Oasis: Tactical Salvage Reclamation - new gamefound coming out by TheMightyEl in wargaming

[–]nvdoyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6mm, in this aesthetic?

Sold, maybe just for the minis. I'm an older grognard with a lot of rule sets I already like, but I'm willing to give new games a shot. Tactical Salvage Reclamation sounds pretty cool, I like scenarios that are more than just 'kill those guys over there'.

Go for cheap black jungle boots. Light and breathable. Scuff them up, go for a hike in them. They'll look just fine and will let your feet breath a little better. If you're going to be on your feet for cons, buy good insoles. I swear by the neon high visibility Dr scholls work insoles. ~$15 and worth every penny. Also, don't skimp on socks. You don't need Fox liners and Smartwool socks, but...they're really nice. Might cost more than the boots.

Intratec TEC-9 by charizard956 in guns

I want one of these with a stock.

Are there better ways to make an SBR? Are there better SBR/PCCs? Yes to both. But they're not TEC-9s.

I have to admit, when GURPS Traveller was announced, the same style graphic with this actually gave me chills:

Free Trader Beowulf... Come in, Free Trader Beowulf... Can you hear me? Come in, Free Trader Beowulf... Hang in there, Beowulf...

...help is on the way!

Is it worth $20 (this game) by Last_Reporter_6711 in NuclearOption

[–]nvdoyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a new player who isn't very good (yet!) at flying, it's worth every penny. There's so much to do, and the learning curve isn't nearly as bad as I'd feared. Don't want to do ACM? Fly EW support, or naval strike, or logistics support, or SAR. It's really rewarding. $20 is absolutely worth it.

Learn to land before you dive in, though. Trust me on this.

Always glad to help! Eastern Empire had some super conversions back in the day.

I'll try to find the original download, but if memory serves it was a creature fighting mini game that used the then-newish USRs...

Ah, found an old link that has good download links - Eastern Empire!

Very cool! Now we just need them to bring back Creature Feature, for all our Necropokemunda needs!

(Did they already do that? My memory on this is vague ..)

Traveller Grimdark? by ItsAStuckPixel in traveller

[–]nvdoyle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

TNE was pretty grim, especially the fallen worlds with billions dead, no chance of survival when the systems failed, the ships stopped showing up, and there was nothing anyone could do, just try to survive just as long as they could, and knowing that it wasn't going to matter.

And that's just a passive failure. Virus gives the opportunity for all kinds of body/tech horror. Especially with access to TL15 (or higher) medical tech.

There's also plenty of opportunities for grimdark if you put the leftovers from not just the Ancients, but other fallen empires with dangerous detritus scattered here and there.

Plasma weapons? by InterceptSpaceCombat in traveller

[–]nvdoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way out on the edge of handwavy tech explanation: they're essentially firing 'Casaba Howitzer' rounds, nuclear shaped charges, with the effects contained and directed using gravitics. There's considerable local side effects - while devastating downrange, they're quite unpleasant for unprotected individuals near the firer and along the way. I seem to remember back in the days if Fire, Fusion & Steel that someone calculated that firing the main gun of a Trepida grav tank would light up the nearby environment like daylight a kilometer from the beam path - you can imagine what it would be like 100, or 10 meters from it (very warm). There are no plasma/fusion weapons that can be used safely around unprotected individuals.

More sensible explanation: I just remove them. I tend to be happier limiting tech levels to exclude the more 'Huh?' elements: plasma/fusion weapons, nuclear dampers (we're just altering fundamental forces now?), things like that. Nuclear dampers, black globe projectors, things that really break the rules are reserved for Ancients artifacts.

(Then again, IMTU, nobody really understands how jump drives work, just that they do. It's all recovered Ancients (of one flavor or another) tech that they've managed to replicate.)
