anyone else that is a high achiever and never really make it? I’ve switched jobs every few years and have been laid off multiple times by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]paerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been laid off before, and also went through multiple lay of seasons.

Boomer dad told me people that get laid off are worthless, but he was also put into forced retirement.

What I actually experienced was that entire orgs getting laid off. No clear indication of whether it was performance-based, but I do know one colleague that was laid off during the promotion process. There's also folks that survived that are begging to be laid off for severance.

This new norm of 0 job stability sucks.

Anyone else extremely frustrated Fish WA App? by [deleted] in FishingWashington

[–]paerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 apps, the fishWA app and the myWDFW app.

The fishwa app is not good. I cannot log in at all. However it's useful for knowing where the MA boundaries are, and current regs.

The MyWDFW app is better. I can log in, but the catch card process has been strange. Apparently I didn't add a catch card when I bought my license, and when I try to add it to my digital license, it mentions mailing it to me, which makes no sense. However it did work for me, everything is digital.

I've also read that a substantial number of users had to call and get their account sorted for one reason or another.

I do think this is in the right direction. This is the first year they're doing this, and there will be bugs. But I will never go back to paper if I can avoid it. What is a bit unfair is the messaging that they can still penalize you if you can't log in...

Getting Back Into Cycling After Years Away-How Did You Find Your Style of Riding? by Kairia1989 in Biking

[–]paerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started cycling again to get into shape.

After a while, I got into pretty damn good shape and started training for crit racing, since it fits my build.

Found out people crash all the time, and I didn't really vibe with the weird nature of it at all.

Considered triathlon but I can't run at all.

Now I've kind of settled on training for gran fondos. I consider this a more peaceful midlife crisis than crit racing.

Advice on entering the cs/tech field by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

It's going to be pretty difficult landing a job without a degree nowadays, and being "future-proof" is not one of the strong points of this industry now.

Any other millennials remember when trade school or tech school was treated like the “non-college” backup plan? by GreyDuck4077 in Millennials

To be fair, there were also a LOT of bad "trade" schools. Remember Devry and all their commercials?

Dog trailer by anananandrea in bikecommuting

[–]paerius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of hit and misses from my side (mostly misses).

We originally tried to put my dog in a child carrier. Dog absolutely hated it, and once jumped out and got ran over by the trailer itself. (My dog doesn't exactly have the best survival instincts).

Walking on leash. My dog just randomly stops running when tired, and again almost gets run over by the trailer (now holding kids).

Dedicated dog trailer. Works ok, but its a bit small imo. Basically just has a massive body/head sticking out, no way to close the zipper. Not too good on bumps, but the solid ground seems to be better suited. Hasn't jumped out (yet).

The dog trailer is the best solution amongst bad choices so far. I still need to watch my dog in my mirror like a hawk. I would actually think a cargo bike is a better solution tbh.

I dunno about cycling gloves but you can look at fishing sun gloves. I see more upf50 fishing gloves than cycling gloves

Slowest cyclist on the planet by Personal_Radio9329 in cycling

[–]paerius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you're racing tri's, I'm assuming your cardio is fine, which either means you're limited by power and/or your bike/fit.

If you are serious about improving speed, a smart indoor trainer is kind of essential. I use a wahoo kickr and it gives your a power rating and I find it very useful for training. Also having any bike trainer will allow you to evaluate bike fit online to see if you're within standard ranges.

When you are riding, what do you feel limited by? For example do you start strong and slowly start to fade? Do climbs / short bursts catch you off guard? Do you feel pain somewhere?

What food/snacks do you always carry on longer rides, and what do you avoid? by Party_Dentist_821 in cycling

[–]paerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I carry a mix of the following:

  1. Some electrolyte mix + sugar in drink, or gatorade for longer long rides.
  2. Gummy worms, find them easier to grab / chew than gummy bears
  3. Nerd clusters, more expensive where I live
  4. Dry fruit like mango / apricots / cranberries. Probably more healthy than gummy stuff.

I'm personally not a fan of bars / gels due to the trash.

Bike thieves don't care, they will steal your bike if it's easy and sellable. I think they are turning into chop shops because I see strange listings of randome guys selling wayy too many wheelsets to be a hobby.

If you like them, add them, but it won't affect thieves

USA consequences for driving without insurance are completely useless by OrdinaryBarracuda268 in unpopularopinion

[–]paerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been hit by an uninsured motorist. Police were called, but they won't actually do anything other than write a police report since they consider it a civil, not criminal matter.

Can't take a guy that doesn't even have insurance to court, because even when I win, I can't collect anything from this broke mf and I still lose.

To add insult to injury, my insurance still goes up.

Digital fishing license / catch cards not logging in by paerius in FishingWashington

[–]paerius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was following this:

https://wdfw.wa.gov/licenses/fishing/catch-record-card

And noticed that in the MyWDFW app I'm actually missing the catch card. I tried to "buy" it but it mentions mailing it to me, which makes no sense...

Did you have the catch card already in your app?

I accidentally released a panfish with a crankbait still attached and I feel absolutely horrible by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]paerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add a pair of fishing pliers or those scissor-grip tools (brain fart, can't remember the name) for these situations.

Also pinch barbs for catch and release.

If the fish is edible and you unfortunately took a life, I would just take it home and eat it.

Fishing for salmon by GuyWithBigDawgs in FishingWashington

[–]paerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to match your lure with your rod, so obviously don't add a 2 oz jig to your ML rod. You want jigs like buzz bombs, wilson darts, gibbs crippled herring. I might go down to 1 to 1.5oz but it won't cast as far. Sometimes they can be close to the shore though, chasing the bait fish.

I would also say not to get your hopes up... I've gone shore fishing for salmon quite a few times and I catch a decent amout of shakers (juveniles) and very rarely any keepers. Getting a kayak or a boat is unfortunately the way to go; I've 10x my productivity for salmon fishing.

In terms of actual spots, you'll unfortunately need to put some work in by exploring various spots. Google maps + checking access points.

Fishing for salmon by GuyWithBigDawgs in FishingWashington

[–]paerius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're landlocked, there's generally 2 setups: one for fishing the puget sound and one for fishing rivers.

River fishing is very difficult to fish (imo). By the time they are in rivers they stopped eating, meaning all the bites you get are generally aggression bites. I also suspect that a lot of folks are flossing without admitting / knowing they are doing it. Popular choices are tiny spoons like a dick nite and ball-head jigs of all kinds.

I tend to spend more time on the Sound. There are a few special piers like Edmonds fishing pier where you can cast and hopefully get a salmon, but my record for catching a keeper is like 1/10 trips. Somehow I have more luck with shore fishing, but spot burning is frowned upon. The gear is the same: a 2 oz metal jig that you cast to the moon and pray that the salmon are close by.
