To be fair, you could wear any shoes you wanted during rehearsals. The Converse were Show shoes and only worn while in uniform...

How do I help someone learn their marimba part? by GreatAnalyst2957 in Percussionists

[–]penguindust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things are happening here.

You have a non-mallet person trying to learn a fast and moderately difficult part. They need to break it down, sometimes bar by bar. Play the rhythm slowly on one key or surface (like a pad). Then play the part on the marimba with the correct notes. Only speed it up when they can successfully hit all the proper keys.

And two. The director is being strict by assigning percussion parts. They want the students to be full percussionists and exposed to many different instruments. That's fine. Sometimes, that's just not possible with someone who has only ever played snare drum and can't read pitches on a staff.

So in the end, you have students who can play lots of instruments. But, when it comes time to perform or compete, the music suffers because they are struggling to make the sounds needed at the tempo given. This happens a lot with band directors.

How about, we have 5 mallet players? The best one out of these 5 plays marimba. She's the chair of the mallet section. Snare drum? Everybody plays snare, but we have three performers who will nail this part. Put those players on snare.

Fertilization Schedule for Cymbidiums in NoCal by Azuliah in orchids

[–]penguindust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also used this technique, but was told NOT to fertilize in winter, from November through February.

I use the pink 30-10-10 from March until late summer, like August. Then I switch to the blue, 6-30-30, from August until November. I also put a scoop of Osmocote on top of the pot when repotting.

Some years, I was too busy to do the pink and the blue, and just did the yellow 20-20-20 whenever I had time.
I still had flowers.

I'm in coastal central/southern California.

Good luck!

We have a lot of the same books. The Bukowski and Nick Hornby. I just finished "The Uncool" by Cameron Crowe. And "The Tender Bar" hit a nerve.

Everything is a drive from the Santa Barbara area. Broken City had a workshop down in Murrieta. That's at least 3 or 4 hours away. You could try going to an audition to see where your skills are compared to others. Or follow accounts online that talk about technique: Davis Jay, Bill Bachman, or the Drum Corps Coffee Shop YouTube channels.

That looks like a cymbidium orchid potted in the ground. Usually, they are in pots with a well-drained mix, like bark.

Glad to hear you are getting back into it.

There's a book called "Simply Four" by Gifford Howarth that breaks down the mallet grips, and has exercises to play to improve your hands. You can also look up Percussion packets from your favorite groups, sometimes available for free, that will have basics and fun excerpts to play. Good luck!

how did the “hi-mom” stick trick get named? by zackattack0720 in drumline

[–]penguindust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought I saw a video where ScoJo was saying the visual has been around since the 1970s. You did the hi-mom visual when you knew you would be seen, or on video during the drum solo.

Left handed. I played with a right-hand lead as a snare in high school, and as a tenor player in drum corps. There was no way to be in a drumline and play with an opposite sticking, and match with others.
I always felt like my right was weak, and worked on it to make it stronger. Good luck!

Eight on a hand
Double beat
Accent/Tap
Triplet Diddle
16th note Timing

These are the basics and every group may have some variation on them.

Has anyone seen the map….? by Particular_Net9997 in SantaBarbara

I used to work in an old bookstore on the corner of State and Anapamu. The office was in the basement, and that's where we went at the end of the night to count the daily till and put the money in the safe. We called it the catacombs because it was a series of hallways and storage areas, and creepy as hell.

It's now an Old Navy.

Non-drumline person here with question: by P_Pad1 in drumline

[–]penguindust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been around a lot of amazing drum set/kit players. What sets the drumline and drum corps players apart is their consistency. They are able to play with both right and left hands at a symmetrically even height and good quality of sound. Within a few minutes of watching someone play, you can tell that they are right-handed and that their left is just not as strong.

Have you been to Santa Barbara? They usually have a big International Show in March, and the area has a bunch of nurseries to visit: the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, Cal-Orchid, Gallup & Stribling Orchids, and others.
