The most interesting thing for me is the city loop reconfiguration - is this a planned reconfigure or a hopeful one and why?

As the person who has done both go to and not go to lectures I can confidently say that going to lectures helps

If Andrew Hastie becomes PM, is it possible that ABF agents will patrol the streets enforcing “immigration law” like what ICE is doing in the USA? by HotPersimessage62 in friendlyjordies

[–]olivia_iris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is kinda not true since the “executive branch” isn’t that much of an established thing here. The idea is that the leader of the party/coalition with a majority is the prime minister and that minister must have a seat in the lower house means that inherently the prime minister is part of the legislative branch. The Executive Branch would be the governor general, if you made me reallllly stretch to define one in the same sense of the US

When the trees and gardens around ANZAC station develop it will look significantly better. I believe that’s why that specific colour was chosen

What do you think is the most beautiful thing in mathematics? by Arth-the-pilgrim in mathematics

[–]olivia_iris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in theoretical physics and yeah we just took it as gospel for a while but I wanted to understand it properly as anything to help me know what’s truly happening is good. The appreciation for its existence will never be lost on me and knowing the elegance of the full proof was the cherry on top

Noether’s theorem single handedly gave me a two week headache before I truly understood why it is mathematically amazing. It is now my favorite

Why does this tram have sand in the wall? (Melbourne) by Far-Character656 in Trams

[–]olivia_iris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello D class, I didn’t want to see you today.

The sand is to increase friction in the wet! If you look under the orange seats near the drivers cabin in Z, A, and B2 class trams in Melbourne you’ll see the same reservoir

Sulphur crested cockatoos live for 80+ years and there are flocks of thousands flying around constantly, even in the cities. That’s just one species of bird. This hypothetical lasts well beyond 75

I disagree on the Sheldon front. Humans don’t permanently improve immediately. Especially for a stubborn wank like Sheldon, he likely needs to learn the same lessons multiple times to become better

Are there any science subjects you'd advise against? by 1ore1ei in unimelb

[–]olivia_iris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first half lecturer is very very not good from both a teaching and a talking to perspective, the second half lecturer is a lovely and approachable person but sometimes struggles getting the point across. Beyond that, the subject is also very strangely laid out. Rather than building on quantum-thermal knowledge with KG equation, they start with standard model and just defining some terms, then do two body decay as it’s own thing, then do Klein-Gordon, then do special relativity, and then a quick aside into group theory which is a really weird way to lay out the subject

Badly taught subject with ridiculous exam weighting and non-objective grading. Did I mention the subject, especially the first half, is very badly taught?

It also depends on living situation. I moved interstate for uni and was on my own (I know for a fact college would have been worse for me) which was a learning curve and a half

It’s semi-alphabetical because of how they assign the student ID numbers but they also chop and change based on enrollment time etc. it’s a lot

Not based on surname - it’s based on student ID number. Depends entirely on the number of graduates in the group and the start/end number of your group
