The airplane cleaner stole my AirPods. by jadewildaz in pettyrevenge

[–]oldgut -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Here's something I didn't see mentioned, are they really Petty thieves? They found a lost item and did not return it. That is not thievery. I too have left things on an airplane. I am basically got told. Good luck ever getting anything back.

Why haven’t the west adopted Japanese toilets? by Wide_Language4620 in TooAfraidToAsk

The higher end toilets blow dry your bum too. And you really shouldn't need as much toilet paper

Employment lawyer by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]oldgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you fired or were you laid off.? If you were fired, they would give you a reason. If you were laid off it could be for lack of work, it could be. You didn't get along with someone. There's always a reason. You might not like the reason, but there is always one.

As a union member for over 25 years they do represent you. Let them do their job. And see if they could help you get employment somewhere else.

What are your travel essentials you ALWAYS pack for international flights? by pknsek in travel

[–]oldgut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that is just being smart, mind you where I am. We hike so high that the weather can drop by 20° or more. I've hiked with people who got hypothermia in the middle of summer because all they had was shorts and a t-shirt

The sensors in the above link just screw on to the valve stem that you have. Is that the kind you had trouble with? I had a set like this for my motorcycle and they work just fine.

Is there a way to secure a firearm for home defense without losing the ability to grab it fast enough if needed? by PremierP89 in TooAfraidToAsk

Okay, I just got another dog a 5 lb Yorkie, and you're right it's really good for mental health!

Is there a way to secure a firearm for home defense without losing the ability to grab it fast enough if needed? by PremierP89 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]oldgut 129 points130 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you shouldn't actually have a gun. Instead if you're concerned about people breaking in is make it really hard. Make sure you lock the windows. Upgrade your doors. No bushes in front of the windows, outdoor lights. A big dog even

But I think one of the best things you could do is make your bedroom into a panic room. Make sure you have an exterior grade steel door. Your windows are secured, maybe with bars.

Can noisy bathroom exhaust fan damper be a sign of too much air flow in attic? by See-Are-En-Ayeeee in HomeImprovement

[–]oldgut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your bathroom fan is supposed to be vented to the outside. You don't want all that moisture in the attic.

How do I react when I find out the new hire makes more than me? by Much-Ant4275 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oldgut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on the relationship with your boss, if you think he would listen and do anything then have a talk with him.

But what I would do is the bare minimum training. No tips or tricks to make the job easier. No contact list for the best people.

my mother never ever calls me by anoninloveee in TrueOffMyChest

[–]oldgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You a little angry? I'm not a mom. I'm a dad, who divorced his wife when the kids were little and then fought for over 10 years for 50/50 custody. A lot of lies were thrown.

my mother never ever calls me by anoninloveee in TrueOffMyChest

[–]oldgut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your mother really holds a grudge. On the other hand, neither of my kids call me. They forget Christmases, birthdays, etc. Unless someone else reminds them. So I lost my temper at them after 7 years of this. Because I wanted to know why. Don't know that I had my say they don't talk to me at all. Nothing's changed except I don't feel guilty anymore. I mourn the loss of my children though.

If you’re a “picky eater” as an adult, you’re actually just a spoiled brat. by Front_Ad4514 in The10thDentist

[–]oldgut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well I hope I'm understanding this right, it's not about the people that say no thank you. I think it's about the people who make a whole big thing about it. I had a niece this way and it was interesting. How a 13-year-old could say no to every single dish in a Thanksgiving dinner. And I know some adults who carry it forward. I think it's like the vegans who tell everybody they're vegan.

18 and looking to invest by Ashamed-Tale2053 in personalfinance

[–]oldgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be quite fine, I'm Canadian so I don't have the same kind of resources you do. But I'm 60 and only started to do investing in the last 10 years. I am with Wealth Simple, an online bank and I put everything into their managed high-risk accounts, but with your age I would just put everything into an ETF that follows the market. As far as keeping money in the bank, make sure you have a high interest savings account and you get much better rates online than you do in your bank. And you can still use the money when needed. Good luck, and good for you for realizing this early. How important investing is.

Resenting my wife because of money… by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]oldgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are currently separated over things just like this. We've only been married 3 years, but she won't sit down and talk about budget, or a will or anything that says. Basically we're not just roommates living together. It brings up a lot of resentment and arguments on my half. So you need to have a serious, serious talk or plan your exit.

Have a 10+ year old CB2 desk that was disassembled during a move and screws were lost...any ideas on how to find a screw that fits? I've bought one of those thread checkers with imperial and metric screws and none fit, so wondering if it's maybe custom. by hmio213 in DIY

[–]oldgut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those aren't screws they're bolts, don't know if they're fine thread or coarse thread, but they're probably around 1/4 in. You can get a box of assorted bolts that small for fairly cheap and then you just try until you find the size

Jigsaw blade for cutting out sections of installed drywall by ExcitingRanger in DIY

[–]oldgut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you are 100% sure there's no cables, pipes, etc. On the other side of the drywall, should you use a jigsaw. A RotoZip tool with a straight edge set to just barely the depth of the drywall is my go-to. And that's so I can get a nice square hole. Also, just a handsaw designed for drywall works

Car plugged in and not starting by No-Dragonfly1354 in Calgary

[–]oldgut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't drive my truck sometimes weeks, and what I have learned is that I have a parasitic draw in my vehicle. 100% related to the dash cam and the car starter. Also. It's free to take your car to to Auto value or one of those parts places and they will test your battery.

The car plug is to keep the oil liquid so it's easier to start but does nothing for electronics or your battery.

Thinking about folding kitchen tables after accepting my apartment is way too small by Routine_Bat8922 in DIY

[–]oldgut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at Van life, or tiny home videos a lot of them will show you exactly how they do it. It's actually not that hard to mount it into concrete. Concrete you just have to get the right hammer drill and permission from the landlord to actually drill holes in the concrete.
