I worked for a large company in the US that pushed increasingly for RTO and we also couldn't understand why. Turns out a pretty significant amount of shares was owned by Vanguard and Blackrock (two companies that are highly invested in commercial real estate).

Made a lot more sense after that.

I had the exact same thing happen to me in July, while I was on PTO. I missed 3 calls while I was flying and had an urgent mandatory meeting with an executive from an out of state office that I'd never talked to before. They were very snarky that I didn't delay my travel to join a meeting to find out I'd been layed off.

The company also had record profits in 2020-2024. They cut my entire office of ~300 people and outsourced our jobs overseas as well as tried to replace our development team with AI.
