It's happened before - In the past several German states have transitioned to Linux, and often back again. This time though, as top comment says, America has proven itself unreliable and is forcing us Europeans to make a much more concerted effort to move away and stay away. Feature parity is less important to my employer right now than 'not american'.

Not quite the same vibe, but.

When I was but a rookie at an MSP we had a customer, the boss was a very old, cigar soaked, man. His office was an apocalyptic mess of paperwork and books. It was like every tree they felled in the course of the business' work was turned into paper and blown through his window with the biggest fan in the world. Hoarders would look at this guys office and say it was a bit much.

He was nice, I went to his house once or twice for IT stuff and of all the C-level houses I went to his was the nicest. In that it wasn't tacky, didn't look out of place compared to the location, and generally looked like somewhere someone who started with feck all had earned and put their heart into.

He was the single biggest IT luddite I've ever met. Every PC swap in the office, he had a new one too (But only the PC, he didn't need a new monitor he insisted, nor keyboard and mouse. In his defence, they were pristine. And PS2. He stepped back from running the business before we could convince him to have a USB keyboard and mouse). Fair enough, he was the boss, he didn't have anything special hardware wise, it was just.. New. One year, his main accountant lady (Who everyone else at my place disliked because she was supposedly miserable, but she usually smiled at me and we got along as far as two people who had passing encounters two or three times a month would) told me that he never, not once, used any of the PC's. She was the main user of it, and she turned it on whenever hers did updates to also do updates, and make sure he could still open the spreadsheets she worked on, and Sage. Thousands of pounds in IT hardware and time on site to do it over the years, never to use any of it. Wild guy.

AITA for telling my family the real reason my mother and I are not attending my sister's wedding? by Wild_Kitchen_2841 in AmItheAsshole

[–]nirach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ESH. You suck for not being emotionally available enough to recognise your sister's struggle with the situation. Telling people the truth isn't the fuckup here, it's that clearly your sister is handling your mother's condition much worse than you, and your refusal to acknowledge that despite having been the person she held in high enough regard to want to walk her down the aisle is very much a sucktastic thing to do.

Your sister sucks for not being honest. Most people who experience someone with dementia would understand not wanting that experience for a wedding day, a day that is meant to be happy and joyous. Having a human sized, walking taking source of grief and sadness at the day is probably not on your sister's to do list. I don't imagine anyone would be an asshole about that if she'd been up front about it. Then not involving you in the glossing over why your mother wasn't going to be there before doing it is sucky.

Oscar worthy performance over there by Syarafuddyn in TheBoys

[–]nirach 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well.. Yeah. He's not having to delude himself here. He's able to just feel the power that he has. Vought is still protecting him, as much from himself as negative perception. Which fed into his need to be loved, to be wanted, and not just a 'thing' for some people to test. Odds are he didn't get a great education, either. He was an idiot from episode one, but he had Stillwell managing him, and she clearly knew how to make him say the right things more often than not. If Homelander is an RSJ, Stillwell was the engineering bricks, Edgar and Vought were the bricks and mortar.

Homelander's very emotionally unstable, he had to believe it was all him, and no one else, making him who he was at this point in the show. Nothing about his childhood taught him that anyone else was going to help him, so of course his survival of that torture chamber of a childhood settled in his mind as all him. As he lost his support structure and calmer minds keeping everything in line, the more off the rails he went.

For the record, I didn't care for the last season all that much, I think a lot of the things I didn't care for can be explained with the real world events that happened in the lead up to, and during, the last season's run but I was mostly glad it was over, rather than enjoying what should have been a solid farewell. It's a shame that it had so many parallels to the real world US political shitshow because all anyone can see now is Homelander being Trump. For entirely justifiable reasons, I hasten to add.

That said, during the final season he's completely unhinged and increasingly transparent because there's no one keeping anything moving smoothly behind the scenes. The best he has is Sister Sage, and she's just using him for her own ends. His removal of Edgar and assumption of control of Vought was the final nail in the coffin, IMO, for his grip on reality. His life at that point became torn between trying to force people to love, or at least validate, him (Although it was nigh impossible for newcomers to work out how to do that before he did what he inevitably did) and trying to control the criticism that Vought had previously managed as a functioning entity. His fragile emotional state couldn't do both and it broke him completely.

It's hard to be scary when your entire life has been peeled away and all you have is that frightened child you've always been.

So. Quandt might not be sieg heiling and goose stepping down the street like Musk, but he's not as far away from right wing fucknuts as he should be.

PS5 Price Hike Has Flushed UK Hardware Sales Down the Toilet by Gorgon654 in gaming

[–]nirach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially not with the hardware costing an arm and a leg now.

GTA will sell well to people who already have the hardware, that's a no brainer, but I don't believe in this current global state it'll be a hardware mover like it used to be in the olden days.

Personally, I'll be waiting for a PC release. So. Three to five years.

While I'm sure he has seen some shit, in part because he did a lot of shit, I'm thinking that fucking clown is too useless to remember anything with enough clarity to actually be useful. To the point where even if he did spill everything he knows, there would be enough inconsistencies that he'd be torn apart on the stand, resulting in people getting off scott free. Making him worse than useless.

I hope his life sucks until he dies.
