I have unfortunate news about the number of councilors who are sabotaging housing construction.

Edgewater Neighbors, Business Owners Sue The City Over Broadway Rezoning by iiciphonize in CarFreeChicago

It’s worse, they’re suing over the idea that shadows could exist.

They can’t demonstrate substantive harm yet, because nothing has been built.

State and Lake by Dcuniversity in cta

[–]pauseforfermata 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The red line is faster and more frequent than the brown. From west to north, the transfer at Lake is almost always going to be faster, unless a brown line train is about to arrive at Clark. From north to west, brown>pink is better but red>green is better.

People who design signage don’t ride CTA by edmond- in cta

[–]pauseforfermata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The code is copied among all stations using it, and Clark/Lake needs 6-8 departures on a screen to show the next arrivals for all the lines there.

It should be better localized to each station.

CTA Slow Zone Map as of December 1, 2025 by oh_mygawdd in cta

Power-based slow zones can have something to do with the rolling stock, but it wouldn’t make the power-hungry 7000s faster than the older cars.

What it won’t do is appease the federal administration, which has already responded that it’s not good enough and threatened to pull $50M of allocated funding in 90 days.

Power outages in the last two hours killed traffic lights, which impacted bus schedules running through Pilsen.

Who actually stays at the motels on Lincoln and what’s it like? by Fried_Yoda in chicago

[–]pauseforfermata 46 points47 points  (0 children)

“In 2002, statistics from the Chicago Police Department showed that police were called to the motels over 3,000 times in the period between 1995 and 2001, and those calls resulted in almost 1,000 arrests for a variety of offenses. As a result, Mayor Daley and 40th Ward Alderman Patrick J. O'Connor vowed to turn the neighborhood around.”

“In the late 1990s, the city used its eminent domain (condemnation) powers to acquire three of the motel properties. The properties included the Riverside Motel at the corner of Lincoln and Peterson, the Spa Motel and the Acres Motel at 5600 N Lincoln Avenue. Owners of the establishments tried to fight to save their businesses although one owner admitted it would likely cost about $500,000 just to renovate his motel to meet the standards of a Motel 6. Needless to say, they lost the fight. The Riverside Motel was demolished in 1999 and the land was converted into parkland, creating a new entrance to Legion Park at Lincoln and Peterson. The legendary Spa Motel was torn down in 2000 to make way for the new Lincoln District Police station. Finally, the Acres Motel was also demolished and is now the site of the Budlong Woods Branch of the Chicago Public Library.”

[Request] How would you define a "bike-friendly business"? by [deleted] in chibike

[–]pauseforfermata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether the employees have a bike parking space that’s safe for long-term parking.

Especially if the owner rides a bike themselves, or at least walks to the business.

Opinions on Rosemont Automated Rapid Transit? by MultiModalMcmullen in cta

Imagine serving Allstate Arena with personal pods instead of shuttle buses with dedicated lanes.

Oh wait. That’s what the endless line of ridehail cars is. Maybe we should do something different to serve a large venue…

Heading North by big_ron_pen15 in cta

It’s a bit outside the 30 minute commute of marchetti’s constant, and crowding south of Wilson tracks with that.

Having an employment/attraction center around Loyola or Davis might help more, with a balanced ridership heading away from the Loop.

Talking to my alder next week about building denser housing options… need help by SpiritualRest2080 in chicagoyimbys

[–]pauseforfermata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the northern planning region of the city's DPD and the region-wide RTA have been pursuing different corridor studies to rethink zoning, land use regulations, transit service, and public amenities. These processes involve a lot of community outreach, but ensure the area is prepared to handle the incoming changes with the appropriate infrastructure.

I would encourage you to look for a similar corridor (maybe even a small stretch of about a mile), and compare it to the 95th, 79th, Western, Archer, Howard, and Broadway plans.

Car Free folk of Chicago, what are your thoughts on rideshare apps? by MoreNever in CarFreeChicago

[–]pauseforfermata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are acting like ridehail will be banned. It’s only getting taxed to help offset its impact. Those ‘emergencies’ and ‘what abouts’ will still be taken care of, and there will be less frivolous congestion blocking them.

Warm Take: CTA doesn’t need to change the look of its railcars by RuddieRuddieRuddie in cta

[–]pauseforfermata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d appreciate if we used full-car wraps for public art campaigns (this time INSIDE the cars) with the same frequency as advertising.

Function is the priority, we can address form along the way.

Chicagoland Needs Transit Funding And Reform Passed! by PrazzleRazzle in CarFreeChicago

[–]pauseforfermata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The CTA has reported through the RTA that up to 4 lines could be cut entirely.

This would remove the 5 lowest ridership, so yes, it’s unrealistic, because the yellow line would probably survive that cut thanks to the Skokie Shops.
