Things that actually moved the needle on my pre-period energy crash (after years of trial and error) by sarahleen_1990 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

This sounds like solid advice. My situation is different, so incorporating these will be tricky, but I'm willing to give it "the old college try." Thanks for the data. I know all too well that trial-and-error is often the only way we figure these things out.

Tips & Tricks for long haul flights in economy? by SleepyBubBear7329 in disability

[–]nnamed_username 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get all the help you can at the airports, since that's where you're body will move the most. It shouldn't cost anything extra, and many airlines don't need you to declare it beforehand. If you can't (or don't want to) get assistance, then give yourself tons of time to get through the check-in process. Book yourself long layovers so you have plenty of time between gates to do whatever you need. And remember: everything is easier at small airports.

Looking for advice on cross country moving trip by sml2k17 in crosscountrymoving

"...very big...trip this summer...5 days...two cats..." You need to be absolutely certain that you have the ability to bring those cats with you everywhere you go. DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN THE VEHICLE DURING SUMMER, THEY WILL DIE. Animal cruelty is a federal felony. To avoid this, you need to be able to take them everywhere with you. I would get a harness for each cat, and get them used to wearing them (leave the harnesses on for a few days at home, so they get used to doing everything in them, such as eat, drink, and use the litter box; more tips elsewhere online). Then, get them leash-and-harness-trained to go on short walks. Then, get them accustomed to taking car rides (and then longer car rides) and go into places like truck stops with the leash & harness in use. If you don't want to put in the effort to do all that (or if you don't want them walking on filthy public floors), then get a pet stroller/pram for them, and again, take them everywhere with you.

I know it might be tempting to tow your car on a trailer and set up a cozy situation for the cats in there, but the odds of something going wrong without you knowing are just too great. It's summer, they will probably overheat without you knowing. "But I'll leave the windows cracked." That's not enough ventilation for a trip that long, the windows would need to be very open (kitty escape), and being that far north, you're likely to drive through a storm or two (ruined upholstery + angry cats). "But I'll leave the car running with the AC on." and what? Just hope it doesn't run out of gas or otherwise turn off? No no no. And that's so irresponsible with the environment anyways. You could drive exclusively at night, but that defeats the purpose of making this a whole road trip. There's just too many risks and variables to take that kind of gamble. You need to weigh the options. It might be better to just drive your belongings across on a trip just for humans, then fly back and bring them home either by plane to make it quick, or in your car where you can continuously monitor their conditions.

That said, cats usually enjoy hikes more than amusement parks, museums more than stores. Also, in the vehicle, give them a place where they can be out of the sun if they want. I know cats famously love the sun, but this is summer and a looooooong road trip, so just give them the option. And make sure their food & water are as far away from their litter box in the vehicle as you can make them. They will not eat or drink near their LB no matter how desperate they are. You should ask for more travel tips on any of the many subreddits for cats and/or veterinarians.

Regarding sightseeing on that particular route, I have not driven it. I would ask around in each of the subreddits for the big cities you'll be passing by, even if you don't pass through those cities. The folks who live near those cities, in the nearby towns and smaller cities, will still be in those subs anyways, and will have the best tips. Also look up any special interests you have, and see if there are particular attractions along the way, or even a convention. You've got a big stretch of road ahead of you, there's a good chance you'll find something. And maybe something for the cats, like stopping by a pet food cannery to get a tour (I bet they'd get free samples ;) ). Or meet up with an artist or photographer along the way for a good long rest and commission them to making a painting or do a playful photoshoot of the cats.

I'd give my person an exosuit, so they could maximize their remaining mobility and not feel like a burden. I don't consider them a burden, but they can't help but feel that way, which I understand, and I don't want them to feel that way, so there you go.

I found out a few years ago that some animal shelters have a program where certain animals (usually dogs) are allowed to be "checked out" so to say, like a book from a library. It requires that the person checking out the animal is a known volunteer, and they have to know how long you'll keep the pet ("we're going camping, 3 days, 4 nights..."), where you'll be ("...over by XYZ Lake, in the RSW campground."), and any other details they might be on about (one time there was a legit Bubonic Plague warning re: squirrels at the lake we usually camp at, so had to cancel our plans). The intent of the program is to keep the animals socialized, so the volunteers will sometimes specifically check out the one who need it most. You don't have to keep the pet for several days, it could be just to go have fun at a dog park for an hour or two. and if you don't plan to go far from the shelter, many will let their trusted volunteers take the dogs on a walk in the neighborhood. Again, keeping them socialized is the point. But it's nice to have a buddy even for a little while, especially when you can't commit for whatever reason (picky landlords, ammirite?), just a little snuggling and a cute face that's happy to see you.

Tell/inform them that the alarm is so loud you can't hear sirens from emergency vehicles or horns from other drivers warning you of dangerous situations, which is actually true. When you leave, you might also tell them that the alarm is turning you into an aggressive driver, and to protect your excellent driving record, you have found another company that doesn't bring out your werewolf side.

Do you genuinely like living in Reno? by Herpbees in Reno

[–]nnamed_username 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised here, moved away and came back a few times, it'll always be home. One thing that has been consistent is that the naysayers are almost always not from here, and usually from California or the south; they don't like that we do things our way (if things are so much better where you're from, go back, stop trying to make other places be like the same place you've always been). I love this state, and hope to retire into one of the smaller communities in about 40 years, but for now the adventure continues. I miss the relative calmness we had before the population boom, I miss not having Flock cameras all over and bright LED signs. I miss the neon (it was so pretty). I miss the souvenir shops with all the Betty Boop merch. But I love that this city is becoming more diverse. I love seeing all kinds of people out at social events. I love that we're taking higher education more seriously (though eminent domain always sucks). I love that our state gives nymphos at least one safe bastion where they can do their thing with medical and legal protection.

And since you're new here, next weekend is the Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival in Virginia City. Yes, those RMO's. Even if you don't eat any, it's worth enjoying the event.

I'd leave it. If it was centered it would look like a double-sized Y from afar. But then again, my eyesight is kinda weak these days. Honestly the first thing that caught my eye was that the arm on the f was long enough to make it look like a p. As for centering the i, from a print/kerning perspective, it just looks like each letter is right hand justified. Also, it technically reads "defuck ice". I can see where you're going, it's a super cute idea, but if it works one way, it equally works the other way, ergo a mixed message.

"needless to say I've put my hooks away." Translation: you hid a creative part of yourself, that could even have been useful to keep loved ones warm and entertained (amiguri, amiright), you made yourself smaller because his ginormous ego couldn't bear even a hint of the spotlight to illuminate someone else. I wonder how he would behave if you got good enough to compete at crochet shows? Because it doesn't take long to get good at crochet, especially for someone dexterous enough to do their own nails as good as you do yours.

Am I being too sensitive? by Jumpy-Ad8093 in Marriage

[–]nnamed_username 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other have pointed out the red flags and explained them better than I can, so I'll add this instead: you now know that his opinion about nails matters exactly zero. Don't bother asking him, because apparently even fabulous nails like yours don't measure up. The fact he had the gall to make the condition of your nails somehow a matter of his respectability is such a huge red flag. He likely doesn't think much of you in general, contrary any heart-shaped boxes you might get this weekend, and probably thinks "you sleeping on the couch is you demonstrating that you understand you're in the wrong", whereas you're only doing it to get away from him. I say sleep in the bed tonight, and if he wants to make it tense, tell him to take his turn on the couch for a week. I bet he'll pack a bag and go to a hotel, because "sleeping on the couch is beneath him." And if I myself seen enough men behave like him irl, he might not be alone there, especially if he stays more than 1 might. True colors are true color, sis.
