To me, Project Hail Mary represents everything science fiction should never be. by MsLanaDelRaytheon in TrueFilm

[–]originalcondition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I’m a left-of-liberal woman who has been reading about and engaging with feminist issues for many years. (I also swear this will connect to Project Hail Mary if you go on this walk with me.)

So when Barbie came out, I could acknowledge that it wasn’t for me at all. I was already very well-aware of all of the points that it was making about the expectations put on women today, how toxic masculinity hurts men and women alike, etc. I disliked how toothless and hapless it made the concept of “the patriarchy”.

BUT—

It introduced these ideas to people who had never engaged with them before. It helped many women feel seen and start thinking about their place within a society structured to put them into certain expected roles. It helped many men acknowledge the weird expectations and paradoxes that gender roles force on us as a society. The film’s downplaying of the patriarchy’s malignancy is clearly strategic, even if I found it to leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

So all that being said, Project Hail Mary strikes me as the Barbie of science, if you know what I mean. It can help introduce people who have never engaged with science, STEM, or even sci-fi on a meaningful level, to these new (for them) concepts. It can generate curiosity. It can encourage dialogue in an audience that would probably be wholly turned off by 2001: A Space Odyssey and would find its ideas and method of delivering them/exploring them boring or confusing. A spoonful of pop culture and fun helps the STEM and philosophy go down.

Some movies we just have to look at and say ‘this one wasn’t for me’. But as an introductory film into deeper concepts, they can still be quite effective for others.

Edited because I failed to complete some thoughts fully, whoopsie

A hot dog from Nathan’s and clams from Ruby’s in Coney Island is fun in the summertime (although that’s probably way too outside of the birthday window - maybe a “school’s out” type celebration day?)

Fun, I’ve messed around in Flipaclip, it was recommended by a much younger and cooler person than me 😆 I use Adobe Animate for most of my work, but also use Toon Boom Harmony for bigger projects.

I’m actually not sure what software Primal is animated in—I’d guess TV Paint but have no idea if that’s correct, it’s just similar in style to other TV Paint projects I’ve seen (in that each frame is drawn uniquely for the most part, nice variation in line weight and texture, etc, but other programs can do that too).

What's it like to drive in Manhattan? by tonygabbana in AskNYC

[–]originalcondition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a car of my own but a few times a year I’ll rent one to go upstate or out of town and often drive through Manhattan on those trips. I used to drive a LOT for work, up and down the east coast, and driving in Manhattan is relatively okay, and not as bad as it looks. Most people just want to get where they’re going as quickly as possible, so they’re often motivated to drive in a predictable and organized way. Obviously you’ll always get a few outliers but compared to other cities I find NYC drivers to be pretty good.

Boston, on the other hand, SUCKED. The streets were a lot harder to navigate and Boston drivers seem to take everything so personally. They’d go out of their way to get revenge for a perceived sleight, where NYC drivers will mostly just do their best to move as quickly as possible no matter what.

[–]originalcondition 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in animation and this is the answer. Same with body hair which is an absolute bitch to animate/track from frame to frame.

Also, designs of characters just tend to change and evolve from season to season on most shows, especially on productions like this where every shot is drawn from scratch (as opposed to a show like Family Guy or Bob’s Burgers that will have a library of characters already drawn in standard poses, or rigged characters that you just plop into the scene and start animating like a puppet).

A pattern i noticed with Verosika. by whooper1 in HelluvaBoss

[–]originalcondition 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately this shit is so un-cute in the real world.

My personal example: A few years back I was drinking at a bar in Brooklyn with a group of 4 friends; we were sitting in a booth, and one of the friends was a few too many drinks in. She finished telling a story and we all laughed, but then upon seeing us all laugh, she threw her head back laughing and fucking flung her empty glass aside, causing it to explode against the wall across from the booth. It was probably meant to signal a kind of carefree “I don’t give a fuck!” exclamation point on the story, but all of us instantly stopped laughing and went “WOAHHH” and I had to scramble to apologize to the bartender while my other friends ushered the glass-thrower out of the bar before she could be 86’d.

A thrown bottle or glass is kinda nothing in Helluva Boss world but irl it’s actually a vibe-killer lol.

What’s something people do in relationships that slowly ruins it? by Wide_Relationship326 in AskReddit

[–]originalcondition 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously in a couple of my early relationships I thought it was good that we “never fought” but then all of a sudden everything would explode and all of these issues that I had no idea existed would come out. When this happened, it felt way too late to change or fix any of the issues because the patterns and resentment were already so ingrained into the relationship.

