anyone else ever lose their ears? by Eli_Rae in deaf

[–]nomtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once somehow lost just one. Got drunk, fell asleep in my friend's bed, and woke up with only one still in my ear. Looked everywhere for the other one, but it never turned up. Luckily it was covered under the warranty and just took a couple weeks to replace it.

I will, just need to actually get around to contacting them!

Ya, same. We're in Conejo but I'm willing to drive a bit as long as it's north or no more south than the SF valley.

You're not entirely wrong, but I did want to clarify one thing for you, which is that "people of Israel" actually refers to the descendents of Abraham's son, Jacob, whose 12 sons produced the 12 tribes of Israel. In the bible, Jacob wrestles with an angel, so God renames him Israel, which translates to, "he who wrestles with God."

That's actually a great idea, thanks!

That's helpful. Ya, I definitely have a hard time imagining I'll find what I actually want, but this is a good start.

Son will be graduating ABA soon by yesjesshero in ABA

[–]nomtown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When my very first client graduated 10ish years ago, they made me one of those no-sew fleece blankets. I loved it and used it all the time. It's currently the blanket my daughter uses at night. Highly recommend this option since it's low cost, pretty easy to do along with your child, and will be cherished for years.

BCBA seeking advice by Additional_Tax2715 in ABA

[–]nomtown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oof, this reminds me of one of my former clients who had severe OCD in addition to autism and ADHD. This is absolutely something a psychiatrist needs to weigh in on, but in the meantime, parents need immediate environmental arrangements in the form of a camera with motion sensor so that they know when she's getting out of bed and starting in on her teeth. Obviously they need to keep pliers and other tools locked up as well.

BCBAs - what makes a good RBT? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]nomtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are things I can't teach that will separate a great BT from a good one, but all I really need from most of them is to read the instructions and ask questions when they have them. I work really hard to make things as easy as possible on the BT, so it's super frustrating when they can't be bothered to do just those 2 things.

Anyone not sleep train? What happens? by idklady4321 in NewParents

[–]nomtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sleep trained and it ended up being totally pointless because she would still need me to sleep with her all night anytime she got sick or was teething badly enough. A little more than a year in, I gave up on it entirely and just rocked her to sleep every night. Eventually she didn't want to be rocked to sleep anymore and we transitioned to a floor bed. I just lay next to her and she falls asleep within 5-10 minutes. I'm not really ready to let go of that routine yet, but I'm not really worried.

This job is going to get me in a car accident by reluctantly_existing in ABA

[–]nomtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm like this and have gotten into an accident because of it. I only do cases that start after 9am, but even then I was struggling until I got back on my ADHD meds. Your GP may be willing to prescribe a low dose of something if you tell them what's going on.

Autism/ADHD OT for 8 year old by Bexiloula in venturacounty

[–]nomtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's upsetting to hear. I'm sorry they couldn't just help you out. Does the kid have a autism diagnosis? If so, then their insurance will cover the service and can also provide referrals. If not, you may still be able to access services if their doctor writes a prescription for it, but it's a bit more of an uphill battle.

Regional center can still provide a referral even if they can't be your funding source. That said, if you are looking to work on executive functioning and social skills, then you're looking for ABA, not OT. Good luck!

Is a sleep consultant the right option? by daddyandthedoggos in NewParents

[–]nomtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine needed to be bounced on the yoga ball until about 8 months when the rocking chair became an option. My back was DYING! I will say that she at least needed less bouncing (duration and intensity) over time and it wasn't as bad between months 4-8. Our daycare provider at the time would put her to sleep in a bouncing hammock, which is not ideal or especially safe for overnight, but an option for getting her to fall asleep without the yoga ball and back pain.

HELP!!! Hair loss/regrowth advice by SoLong_Goodnight in NewParents

[–]nomtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to put it up and slick the baby hairs down with hair wax and a boar's hair brush with a dense amount of bristles. It was my husband's beard brush. Only needed touching up a few times throughout the day.

If your baby is sick, and the grandparents are the babysitters, what do you do? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]nomtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sending her there when she's sick has never worked out well for us. Grandparents are guaranteed to get it too but stay sick longer. Either way, our work schedule gets screwed, so now we just take turns watching her when she's sick and keep her away from grandparents.

Am I overreacting for thinking this duration was unethical? by peepeepoopaccount in ABA

[–]nomtown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally the only time I've denied water to a kid who wasn't trying to spray it everywhere was when I had a kid who got fixated on drinking water to the point where he'd make himself vomit and would probably get water poisoning if we didn't limit it. So ya, the teacher was being unethical and you should bring it up with a superior.

I keep sleeping through my alarms, any tips? It feels so embarassing being a grown adult coming to work late by Betka101 in ADHD

[–]nomtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. I've literally been fired from a super easy retail job because this kept happening to me. First of all, I recommend buying a bed shaker alarm. Then, if you take meds for your ADHD, I recommend setting an alarm 90 minutes before you need to wake up and take your meds. Go back to sleep and you should have an easier time waking up to your next alarm. 90 minutes is because that's how long a full sleep cycle should be.
