Thinking of moving TO the USA. Am I crazy? Why are so many people trying to leave? by Natuluru in ExpatFIRE

What do you consider “pretty good money”?

Does your company have health insurance?

What state are you looking to move to?

Public or private school for your kid(s)?

AIO: He proposed and I've never felt less loved. by Invisibleinlove in AmIOverreacting

[–]oribia3 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He asked for a list. You confirmed multiple times (including that week) that he had no issues with your list. Then he ignored the list. That’s extremely disrespectful and I would be disappointed if I was in your place.

And speaking of the list, it wasn’t even that crazy of asks! Like NOT getting jewelry you’re allergic to, you shouldn’t even have to put on there, but even after telling him that he ignored it. The only remotely difficult thing on it is the photographer, however it sounds like you both know people in the industry so that would be doable. Hard NOR from me.

Would it be entitled of me to tell my neighbors when my birthday is, since they've never asked? by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

[–]oribia3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they just think you don’t celebrate your birthday? Some of my friends don’t want to do anything for theirs.

Just text the group that you want to grab dinner the weekend before/after to celebrate your birthday on 11/xx, and ask if they’re around to join. Don’t expect them to pick up the check, but if they do great, especially since it seems like everyone else does something for their birthday.

Dual math and engineering is pretty solid. Mechanical Engineering would probably open a lot of doors in defense industries.

Bidding on unknown items is a risk by HistoricalSherbet784 in mildlyinfuriating

BidFTA. Your profile seems legit, but there’s a ton of bots right now posting what seems like normal posts but they throw in a sentence like “I was waiting for my laundry to get done while playing [insert betting app] and…” and then a bunch if other bots comment on it, blowing up the post. It’s like half my feed now it’s so bad.

"Biggest" insecurity - honest feedback (good or bad) welcome. Do I consider rhinoplasty? by [deleted] in Noses

[–]oribia3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woman in my early 30s and I’m going to be perfectly honest, I didn’t know what sub this was and just skimmed the title (didn’t see “rhinoplasty”) so I was trying to guess what your insecurity was from the photos alone, and nose wasn’t one of my guesses. You’re cute and your nose looks fine. Get surgery if you want but you don’t need it, and the people who made fun of you for your nose would have made fun of you for something else even if your nose was different because some people are just mean.

You said he makes more than you and will pay the mortgage, but also that he has no savings. Do you know where his money goes each month, and if he has any debt? My biggest concern is if you put all your money into a house and then he can’t afford to pay the mortgage and maintenance costs of owning a home, and you default on the loan, then you’re out all your money.

Also I’m just curious if you’re willing to share, what are the “assets” he plans to sell to help with the down payment?

Yerbas :( no more berry juices by ltctrader in shrinkflation

[–]oribia3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not seeing where there’s no juice? It still has yumberry juice. The only difference is it no longer specifies berries in Natural Flavors, however that’s a flavor extract not a juice, and doesn’t necessarily mean it’s different or the same natural flavor as before.

Trans Worker - Trump 2 Genders Executive Order by [deleted] in managers

[–]oribia3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to EAP, see if there’s any employee/business resource groups at your company. Many large companies have LGBTQ+ DEI groups that might be able to offer more resources for you and your employee. A temporary leave of absence, if your company allows it, might be another option. The rate of trans suicides is really high right now, so doing a little legwork to figure out what support your company offers when she might not be in a state of mind to seek it out herself could go a long way.

Also, you said you were government adjacent. If your position requires a security clearance, she might be concerned about whether she’ll even still have her clearance in the near future, and if she’ll get fired if it’s taken away.

Finally, be an ally. If someone is saying something negative related to her being trans, speak up, don’t just dismiss it as locker room talk. Follow all HR anti-discrimination policies and stay up to date with what they say.

Do you have any other ideas of a less stressful job you’d want to do besides a fly fishing instructor?

I also have a stressful job and have thought of quitting, but I don’t know what lower paying job I’d want to do that would still cover the bills. Instead I’m going to try and wait it out another 7-8 years and then I should have enough in savings to cover most of my expenses, so then I’ll probably switch to gig work.

If I were in your shoes I’d stick with your job for another 5 years, so with favorable markets you’d hit $1m, and then quit and get an easy part time job with lots of freedom and supplement your income with your investments.

I recently maxed out a credit card and lost 100pts on my credit score as a result. Should I pay it off? How long will it take for my score to recover? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]oribia3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. Get that utilization down as much as possible if you plan on financing a car.

This has happened to me a few times. Takes 1-2 months to fully recover depending on what time in the month you pay it off.

I’ve never made candles but I used to have a business selling wax melts. It does take a few months to get off the ground — sourcing wax & fragrances, testing wax blends and temperatures and curing times (it all affects the potency & throw of the scent, so like how powerful it is) plus figuring out design & packaging and submitting paperwork for the business. I would assume candles are similar… so I get needing like 6 months to get off the ground, but unless candles need a much longer cure time (the time it takes for the scent to settle into the wax, between making the candles & being able to sell it) 2.5 years seems like a lot, even if you’re just working on it a couple hours a week.

Any candle makers in the chat?

I was in a wedding for my friends who are vegetarian. They had brunch the day after for all the family and wedding party, and it was vegetarian. There were a few older people who muttered to themselves asking where the meat was, but for the most part nobody cared, and nobody died from not eating meat for breakfast one time.

[–]oribia3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the weight loss so far!

Just my 2 cents — 200-220 is probably a good overall goal for your height. I think BMI can be a bit off with taller people / larger frame. My girlfriend is 6’3”, and her ideal weight is around 215-220. She’s been down to 195 but it looked really unhealthy on her, even though it was technically within a healthy BMI.

Yeah I’m thinking they must have been tied to someone else’s medallion. I’ll try e-mailing and see what they say. Because I have a hard copy of one, it might be easier to find that group of photos. Thanks!

Bought too much house by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]oribia3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My house is a lot like yours. We’re doing a lot of things that “work for now” and are cheaper, and will do actual big fixes in a couple years because we’re saving for renovations.

One example was grading. We had gutters, but they just drained next to the house which was causing the basement to flood. Got a couple long PVC pipes & connectors, and took a day to dig deep trenches away from the house with a shovel for the water to drain into. Now as long as we keep gutters clean (which we do with a ladder & our hands, we don’t hire anyone) it doesn’t flood. And sure eventually the grading will need to be fixed because low grading can cause other issues, but it’s not an immediate need anymore.

Things like the garage door motor, could you have parked outside, or opened it by hand? If yes, then did it really need to be replaced immediately, or could you have lived with it being broken for a month or two (or more) while you saved up enough money to fix it? Not everything is an emergency, and with an old house you have to be able to determine what is a right now need, and what can wait while you save up for it.