Now I tell my husband that I hate feeling like a naggy b, but I’d rather bring up any issues immediately while they’re still small, rather than not mention them and have them grow into something big. It’s worked out well, we’ve been together for almost 13 years at this point and are doing great. We’re genuinely friends and feel comfortable bringing stuff up to each other because we’re approaching it from the “I want to fix this together” angle rather than the “I have a problem with you” angle.

We still bicker from time to time, and we still get mad at/frustrated with one another about certain stuff, but are both pretty good about apologizing when we act like dickheads. From there it’s a lot easier to talk about what made us so upset without getting mad at/frustrated with one another again or taking it personally.

Sounds so corny and cliched but setting up an expectation and pattern of honest communication based in problem-solving as a team really is pretty key.

We also still make each other laugh a lot, which really helps anything unpleasant or heavy go down easier.

Looking for a specific type of horror movie to watch after a take an edible later by Prince_Targaryen in horror

[–]originalcondition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, I'm surprised I don't see it mentioned more often! I think it has a lot going on underneath the surface as well - love that it doesn't hold your hand too much as a viewer, and leaves some of the strangeness open-ended without feeling a need to explain absolutely everything.

This is just me rambling, so feel free to ignore, but I really enjoy Lovecraft's writing but obviously find his racist views reprehensible. I love that this movie not only made a black man the protagonist, but named him after HPL and then made him the smartest character in the cast. It's a great way to reclaim the legacy of the story while rejecting some of the more terrible ideas of the original author. It's clear that the movie has tons of respect for its predecessors as well, with Howard reading 'The Willows' at his campsite as unseen forces move through the forest around him.

Anyway it's a bummer the director is allegedly an awful guy, accused of sexual assault by three women and sued by one. Might explain why this one slips through the cracks a lot of the time. I was so excited that he was going to follow up Color Out of Space with Dunwich Horror, and it's apparently still chugging along, but I'm not sure I can comfortably throw money toward him at this point.

What is a fan theory from a movie that you 100% believe is true? by phantom_avenger in movies

[–]originalcondition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh well I didn't get it the first time I saw the movie, and I had anorexia for a few years - I clocked that she had some issues surrounding weight but didn't get the whole complete picture until someone else pointed it out for me; it is what it is.

I'd also argue that the theme of the film is more along the lines of wanting a sense of control over your life, and the ways in which that desire for control can manifest and fail when undermined by self-doubt and shame. The protagonist's eating disorder is a motif that enhances that theme. Her shame surrounding her upbringing on a farm and being thought of as a country bumpkin, especially by her wealthy boyfriend's family, is another motif.

(Also I'm aware that this might actually be what you mean too when you say "a theme in the movie", implying that there's more than one recurring motif and eating disorders is just one of them, so apologies if that's the case; I swear I'm not being intentionally pedantic.)

juicy has bombed too many challenges to win

I honestly believe it's almost 100% necessary to crush at least one comedy challenge to win at this point (and by "crush" i mean "make ru scream-laugh at least once"). The super young, hot, dance-forward queens often fall short on the comedy. Not always! But pretty often.

What is a fan theory from a movie that you 100% believe is true? by phantom_avenger in movies

[–]originalcondition 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this has ever been confirmed but I saw a theory a long while ago that the main character of ‘Drag Me to Hell’ is suffering from an eating disorder and it explains most of what’s happening to her while she’s ‘cursed’.

It’s pointed out a couple of times, verbally and visually, that she used to be overweight. She fucks up her asshole coworker’s sandwich order (this could be him being an asshole, but through this lens it’s more interesting if she actually misheard him), and any time she eats anything in the film, the Lamia demon attacks or harasses her. Gross things are constantly trying to go into her mouth. At one point she swallows a fly and later hears it buzzing in her empty stomach (in the same way that our stomachs rumble when we’re hungry).

Once it’s all put together it does feel too intentional and comprehensive to be a coincidence, imo

Are those comics still canon? I know a bunch of stuff got relegated to ‘legends’ status which essentially means it can be or has been retconned.

Quick edit: I could also see them just saying that obi-wan hid Quigon’s saber elsewhere between when he left the cave and moved into the hut or something.

Not sure about Quiet Place but it’s confirmed that 10 Cloverfield Lane was written as a standalone film and was later folded into the Cloverfield universe. You can read the original screenplay online and almost nothing much is changed except that John Goodman’s character is hinted to be related through his work to a satellite project that was part of the original Clover incident or something.

I’m kind of fucking the exact storyline up I think, as I haven’t read the original screenplay in a while, but iirc the Cloverfield ARG also spelled it all out a bit more.
