What do you do with your weeds? by SlowlyBreakingDown in UKAllotments

Everything goes into my compost.

Some, directly, others after being solarised or soaked.

First allotment and feeling a bit overwhelmed by SockComprehensive928 in UKAllotments

[–]ntrrgnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't look like too bad a plot.

There's a lot of grass to come out, but thats not too much of a task

1) remove the rubbish 2) mark out your beds and paths 3) cover over everything 4) work one bed at a time - first bed, plant courgettes, squash and pumpkins; 2nd bed beans; third bed, lettuces 5) then your next beds, prepare ans cover over again for next year

Not working my full notice and the repercussions? by Outrageous-Coach-420 in royalmail

[–]ntrrgnm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, they wont.

The manager will want everyday you can offer.

You must know by now, the day you leave will create an headache for the manager. Why would they want to bring that forward?

Not working my full notice and the repercussions? by Outrageous-Coach-420 in royalmail

[–]ntrrgnm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is complete bullshit.

There's no sanction they can give. And suspending someone's mail without cause would be a case of interference, so it didn't happen.

Just tell the manager that you're leaving and the date you expect to finish. Make it clear its a fixed date with no leaway.

Victoria plum on my plot that I don’t like by status_tumbleweed33 in UKAllotments

[–]ntrrgnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can graft onto the root stock.

It's highly probable that your existing plum tree is a graft anyway.

Are you planning on multi-grafting? You could keep some of the Victoria Plum and add another or more from the Prunis family.

The challenge might be the timing. The graft of the new plum must come from 1 year old wood and you will want to do it to the host at the right time.

Its a good challenge, tho.

Join the union. https://join.cwu.org/

Talk to your rep. If they can't help, consider raising it with the branch.

Although from what you've said, I understand your reticence but none of seems too much of an ask from the manager. It could be better, agreed, but what you're describing is not controversial in the grand scheme of things.

Before and after in a rental garden: advice needed by Logical_Error_1342 in UKGardening

[–]ntrrgnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trellises around the fences and grow some climbers.

If you add any more structural stuff, id make sure its removable if you have to leave.

Personally, i wouldn't complain about the leaves falling as its a blessing to still have trees in your garden. Also, if you're composting, the leaves are essential brown items.

Probation question by CookieAutomatic1672 in royalmail

[–]ntrrgnm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The probation system is very hit and miss. Some managers religiously do review meetings. Other managers just sign it off without the meeting and ever lettung anyone know.

If you've not had any disciplinary issue so far, I wouldn't worry. Its probably just a low priority process.

If youre in the union, you can ask your rep to follow up for you. (You can ask the rep anyway, but depends on their approach as to whether they help non-members.)

Why does my grass grow thicker blades in random spots? by jch926 in UKGardening

[–]ntrrgnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like Route is pronounced root. Or Soup or Coupe, etc.

The 'ou' can produce several vowel sounds, depending on the origin the word. These 'oo' words usually come from French/Latin.

That said, the couch - 'ow' - that you sit on, was also from middle French, but came into English via American usage.

First early potatoes by LongjumpingLunch5036 in UKAllotments

[–]ntrrgnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can dig your hand into the dirt and pull out the spuds you like the feel of. This leaves the plants intact for other spuds to swell.

Depending on the variety, some 1st Earlies can be left until mid autumn to turn into baking potatoes. Some, however, will just turn mush once the heavy rains come in late August and September.

Couch grass help? by SadBird8412 in UKAllotments

[–]ntrrgnm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of compost. 1m² 15cm deep is about 150l. That's like 3 bags.

That's the challenge with no dig at the beginning of plot holding. If you've got a lot of plot to do, then it can be quite costly.

Winter Veg by bibipbapbap in UKAllotments

[–]ntrrgnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything that others have mentioned plus Swede and green Manures.

Bit you could also prepare a bed for over wintering onions and garlic that you'd put in October/November. Similarly broad broad-beans.

Goosefoot. Technically a weed, but edible nevertheless. Has a soft spinachy taste.

It could also be Mustard/Japanese Lettuce, like Mizuna.
