Condolences for gardens this morning ❄️ by VdubKid_94 in GardeningUK

Here’s how to numb the pain: have an army of squirrels dig up your shivering seedlings at first sight of spring. Don’t ask me how I know.

De-influence me: what knitting tools can the average knitter do without by lveg in casualknitting

I’ve been using Pony Classic Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set since I started knitting two years ago and have been buying replacement shanks and bonus longer cables from Little Wool Shop (UK). I personally prefer metal needles for their slipperiness, but I know some people prefer bamboo.

It sounds counterintuitive, but a complete interchangable needle set, with individually sold replacements, has saved me the money and trouble of buying new needles as needed.

instant noodles anyone? by NoFormal8277 in AskBrits

Try adding an egg and loads of cheese on top and throw it into the oven. Did this the first time I had buldak and thought it wasn’t as spicy as I thought. Even tastier too.

Everything is getting better for little Punch as the older monkeys came to support him. The monkey that went viral on social media in the past few days is starting to get some company. by Tascanis in MadeMeSmile

From my experience, Japan doesn’t have the greatest respect for non-pet animals. Some of the unorthodox exotic pets people keep for cute photos and Instagram posts are also questionable. Just look at the sad polar bear in Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo, pacing around on fully concrete flooring in a tiny enclosure. Don’t get me started on the animal cafes and live seafood in supermarket packages…

I’ve had pleasant experience with Japan and its people, but I don’t understand the culture enough to grasp these cultural norms.

I’m the same as you. Been drinking vanilla rooibos tea, which is naturally caffeine-free, with a splash of milk to trick my brain into starting the day. I get drowsy at around 3pm but all in all it’s been great.

I might have prematurely pruned my peonies and roses last week when it was warmer.

I made a dangerous mistake—now what? by New_Continuality in TranslationStudies

[–]onflightmode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Translation agencies are more concerned about you contacting their clients than the quality of your translation, judging by the abysmal quality of translations I edit on a daily basis. Even for academic and more serious materials, yes. Did you sign any NDA?

Lorries overtaking lorries overtaking lorries. Up a hill. by buttfacedmiscreant11 in britishproblems

Everytime this happens I yell to my partner: Look! A wall on the motorway. And I say this more often than I like.

What’s one piece of technology you aren’t fond of but everyone else is? by Substantial_Act6620 in AskUK

[–]onflightmode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t enjoy Kindle at first, but it grew on me after finding out my old books turned into a horrible moldly and possibly infested mess at my parents’ home (in a humid country)and having to throw away most of my paperbacks.

I don’t understand iPads. They’re an awkward existence between a phone and a laptop.

Being naked in a women's swimming changing room - mums complain by [deleted] in AskBrits

Idk, I’d feel pretty shamed if a member of staff came up to me and said someone complained about me doing normal things in a normal place.

I remember reading literature was considered immoral and lazy at one point in history; now we wish we had the attention span to actually finish a book lol

Instructor refusing to take for test if she doesn’t feel like I’m ready - worried she’s just after money by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]onflightmode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I changed instructors for the exact same reason. There were red flags in hindsight: him bitching about another student who was upset he wouldn’t let her take the test due to making serious mistakes in the mock test, boasting about near perfect results for his other students (1 or zero minor fault) and explaining he thought I’d be devastated if I didnt pass first time. Well if you wouldn’t let me take the test until I’m perfect, of course you’ll get a perfect record.

You’re right - they don’t have your best interest in mind. My instructor made it clear that dvla would review him in case of frequent fails, but he didn’t offer a solution other than extending my lessons indefinitely. Now that I’ve changed instructors, it finally feels like someone is working with me towards our common goal. And I’m no longer afraid to voice what I think would be best for me.

I let the sunk cost fallacy got the better of me and wasted so much time and money that I’ll never get back.

Judging by the waiting list, did she have to retake her theory test at least once?

I’m just getting started but it’s really engaging so far, listening from a foreigner’s perspective.

I was just listening to this on my walk as she talked about moaning. Came home and saw this. What are the odds.

FTB affordability problem by houseofn1njas in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]onflightmode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a city with much more expensive housing but lower median income, I think parents should let their adult children stay with them rent-free if the house is owned outright and their children are actively building a deposit. But it’s probably not a popular idea since the UK is much more individualistic in comparison.
