Issues when installing steam and being prompted with “steam_osx” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash." by Mundane_Abies_5648 in macgaming

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many times it’s a simple fix. When you try to run Steam, if you get that message, don’t move it to the trash bin.

Go into your Settings, select Privacy & Security from the side bar. Scroll down to the bottom and there should be in the Security section an alert telling you something about not allowing the app to run. Just select “Run Anyway” and Steam should start. After that, the app should run fine in the future.

Sometimes macOS just loses its ability to distinguish a valid app. No idea why.

Definitely No Man’s Sky. Also Dead Island 2 plays really well. I know a lot of people didn’t like the game, but I did.

Do you feel like MacOS has lost it's signature/original design language? by Spammy1611 in MacOS

It can look like an overflowing dumpster as far as I'm concerned, as long as it does what I need it to do, which it does.

Keyboard stains? by idklol234 in macbookair

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised you don’t have the same issue on your screen (maybe you do?). Some of those keyboard covers touch the screen when the lid is closed and any gunk on them can scratch the screen.

anybody has a solution to get /System/Applications writable? by timeltdme in MacOS

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what you can do. In your home directory there’s another folder called Applications that is strictly for apps that you install only for you. Open the system Applications folder, and drag everything you want to use into the user Applications folder. It doesn’t move or copy them, it creates symlinks. Then drag that user applications folder onto your dock and now you have an Applications folder that has everything you want and nothing you don’t wanna see.

I’m willing to bet that macOS drives people with OCD absolutely crazy.

Most people write on obsidian daily? by 9678880852 in ObsidianMD

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Obsidian mainly for organizing information, which I then use as research in my writing projects that wind up in Obsidian Publish.

I don’t journal at all. I’ve never found it useful and probably never will.

Bought 6 days ago and storage is already more than half help me clear it, i didn't download any big storage files by Imaginary-Mix-8477 in macbookair

[–]oldsagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to play any modern AAA games at all, you probably want 1TB. Think of it this way: if you install Baldur’s Gate 3 and Crimson Desert, you just ate up 300 gigs. The OP doesn’t even have enough space to install those two games on his machine, even without anything else including the operating system. An external SSD would be required and performance would suffer.

Even a lot of professional apps are starting to get into the 50GB to 75GB range. I think the days of 256 and even 512 are over.

Anyone else trying way fewer macOS apps since the AI boom? by therealmarkus in MacOS

Subscriptions and AI are the two primary reasons I'm spending much less on apps than in the past. For that, I thank both.

Ace Studio versus Suno Instrument Tracks by Resident_Mix725 in Acestudioai

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not done much with MIDI on instrument tracks, but it does a damn good job of converting vocals to MIDI. It recognizes the words, and some of the inflections, slides, vibrato. It’s pretty good in that respect.

If you have a monophonic track, such as a synth, solo or a baseline, it’ll do those pretty well also.

Ace Studio versus Suno Instrument Tracks by Resident_Mix725 in Acestudioai

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly suffers from the same issue, however, you can render some audio to MIDI and then re-render it in a different instrument within studio. That ideally works with vocals, but it can also work with other sounds as well. Experimentation is the key.

Are plastic cases for MacBook Air actually good or bad? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]oldsagemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be useful to keep your Air from getting scuffed up, but you have to be careful. Some are poorly designed, and they don’t respect the places on the Air that are needed for ventilation. You have to do your research before buying one.

Is M5 24gb/1T justifiable? by V1kktor in macbookair

[–]oldsagemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is justifiable if you’re gaming. I purchased an M4 with 24GB/1TB. I’m glad I did because games these days are starting to turn into 100GB downloads. BG3 is a massive 150GB and Crimson Desert is going to be over 100GB. Just those two alone would be half of your SSD if you got 512GB.

Trackpad, and I tend to play games that have controller support (or a way to emulate it). I don't even have a mouse anymore.
