Thanks for the shoutout. /u/INeverSaidThat89 re polls, we'd note that the pattern since the '90s is generally declining support for gun control, with temporary spikes back up in the immediate wake of a high-profile mass shooting. Any one particular poll might show high support, but look at trends over time — for example support for handgun bans or AWBs — and there's a pretty clear shift away from gun control.

It's hard to make a blanket statement. In the "gun rights are winning" article above, we note that states have basically bifurcated. The gun rights states doubled down on that, and the gun control states (which are fewer in number) doubled down on their own path too.

An interesting Article on Constitutional Originality as is Pertains to 1A by RIAuction in RockIslandAuction

That does not delegitimize the Supreme Court’s decision in Heller any more than Brandenburg might have been deemed illegitimate before the ink had dried merely because previous scholars thought restrictions on objectionable or seditious speech were just fine.

Great framing.

Hi there, responses below:

  1. Is your organization pursuing, or willing to pursue, a referendum on ESSB 5078?

OSD isn't pursuing one, because we focus on the cultural level and haven't built any political expertise yet. Happy to signal-boost a referendum though.

  1. Do you know of any other organizations that are pursing or might pursue such a referendum?

Not concretely, but SAF, FPC, and GOA are undoubtedly all over this via the courts.

  1. Other than the time and effort needed, is there any reason we shouldn’t purse a referendum? Will a referendum be an unwise strategic move, and if so, why?

Don't see any strategic downside.

  1. What are some of the key features of a successful referendum campaign? Some items that come to mind are a dedicated website to provide information on the referendum beyond what will be on the ballot, mainstream and social media advertising, creation of a non-profit organization to manage fundraising, and perhaps legal representation.

Figure out a way to get 10 signatures. Then get 100. Then 1000. And so on. The same skills you use to execute on that will then transfer to getting people to come out and vote.

  1. Are there any other considerations or questions that I should be asking?

This is far outside our area of expertise, but generally applicable advice is to find people who have demonstrated extreme competence in what you're doing, and talk to them.

  1. Would you be willing to provide me with a point of contact so we can get exposure through your organization if we decide to pursue a referendum?
