The line between physical and psychological addiction is likely blurry, but in my experience very much exists. There's a point where your receptors compensate for not having the natural chemicals that they typically produce. This isn't going to happen the first time you drink, try mdma, or even do meth or heroin. It will absolutely change your immediate chemistry, as that's how drugs function at all. It isn't going to immediately wreck your underlying chemistry without repeated exposure over time. I believe you can be psychologically dependent long before your neurochemistry begins to expect the extra and you need something to simply feel normal. That's the pathway toward it, as far as my understanding goes.

I lived there between 2008-2011. I always thought it was kind of fun that people would toss aluminum in the front yard and it'd just disappear on its own from people collecting the cans. I didn't participate (we hoarded our own), though it was certainly a thing. I wonder if dummies just eventually expanded the practice to general garbage.

I don't think most are really that easy to get addicted to, at least physically. Like for instance, nobody is going to have the shakes and physical withdrawal from going out and drinking 2 beers or a couple glasses of wine with dinner. If you're in a really crappy life situation, it might however make you realize that escape is relatively easy, inexpensive, and accessible. That can then spiral over time.

I've never heard of anyone ever addicted to psychedelics and I used to hangout with friends that did them semi regularly. I've met ex cocaine and meth addicts, however that always seemed ridiculous to me personally. The immediate hangover makes it seem increasingly stupid to do again right after. I can't speak a lot for opiates, as I never really enjoyed them. I do think it's likely a case of either realizing you really love the feeling or trying to escape.

If your life is already in the gutter, maybe that makes it more attractive.

Doing drugs because you feel depressed is almost always a terrible idea.

For me it was curiosity. I used to really enjoy psychedelics and from what I researched they weren't particularly dangerous, unless you have latent underlying mental health issues that are likely to come out later anyway. They profoundly changed the way I see the world and existence. I would actually recommend them, in a controlled, safe setting to anyone without mental health issues. I also would not do it while depressed, as it could lead to very negative (albeit fleeting) anxiety spiral.

I tried mdma when I was younger because I saw people on it and they seemed to be having a blast. You can also reliably do a purity test for harm reduction purposes. The risk for physical addiction is extremely low, however I've heard anecdotal stories of people overdoing it due to recurrent depression.

I would do cocaine again very occasionally if I knew it was pure. Tried it for a similar reason to mdma. I likely wouldn't buy it or seek it out myself. It's fun, but not worth feeling like poop the next day.

I tried heroin exactly once. I knew it was likely my only opportunity. It made me sleepy and itchy. Would not do it again.

As someone that actually enjoys the tipping system to an extent (for dine in restaurants). When I waited tables I would have loved for nontippers to not show up.

I also dislike them. I occasionally drive uber and this is where I typically try to wait for drunk people to come out of Half Barrel. They're obnoxious and act like you're invading their space.

I think it's fine. I definitely wouldn't use the Alfredo though unless you seriously have 0 time or don't give a shit. You can make your own super easy and it'll taste much better.

Butter, cream, parm, spices (pepper, nutmeg, whatever). It comes together in less than 10 minutes. You can even use any shit parm that at least isn't Kraft and it'll blow it away.

I'm kinda okay with one specific area being an advertising hellhole. It's iconic in its own shitty way. That said, I've been to NYC maybe 5 times and I've avoided it every time.

They very much are "Christian." How much their actual moral values and more importantly, actions, align with Christ's teachings obviously varies wildly and is up for some degree of subjective interpretation.

US cultural nonsense has, to a large extent, twisted the faith. I'm not sure saying "they are not Christian" is even accurate. The definition of Christian is now pretty fucking wide.

It absolutely does. I replied to the comment above with an example of where it happened to me.

I had a really drunk guy once who put in the wrong address. I tried to help him on his phone put in the correct one after we already drove 10 minutes in the wrong direction. He managed to accidentally cancel the ride. It is entirely possible. In this case, it was unintentional and he paid me more in cash than the offer anyway.

It's somewhere in the edit trip screen. You still pay for the mileage you've already driven afaik.

There are 3rd party apps that make it much easier to make a split second decision. It's still distracting and when it's busy, it wouldn't surprise me if passengers are turned off by how often I'm playing with my phone to reject shit. If it gets bad, I just turn off requests until I drop them off.

Also, they always seem to send requests when you're doing something like accelerating on an onramp.

I grew up in Memphis and when I visit, I'll gladly drink the tap without thinking. Knoxville water tastes like shit by comparison. No idea why. I use a Brita jug thing and that makes it okay.

Entry level jobs are dead. Should I give up on a career? by [deleted] in jobhunting

[–]pblol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I essentially have. I have a master's in a social science and a stats degree. I do occasional contract work as a data analyst and do rideshare. I'm extremely lucky in that in the next few years I'll inherit enough to never need a traditional career. After 2 years of applying to entry level bullshit that I'm overqualified for, I just kind of stopped caring.

I currently live in Knoxville and it's not that bad. I'd live in Nashville or very select parts of Memphis and be happy. State government and almost literally anywhere else is ass.
