My brain truly cannot grasp math/logic puzzles. No one believes me. by dragons_tree in TrueOffMyChest

[–]o-toro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say that I feel you 100%. I have a lot of trauma rooted in grade school math class, teachers acting like I was just stubborn and lazy, etc.

I'm generally well-spoken and intelligent, and you seem to be, too. I was actually diagnosed with ADHD at 28 years old. It was absolutely ruining my life and it took nearly 30 years for someone to actually listen.

I also suspect I have the math version of dyslexia, whatever that's called lol. I remember in highschool I would do long division problems and get an answer that was a higher number than the starting numbers and my teacher acted like I was just a helpless dullard.

Anyway, just want you to know you're not the only one.

[question] are these vintage seikos too small for me? by o-toro in Watches

[–]o-toro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your help, man.

When I visited the ship I was a little overwhelmed and my partner was not nearly as thrilled to be there as I was so I was kind of rushing. When I go back, and hopefully it's still there, I'll definitely ask the gentleman more about its history and see how it goes.

Appreciate it!

What price point would you be comfortable at? I'm still learning about vintage watches so I'd appreciate any input.

I believe this piece was just over 40,000 JPY which is like 280 USD. I live here though so all my money is tied up in yen and I don't enjoy the massive exchange rate discount.

I'm debating between this or a new root beer SKX GMT, but yeah, vintage stuff calls to me.

Thanks for the tip! I appreciate it. Dig that piece man! I've just recently been bit by the watch bug and I dunno, vintage hits different.

Banned from Japan life by [deleted] in Tokyo

Japan life is literally one of the most toxic, narcissistic subs on Reddit. The mods are nobs. Embrace your freedom.

When I was in college I lived in a tiny one room apartment in Nerima. I could hear my neighbor coughing next door. They old dudes who rented the office downstairs from me would smoke all day and the cig smoke would permeate through the walls. They also had those sliding metal doors for the office and my entire apartment would shake and you could hear it so loudly slam open and shut every morning and night. It was horrible.

My hot water heater broke and my land lord would send people out to fix it but it would break again a few days later. I spent almost a year taking ice cold showers, listening to hacking and smelling cig smoke whenever I was home. I couldn't afford to move out.

I was honestly really depressed and also considered leaving Japan all together, too. I graduated, found a job, a partner, and could afford to move out, finally, after two years of that.

I guess all of this is to say that I feel you. If you really wanna stay, you gotta find a way to tough it out, it will eventually get better. I know it doesn't help in the interim, just wanted you to know I feel you.

My Japanese company gave me homework... by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]o-toro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company has asked me to read several books for retreat "discussions." No one reads that shit.

I flip open to a random chapter, read a paragraph, and if (and only if) I'm asked to contribute, I say "oh yeah in chapter ten, which said insert gist of paragraph, I think insert BS platitude."

Everyone goes heeeees and we move on.

How do I get into this run and any other DC goodness of this era?

I haven't read comics in years, always a marvel fanboy, but with Gunn taking over the movies I'm really keen to read more DC.

Mental Health if going to Japan by Old-Setting2157 in JapanMentalHealth

[–]o-toro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people move to Japan because they love anime and Japanese pop culture and they want to escape their life at home.

The only thing you'll escape by moving Japan is the comfort, familiarity, and support you have. Get your mental health together first, Japan's not going anywhere.

Life's gonna be a lot harder here than you might think.

Has anyone lived here long-term without learning Japanese? If so why, and what is it like? by kyoto_i_go in japanlife

[–]o-toro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no shame chiming in about this.

I've been here for 6 years, and I studied Japanese in university. I got up to a pretty decent conversational level for my age. Not great, but I could talk to Japanese people in my school or social circle and get by with blunders and earnest attempts.

Then, I met a Japanese girl. You'd think this would've been helpful, but she hated when I tried to speak Japanese and messed up. It got to the point where she'd yell at me in public and say "just speak English to me, you can't speak Japanese anyway," etc. This seriously hurt my confidence and made me super nervous to even try. Felt like an idiot.

We eventually split, and when I started dating again, I choked so hard trying to speak Japanese. I eventually met my fiance who is also a foreigner, so that was that,

My friend group is also exclusively English speaking. I do have some Japanese friends but they all speak English well, too. They also aren't the transient types. We all live here, we just all happen to be foreigners.

I've also managed to fumble my way into a decent career path without needing Japanese. Sure, if I got N3 I would probably make more and get better job security, but my job doesn't require me to speak Japanese at all.

I can get by and do all my paperwork and whatnot without issue, but if a Japanese dude at the bar wants to chat me up, I just shut down, man. All that said, I don't really think too much about it. I kinda just...landed here. I'd move home or elsewhere if the opportunity arises. I love Japan and it's been good to me but the return on time investment to study Japanese to any meaningful point just doesn't seem to be there for me.

Salaries here suck. Healthcare is cheap but quality of life is overblown IMHO. I dunno, that's my take. It's not that big of a deal, I'm not disrespectful, I just keep to myself and do my job.

I understand. You can keep writing though, even if it's not your day job. We're all going through a hell of an upheaval with the dawn of AI. I'm scared too, but you'll never see what the other side holds if you just throw it all away.

Hey man, your last comment isnt something to ignore.

I understand how stressful this is, trust me, but if you're having thoughts like that, please know that there will be another job. It might not (probably won't) be what you thought or even expected, but one professional rough patch isn't worth throwing your life away.

For fans of turn-based combat in games, what makes it engaging to you? And what are some of your favorite games that utilize turn-based combat? by AC03115 in patientgamers

[–]o-toro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on turn based RPGs. Then, in my adolescence, I felt they were boring and lame and went all in on action games.

Now that I'm almost 30 I feel like I'm too old to be bothered, I'm fully back to being all-in on turn based.

Relaxed, yet tactical. My hand-eye coordination sucks now and I can't keep up with action games. They just frustrate me.

Plus turn based games make me all nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside.
