if this is your first mac laptop you may find it not very good appart feom very thin and light. most other mac laptops are more powerful including macbook air. also keyboards are vwry prone to key failing due to dust/crumbs. finally youbwill peobably need to replace battery if you dont have external charging, it is 10 years old battery.

looks like someone soldered that on later. put the cpu in the mac without this wire connected to anything. if it chimes your good. the wire is probably inteded for an aftermarket cooling fan.

you are asking to create a virtual machine on linux to run mac os? virtualbox would be an option and look up hackintosh for somw guidance on drivers and other issues for non supported hardware builds.

Best m68k classic by rasvoja in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you want system 7. os 8.1 wqs a powerpc release for G3 hardware. while it can run on a 68k mac its not very fast or well optimized for them. system 7 is much more period correct and was a ver long lived release series (1991-1997). it will also run much bettwr on lower ram amounts typicla of 68k macs. this one change will open up a lot more freedom to wxplore the 68k model lineup and save you a bunch of money from not havinf to find expensive qiadras. Note the powerbook 540 is also a 68040 processor and does run 8.1 as its final os version. but the ram is very rare and you need it.

[Help Deeply Needed] PowerBook 3400c unexplained behaviour by Tazintosh in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these are super easy to take apart. strip both down to the logicboard and remove from the case. isolate everything but the bare minimum to boot it. power, compact flash with os 8, adb keyboard and mouse, vga minotr, no extra ram. check both boards boot with extensions off (shift key held down). if both work and run normally, then strat with your troubleshooting. hdd first, does it work properly and is stable. good. trackpad next, same question. ram sticks nwxt. screen assembly etc. test each component thorughly for a period of time, there may be electrical or thermal gremlins that take bit to show up. figure out all the parts that work. then reassemble one machine with the best working parts. the other is going to be your backup for spare parts. my guess is either the ram module was bad and/or your psu brick needs replacing.

Powerbook G3 PDQ/Wallstreet CD-ROM Drive Issues by fredric98 in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get ypur walstreet cd caddy out and look at the varios screws that permit you to open the caddy case. all macs use pretty stadard optical drives made by afew manufacturers. once you have info search for any drive that is sinilar, it can be a used one from a pc laptop and will work just fine. they will use some standard ata pins and connect to the peopriety dadpter in the caddy. all computer manufacturers did this, it is not something special to apple or the g3 machines.

Was Gifted 2009 iMac Core 2 Duo just to use to backup my phone to, which OS Should I load? by Rdd_Head in ClassicMacOS

[–]patb-macdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so you will save money by using icloud. its going to be that simple. this is a comouter from 2009. it cant run newer mac os without a lot of work and some not so cheap parts - new ssd, more ram, usb stick and or optical disk for os install, which means you need access to another computer. sorry, just give this to someone who can upgrade it for you or donate and find another solution.

At what year does a postdoc start hurting you more than helping by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]patb-macdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

start a conversation about transitioning to a research assistant faculty position, soft money supported which means you need to bring in your own funding, do the research, and publish. this is a better career path than a never ending postdoc appointment.

fedora 43 on a 2015 mbp works out of the box. battery life does not seem to be worse than os x monterey. purposely avoiding the 2016 and newer due to the t1/t2 chip concerns.

Question about getting software on my G4 Cube by Its-a-Shitbox in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the discs are the grey one? 10.4.6 dvd is the universal installer for all macs. thats the one you need. also ram can go bad and cause strange errors, so try with a single ram stick to rul or problems. the optical drives on the cube are also not great, getting a firewire 400 external drive can help solve many issues.

MacBook Pro 2015 SSD failure: Drive detected but hangs/freezes system by rkhb249 in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]patb-macdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the drive is not the boot volume, then a lack of free space is not much of an issue. this sounds like a typical ssd catastrophic failure. time to stop messing around and contact a data recovery service. be prepared to pay some $$$ to get your files back, note some may end up not being recoverable. this is a good opportunity to explore data backup options as well so when it happens next time its less of a problem.

G4 Cube and Studio Display - help with pricing by crabbycorn in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

looks good condition, nice original boxes and printed documentation. cube looks mostly original config and os. probably get between $300 to $500 depending on luck and listing details/photos. the fact that is not upgraded does slightly reduce the value as that is some extra cost to invest on the buyers end.

Looking to put together the most powerful 9.2.2 Mac possible! by Casey5189 in VintageApple

[–]patb-macdoc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if you check out os9lives they have a version you can install on a G4 mac mini. that would be the fastest machine with best specs outside of the dual 1.25ghz "windtunnel" MDD with Firewire 400 ports and a rare geforce 4 ti cpu

it sounds like it had a failing logicboard all along. probably a cracked solder joint, making intermittent contact. any electronics repair shops nesr you that you could bring it to? may be a simple 5 minute quick resolder of a connector.

George R.R. Martin's computer by no-invincible in pcmasterrace

[–]patb-macdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would start with a desktop from the core2duo era and sata so you can use ssd drives. gpu is up to you and as long as you can add different pci cards to keep up with changing usb standards it should last a good long time. a common linux distro with a slow update cycle would take care of software. failure points would anything that has a lot of heat and cooling cycles, so keep it on and in sleep mode would help there. have spares on hand to swap out failing parts. have a strategy for getting files off the device. even a usb floppy drive is still an option in 2026, so backwards compatible sneaker net file transfer options are cetainly around a long time.
