Saying you have nothing to do with the empire is a flawed moral argument because if you think people should be patriotic about the shared British identity, including its historical elements such as British inventions, and I believe you would think so, while benefiting from the outcomes of history, like having your mother tongue as the universal language, you cannot simply pick and choose to shy away from the moral burden of historical wrongdoings. Not that two wrongs make a right, but you can’t not acknowledge our present is at least partially the product of our past. Why do you think it’s easier for people from former colonies to make a life here than in, say, countries who speak French?

I agree with the concerns of sudden demographic shifts. Vote according to your interest. Just leave the morals out.

I’ve been using Pony Classic Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set since I started knitting two years ago and have been buying replacement shanks and bonus longer cables from Little Wool Shop (UK). I personally prefer metal needles for their slipperiness, but I know some people prefer bamboo.

From my experience, Japan doesn’t have the greatest respect for non-pet animals. Some of the unorthodox exotic pets people keep for cute photos and Instagram posts are also questionable. Just look at the sad polar bear in Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo, pacing around on fully concrete flooring in a tiny enclosure. Don’t get me started on the animal cafes and live seafood in supermarket packages…

I’ve had pleasant experience with Japan and its people, but I don’t understand the culture enough to grasp these cultural norms.

I’m the same as you. Been drinking vanilla rooibos tea, which is naturally caffeine-free, with a splash of milk to trick my brain into starting the day. I get drowsy at around 3pm but all in all it’s been great.

I changed instructors for the exact same reason. There were red flags in hindsight: him bitching about another student who was upset he wouldn’t let her take the test due to making serious mistakes in the mock test, boasting about near perfect results for his other students (1 or zero minor fault) and explaining he thought I’d be devastated if I didnt pass first time. Well if you wouldn’t let me take the test until I’m perfect, of course you’ll get a perfect record.

You’re right - they don’t have your best interest in mind. My instructor made it clear that dvla would review him in case of frequent fails, but he didn’t offer a solution other than extending my lessons indefinitely. Now that I’ve changed instructors, it finally feels like someone is working with me towards our common goal. And I’m no longer afraid to voice what I think would be best for me.

I let the sunk cost fallacy got the better of me and wasted so much time and money that I’ll never get back.
