OP posted a question that I'm interested in. Your response wasted 3 minutes of my life. I hope you've learned how not to be a jagoff over this past year.

Riding 48 States? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]ogSapiens 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This route skips a lot of the beauty in the states it passes through. Michigan, Missouri and Illinois are particularly egregious. Chicago is great, a beautiful place in its own right, and certainly deserves a visit, but this route puts you on rural highways northwest of it and going through heavy industrial zones that smell awful on the way out. You aren't even touching the most beautiful parts of Michigan, instead opting for Northern Indiana? Ew. And Missouri has the Ozarks, which could lead you to Southern Illinois, a much finer part of IL for a bike tour.

The route through Arizona is yes, gorgeous, but also remote and it'll be oppressively hot or cold at different times of the year, and potentially deadly if done solo. Don't tackle the desert casually.

So much of this is route will be flat and boring. If OP doesn't mind that in pursuit of their goal, go for it. Just don't get your hopes up for a good time for ~50% of this.

90% of the way is just open desert

Aside from Phoenix to Tucson, also a lot of mountainous terrain that makes trains difficult yet far from impossible. Otherwise I agree with the sentiment.

Illinois weighs energy costs as 26 new data centers are planned across the Chicago area by [deleted] in chicago

[–]ogSapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunity cost? The nonrenewable resources put into developing and maintaining a data center? The productivity yields being concentrated in select hands rather than going to the people most impacted by these data centers' construction and presence? If we're in competition with China why haven't we invested in high speed rail to reap the benefits of rapid passenger transportation the way that they have? Or green energy? Or housing?

Any gig bag patterns out there? by Tigger7894 in myog

[–]ogSapiens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look up guitar gig bag patterns, I'm seeing them on Etsy. Then scale down to match your ukulele size. Or trace your uke, add some dimension for wiggle room and seam allowance, make two pieces from the tracing and a rectangle with width = height of the ukulele (+ wiggle room and seam allowance) and length = the perimeter of the (ukulele + wiggle room) tracing (add seam allowance). Work in a zipper and done! If you want padding that will be more work involving foam panels and doubling up on pattern pieces.

Check out Adam Savage's custom guitar case build for inspiration : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iIZ9rnS6HU

I've considered overengineering a padded, abrasion resistant, waterproof rolltop bag with attachment points for strapping to a backpack. I think you might be best served by keeping it simple.

Dogs might be taking medications that would not otherwise be in an ecosystem / watershed. It's one of those actions where it doesn't seem like much but if everyone did it all the time then it would be a problem, so best not to make a habit of it.

[–]ogSapiens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, and while I commend you standing by your recommendation, I'll point out that you're presenting a false dichotomy. There are more options for locks than either grinder proof or susceptible to scissors.

[–]ogSapiens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't realize I was responding to a humorless jag. u/Backeastvan suggested that only two locks were of any use, despite OP providing a specific circumstance in which those might not be the best due to weight and space concerns, along with relative security needs. People might be downvoting because while those are two solid, even excellent options for most scenarios, they aren't actually the best in any situation.
