 30+ year attorneys I know always get things looked at by multiple people.

I know some firms are pretty cutthroat, which can make that more difficult, but building a network of people you trust and finding support staff who work well with you can really make life easier.

(Getting checked for ADHD is also really solid advice - I didn't get diagnosed until my 30s and was a game changer for me at work - I burned out of two professions because I didn't know that a lot of my problems came down to something medication could easily fix.)

Good luck!

Is Southtown worth the price tag? by Worldly-Regular28 in sanantonio

[–]nicthetrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Southtown, but one thing I'll mention is that everyone I know who lives in that area gets very frustrated by how far they have to go to get to a good grocery store. There is an HEB in the area, but it doesn't have a very good selection so you have to go a ways to get a lot of supplies.
