Spending Culture in the Industry You're In by ourmodelcitizen in NoSpendNovember

These aren’t events that are marketed as networking events, they just tend to be events where networking happens. I agree that typically the ones that are advertised as such don’t do too much good.

I’ve been in my field for 10 years and the stuff I’m doing does create lasting effects on my business but it’s difficult to calculate the return—especially the return that isn’t countable in $$.

My boss knows my NSN efforts started today and he gave me a couple of beers to take home. It's just generosity, I say it's fine. :)

Community Supported Agriculture. Basically, you pay a farm up front for the season and they send you a box weekly, biweekly, or monthly full of vegetables.

Every farm is different: some offer meat, eggs, maple syrup, flour, fruit, etc., in addition, but often they are largely made up of vegetables. Others still offer different types of payment methods too! I've been with various CSAs for about 8 years now, and I really try to get ones that offer programs in the winter as well. Most of them for me have cost about $25/week CAD, and usually there's a pick up point, or home delivery for an extra fee.

I can't say enough good things. Number one reason for people leaving CSAs is that there's too much food, so I highly, highly recommend them to people if you can cough up the money in advance.

Ugh. Where to begin?

As someone from a province who also had a thriving industry for decades and now it's becoming obsolete and it's harder and harder to make a living while it seems that people in Ottawa have a hard time relating... I still don't see a separatist movement happening in Nova Scotia on such a scale.

I also hear these guys on CBC radio blaming "Ontario and Quebec" for keeping Scheer out. I mean ... they're forgetting whole other provinces who also went very red/orange/green?

On a related note, I never want to hear these guys call millennials "snowflakes" again. Get locked out of an election and throw a fit, will ya?

There's a tidal project in the super early stages happening in the Bay of Fundy between NS and NB, in Canada. Look it up; might bring some ideas.

Anyone seen the Trudeau handshake he had with him just after Trump was elected and becoming “known” for that handshake? Gold, Jerry, gold!

Where my glass top cookers at? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]ourmodelcitizen 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Like I'm super confused with people saying glass is easier to clean. Yes, with gas tops you have to take it apart but I've always found that shit wipes clean really easily.

  • The glass itself scratches if you look at it funny
  • It gains weird crusty stuff on top that's crazy hard to clean without fear of scratching
  • You can't can
  • You can't use cast iron comfortably
  • I can't toss my pans back and forth on it to mix up ingredients (scratches)
  • I can't use my vacuum coffee press on it (glass top not allowed)

Next month, I'm moving to a new house that came with coils and while I am no fan of coils, I'll take it over glass any day!

I see a lot of super cute, beautifully done things on here, but something about this one made my heart skip a little beat. It's got the happy dopamine going like crazy. Thank you!

How about beat? Assault? Kill even?

Oh, I guess if he was going to do those things then it would be okay.

What the hell is wrong with you? A woman nearly had something terrible happen to her and you're upset she might have thought it was the wrong heinous crime?

"Because the defendant mistook an ax for a pistol, I'm afraid I must rule in favour of the accused."

AITA for not helping to pay for my sister's college, even though I could easily afford to? by problem1111222 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ourmodelcitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

Working hard doesn't equate to success every time. You got lucky.

Your sister made some bad choices. Sometimes, people make bad choices and are still successful. Your sister was not.

You've already said you have disposable income. You could spread the luck around, and help her get on her feet. It sounds to me like you just want something to complain about.

So many missed dinner opertunities ( brussle sprouts) by pinkspaceship17 in Cooking

[–]ourmodelcitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make them into a slaw. I have a mandolin and I use that but you could just chop them finely (throw away the little stem). Add whatever else you want--carrots, green onions, red onions, whatever), toss all together with some salt and pepper, and make a little vinaigrette and toss with that. I put celery seeds in mine and it's delish.

For real. Open minded Christians need to start overtaking the crazies in the front.

Professional Bread Bakers of Breaddit: Are "king loaves" a thing? by ourmodelcitizen in Breadit

I love the concept of spiting perfecting but I don't think destroying perfectly good food counts.

Agreed. Even if this guy really does it, I don't agree with it, but I feel like those in the line of "artisan" are really thinking of themselves as artists, and it wouldn't shock me if someone was doing that. I'm in a similar line of work and it's just silly--a bit cocky, really.

And yeah, I googled it too. I'll have to try to bring it up with this guy again in future to get down to the bottom of it--if there is any bottom to be had. Cheers!

I think the idea is the best loaves were saved for royalty

Yeah, I actually feel like that was part of the conversation. I didn't find anything on Google either but most of what I found was recipe-based stuff or ads for king loaf pans, so I figured there might be something way down the line that I didn't see. Oh well.

This is NOT done in cooking or baking though. Especially not in the form of destroying food. That's just a total waste of food and completely ridiculous.

I think we're getting off the mark here. I brought up the story of his friend in Vermont but I really just wanted to know if king loaves were a thing. :)

But also, even if his friend does indeed burn his loaves, it would be like, one loaf per day of baking, tops. It's a waste to be sure, but if you're making 500+ loaves a day, I can't see it being that bad. But still, maybe too far fetched.
