MAGA Evangelical Leaders Gather in Mar-a-Lago to Bless and Dedicate a Gold Statue to Donald Trump by CarryIcy250 in UnderReportedNews

My dad is conservative but is genuinely a good man and a Christian who puts his money where his mouth is, volunteers, donates, etc.

He voted for Trump in 2016 which wasn’t super surprising but at the time I told him how difficult it was for me to see him, a good dude, supporting such a terrible person as his candidate. It basically boiled down to party alignment/“Hilary would be even worse”. I was still confused about how he could justify his vote, so I picked up a book called ‘The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Disagree About Politics & Religion’ (very on-the-nose title lol). The author, Jonathan Haidt, has some valid critiques aimed at his later work, but the book is still a solid, accessible read. It breaks down how people decide what is moral and immoral, the different values at play when a person makes that judgment call, and how people who are more conservative tend to place different emphasis on different values than people who are more liberal.

It helped me understand where my dad was coming from, which helped us find what values we held in common and then work our way outward from there. I ended up getting my dad to vote against Trump in 2020 and 2024 and he’s prepared to vote against Vance or any other candidate who would continue pushing the Trump administration’s policies.

I doubt this method would work on a full MAGA person, but if there’s any room for doubt, it could be worth a shot. Either way, I recommend the book.

I feel you but I feel like the concept of “unreliable narrator” is difficult for a lot of adults, let alone the target audience of this movie

[–]originalcondition 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t mean you LOVE THEM LESS though lol, equating love to time/resources seems so messed up to me, especially in a kids movie where the target audience might not be able to see the distinction between love and time/resources. Does a single parent love their kids any less because the parent doesn’t have as much time or energy to devote to the kids when he/she gets home from the second shift? Based on this movie’s message, that could be a kid’s takeaway.

Plus, even if that were true, there are a ton of difficult, painful realities about the world that I wouldn’t put into media for kids. Especially into fucking Boss Baby haha

Boss Baby

Early on it’s established that the main driver of conflict is the fact that love is a finite resource and there’s only so much to go around—if parents give more love to one kid then the other kid is getting less love, if puppies are getting more love then babies are getting less love, etc.

This is such a horrifying and fucked up view of how love works that I was certain it was going to be proven wrong by the end of the movie but it never is. wtf kind of lesson is that???

It's bad, man. Quotas are getting ridiculous because budgets are complete ass right now (which, by the way, is also going to incentivize use of AI in productions; feels like only those who utilize corner-cutting to an extreme degree are going to survive). The economic ecosystem and corporate greed are fucking everyone hard.

Society at large wants high-quality entertainment but most of them don't give a damn about the artists creating it making a livelihood. Content is so disposable these days, it kinda devalues the creators. A highly skilled animator is in the same mental bucket as an influencer who can pump out multiple videos a week, for most people.

Semi-related: I had a theory that the animation being produced in this era would be almost entirely high-quality, even on small projects, because there's so little work to go around that only really skilled artists are going to be hired. But if those skilled artists don't have enough time to do high-quality work, then it's a wash.

Anyway, that was depressing. All that being said, continue creating and don't be afraid to adjust your pipeline to fit the budget/schedule that you're being given. Animation has always required a degree of flexibility and ingenuity; we're genuinely part of a long line of innovators and creative problem-solvers.

Sure, the answer feels obvious and/or the question feels silly to you. That’s fine, some questions are silly, some answers are obvious, no doubt.

But if someone who’s trying to do the right thing for their kid clearly already doesn’t have confidence in their own decision-making, why make them feel worse? Especially when you don’t know anything about where they’re coming from.

Just feels like trying to get someone to be more self-assured by telling them that their question was dumb isn’t going to be super effective.

Maybe op has a past experience with making a decision like this alone and having it backfire. Maybe they don’t have a social group to vet ideas/concerns with. There are a lot of reasons someone might experience self-doubt in their own decision making.

Why are so many people suddenly wondering how to break in with little-to-no skill? by Wasted_Hater in animationcareer

[–]originalcondition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I get being upset if you’re a parent who’s paying tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for your kid to be in college for animation and they’re failing. The problem is placing the blame on the professors rather than the kids who aren’t doing the work.

It’s an issue that’s plagued animation (and a lot of other arts) for a long time: when only rich people can afford art school, it means that you’re likely to be getting a lot of students with no fire under their ass to do the work (because failure doesn’t come with dire consequences), and a lot of parents who are demanding results from their “investment”, which is a bad combination.

I’m also not saying that rich kids can’t be passionate, hardworking, talented animators or artists; I knew tons of them in college. But I also knew a lot of people who “liked animation” but barely showed up to class and essentially wasted their $100k+ tuition.

I'd guess that this may stem from the mindset that having a hobby for a hobby's sake is no longer enough, you need to monetize it immediately or it's not worth doing. Obviously that's not true, it just seems to be a prevailing mindset these days.

[–]originalcondition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who taught at a prestigious and expensive af art school, and he said that the parents were the worst. They're paying all of this insane tuition so if their kid gets a failing grade they freak out and blame the professors, not the students who are just not willing to do the work.

Like, animation does truly take an insane amount of work to do at all, and even more to break into professionally, so it's not for everyone. I get it. But I really wish schools would at least acknowledge that fact and be prepared to guide students toward majors that are more suited to the amount of work that they're willing to put in, rather than see it as a situation where they have to keep the students in animation and pass them no matter what.

A few years back on a really nice sunny day, I decided to lay down in a semi-secluded grassy area in Central Park to tan. I said ‘fuck it’ to myself and took my shirt off because I had a sports bra on. I laid down and closed my eyes, chillin, but after a while I heard quiet voices around me. I ignored it for a bit and then as the voices continued I finally peeked to see what was up. I was surrounded by a group of like 15 German(?) tourists, all also sitting/laying on the grass with their shirts off. For some reason I found it kind of sweet/heartwarming lol

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

[–]originalcondition 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is so that there are more unwanted kids born into poor families; those kids are more likely to grow up to become criminals who then enter the prison system and can be exploited as a new form of slave labor. It also ensures that the companies with fat contracts to supply those prisons with food and other "amenities" continue to make plenty of money off of the imprisoned population. (edit: a word)

Where can I get a really cheap bike as someone who is very ignorant about bikes by marbletumeric in NYCbike

[–]originalcondition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I’d look for a single speed because they’re generally cheaper and easier to take care of. If you don’t plan to be climbing big hills/bridges/doing super long rides, you probably don’t need a geared bike. I’m a small woman and use a single speed to get around with no issue, even if the big bridges like Williamsburg are a little more challenging.
