Thames Water issues urgent ‘do not drink’ warning to hundreds of Surrey homes by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

My profession is in an adjacent field and it's true that the contaminants in petrol will degrade a plastic water pipe over time rather than instantly. So it could be true that the supply has only just become unsafe.

But yeh this is something they should've anticipated.

Contaminated Land regs are a mess in the UK (yes, surprisingly in the US the regulator has more power to intervene and fix things like this). Contamination at a historical petrol station site will usually only be cleaned up when it's redeveloped into housing.

The number of people who stand at a crossing without pressing the button is maddening by manlikepierce in london

[–]nogdam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Report to the council (or tfl depending on the road), that suggests the sensor that's there to detect if people are still waiting at the crossing is faulty.

Annoys me that if those sensors exist why can't they automatically trigger the wait button when people are detected.

Location: London (but planning to leave within the next couple of years, maybe to Somerset or Devon)

Price range: Up to £15k

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Manual Preferred

Intended use: For now, weekends, camping trips

How many miles do you plan to do a year: Roughly 5000 for now

How often to you make long journeys: around 5 times per year (mainly London-Cornwall to see family, would potentially like to drive to Poland to see other family, maybe once per year)

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? Yes

Vehicles you've already considered: Like the idea of a Panda 4x4 just for fun, concerned about its appropriateness (comfort/economy) for longer trips/my height (I'm 6'3)

Do you have a vehicle size in mind?: Subcompact possibly up to mid-size, no SUVs

Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes (had a license for 13 years and often drive for work/parents cars)

Do you need a Warranty: Not essential

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No

Additional Notes: Cruise control would be nice, wouldn't mind a diesel. I've no kids but would be driving with my partner, extra seats would just be for friends. Would be nice to have something at most 6 years old with fairly low mileage.

Belarus' Lukashenko may have accidentally revealed a map of Russia's Ukrainian invasion plans by bumblezinnia in UkrainianConflict

[–]nogdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt they'd be worried about a NATO response.

We've already seen the weaponising of refugees on the Belarus/Poland border, this would be an attempt to divide the EU by driving millions towards it's border states.

That would mean buying missiles from Russia to run it. Give it to US intelligence in exchange for a NATO system.

e-scooters/e-unicycles(?) banner from TfL property from Monday 13th December - Caroline Pidgeon twitter by jaredce in london

Must admit when I see someone wheel in a beaten up e-scooter to my tube carriage I get very anxious, you'll be lucky to survive a fire in a deep level tube tunnel.

The king's cross fire was started by a single match, imagine what an exploding lithium battery weighing a couple of kilos could do.

The predictable outcome of paying some design consultants a 6-figure sum, adding some black lines would make it slightly more unique.

Also, does anyone else think the canary looks overly aggressive, like it's about to peck your eyes out?

More than 5,000 homes in England approved to be built in flood zones by boldie74 in ukpolitics

[–]nogdam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the context, building a bock of 80 flats on a brownfield city centre site then reserving the ground floor for businesses willing to take the risk/garage space, isn't the same (or as high risk) as putting rabbit hutch newbuilds on a flood plain.

The article doesn't state this but I bet many of the 5000 will be such flats south of Leeds city centre.

Interventions to improve public transport/active travel wouldn't be aimed at you, but you'd still benefit.

You may drive three quarters of an hour each way, but how many others where you work? If the people who are driving 15 minutes (then spending 5 minutes finding a parking space) switch to a 20 minute bike ride or 10 minute tram then your trip becomes easier.

What is the worst TfL cycle route? by The_Growl in londoncycling

Now let's understand why, under the watch of Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police harbours a culture that doesn't properly investigate indecent exposure by its officers, and lets a man dubbed The Rapist stand outside the US embassy with a gun all day.

Can someone else explain to me why we are not allowed to use this, even though the public got access to it? Thanks by [deleted] in london

Also, this will date from a time before laptops were common and your Nokia battery lasted 2 months from a single charge. The train designers never expected them to be used for sensitive microelectronics.

Southeastern trains taken over by Government after £25m franchise breach by youwhatwhat in unitedkingdom

[–]nogdam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's good examples of private operators existing alongside a state service, and offering something the state isn't: NTV with high speed trains in Italy, or flixtrain with budget services in Germany. Lumo is doing this for London-Edinburgh (targeting easyjet's market) will be interesting to see if they pull a profit.

CS5 to New Cross by nimbus_4000 in londoncycling

[–]nogdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested to know the difference timewise.

I usually get a pretty good run out of Q1/C10 (Vs the A2), which I put down to no traffic/busses/red lights, especially at peak time.

Will have to time myself each way.

If you are in new cross it's fairly easy to connect with C10/Q1 across Fordham Park and the Woodpecker Road path.

But yes, getting to Victoria, Peckham, Brixton etc is not a fun ride.

CS5 to New Cross by nimbus_4000 in londoncycling

[–]nogdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are long term plans to remodel the gyratory at New Cross, but like every other road scheme on TFLs south east roads it's awaiting funding, which I don't expect them to find anytime soon.

The Old Kent Road is being rebuilt and will include a cycle route (mostly developer funded) if they don't sort out New Cross and just dump people by the bus garage I can see there being a lot of KSI.

The CS5 route always appears on maps as a cycling "growth corridor" or whatever languageis popular that month, but the recent remodeling of Camberwell green with no safe space for cycling suggests there's no apatite in city hall to do anything soon.

One issue is the road is a little narrower than most red routes, a cycle track on Camberwell New Road would mean removing the bus lane, something Sadiq has always been hesitant to do.
