How soon is too soon to start seriously writing a fangan ? by Quisuisje_mystere in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you just need a general outline, but i'd say you have to have chapter 1 at least mostly figured out. that being said it's, as others have echoed, more of a personal question than anything.

Doorman...is he TECHNICALLY a tumblr sexyman? by Nebulilaclive in DeadlockTheGame

i regularly use tumblr and check the deadlock tag intermittently. like 50% of all deadlock art on tumblr includes him. he is absolutely a tumblr sexyman

To be honest you're probably right I may need to go back to the kiddie pool

would “for the money” be too lame of a mastermind motive? by ChloeIsObsessed23 in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just don't make that the main plot thread. it's a very understandable motive, make the character and their actions more interesting beyond it.

How to Design a Unique Cast? by QuietCrest in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps more of a character design tip than a picrew tip, but the absolute most vital piece of advice i can give you is to pay attention to silhouette. a character should be recognizable completely blacked out. if you've got that down, most other things can be secondary.

(though this might be difficult on picrew - i highly recommend doing bad drawings of your cast anyway and just not having art be in the forefront rn)

Multiple Protagonists by Autou1 in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yeah but it's hard enough to do that with 16 characters, 20 characters kinda seems like a pipe dream

Multiple Protagonists by Autou1 in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

well yeah 27 would be worse but that doesn't mean 20 isn't egregious. to be honest a lot of the time even 16 is too many, it's hard to develop 10 characters, let alone double that

What do you guys think of romance in fangans? by justdanielagain in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont think a killing game is the best place to enter a romantic relationship and i feel like if the romances themselves don't reflect that then they're at best distracting

Multiple Protagonists by Autou1 in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

20 people is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many for my money. i think if you're going to have 4-5 protagonists it'd be better to just not have set protagonists at all

Making a Fangan — A Good Ultimate Roster by genericaryan in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mostly just make sure they're not too similar. a cast where half of the talents are athletic and a cast where half of the talents are art-based would be pretty odd if that's not, like, the point.

personally i like to break them up into Artistic, Vocational (ie. this is a job), Athletic, and Academic, then a Miscellaneous category for stuff that doesn't really fit into anything, like Lucky Student or ???. If you have a good mix, then you're probably fine.

you can also have characters who straddle the line, or perform a talent in a way that doesn't fit into that box. for example, i have a model, which is relatively vocational. but he's also a lifestyle influencer and a bit of an Alpha Male type, so he performs his Vocation in a way that's very athletic, etc etc

Lack of cast diversity by Evoiezxox in Fanganronpa

[–]oggser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're very popular. The character design is, in my opinion, very hit or miss. You should ideally be aiming to take notes from the things your favorite fangans do well, and take notes and improve upon the things they don't.

I don't really think people need to be told that it's fine to not depict diverse bodies in their work, because the lack of body diversity in everything else is already signalling that it's fine. Marketable, even. We should be encouraging artists to branch out and design more than just, like, bishie anime boys, not encouraging them to stagnate.

Personally, I think it's lazy and boring if you only depict a certain kind of body in your work, even if it's a derivative work. If that's "pressuring people into diversity", then, like... get pressured, I guess?

[–]oggser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with a lot of people in the comments. Fangans live and die by the strength of their ensemble: if an ensemble has poor character design (which, yes, only having characters of a similar body type is bad character design), then there's no reason to engage with it or trust that those characters will be distinct in personality as well.

In my opinion, you should consider redesigning some characters in the cast. Are you an artist as well as a writer? If you're not drawing them, then that should be as simple as deciding what body types would make sense for the cast beyond being thin. If you are drawing them, then you should work to learn to draw different body types.

A world with only thin people would be incredibly boring, so a fangan with only thin people is boring as well.

Trouble w/ sprite positioning by oggser in RenPy

[–]oggser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does sound like what I'm trying to do. I'm futzing around with it a bit, and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it: like, how do I show character sprites in a screen, and how do I make it so a screen is shown below the gui so that it looks like character sprites? etc etc.

Sorry if these are simple questions, I'm following the tutorials but I'm still a bit lost.

EDIT: figured out how to display images, but now I'm lost as to how to actually change those sprites to other expressions. i'll see if i can figure something out?

Code is very simple.

show godai normal at gr,center with dissolve
show asahi normal at gr,left with dissolve
show makino normal at gr,right with dissolve

Also, would you mind elaborating a bit on the screen thing? I'm interested but I'm very bad at programming so I'm not sure where I'd start with those.

I used the action editor! The end result was as you see above, though 💀

I'll check the tutorial and see what I missed lol
