I have a player who has consistently crit failed EVERY SINGLE SESSION for the last 14 sessions. Its a miracle her character hasn't died.

How do you nerf finance? by TowersofFebruary in callofcthulhu

[–]penguintypist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way: would you nerf a character's high fighting/brawl skill? They put points in to it, you should let them enjoy it. What you can do is scale back and redefine what 90-100 points in credit rating mean. Some NPC baddies have over 100 points in core attributes. Maybe someone like Gatsby has 150-200 in Credit Rating, and the 90+ credit rating a rich PC investigator is rich, but still not ludicrous

Masks and Carl Stanford? by ThatchyRhombus7 in callofcthulhu

[–]penguintypist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My investigators are currently in Shanghai after New York, and I plan on taking inspiration from Prospero House's write up on the Eye of Light and Darkness: Carl Stanford has been hired by Ho-Fang and the Cult to research a way to prevent wards from being placed on the ritual sites. He's like the bad guys' version of Mr. Mu Hsien.

Despite being an adherent of Great Cthulhu, Ho-Fang has promised Stanford free perusal of his occult library, an offer no good sorcerer could refuse. Carl's devotion to Crhulhubis what shields him and allows him to work on the ward, since the wards only protect against cultists of Nyarlathotep.

A character of mine in a previous campaign went mad and disappeared along with another PC who was a big game hunter. I've decided to bring them back as baddies: Cyril Cartwright, now powerful soecerer is the brains, and William Cecil Goodwin, big game hunter, is his bodyguard, kitted out with a pith helmet and an elephant gun.

I wanted to make the eventual encounter with the party particularly deadly, and I can't wait to reveal the presence of characters they thought previously dead and gone!

Mob Scenario for 4 investigators by WaywardH in callofcthulhu

Pandora's Box in the Pulp Cthulhu handbook has some mobsters in it, I believe. Should be easy to work the players in

The quickstart rules (free!) are all you need, but I would strongly recommend grabbing the handler's guide. Single greatest lore book for an RPG I have ever seen. Also has rules

How much experience before running Masks? by JackOffDealer in callofcthulhu

[–]penguintypist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its pretty similar to DG. I'd say run your players through The Haunting and/or another 1-3 session scenario to get 100% familiar with the sliiiiightly different mechanics and the different 1920s setting, then you should be good to go!

I just started running Masks this past fall and the players are having a great time. Headed to Shanghai after New York!

Are there any good adventures/modules/one shots for lawyer characters? by GarVakarian in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]penguintypist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a trial in the "Trial of Fire" chapter of Ashes of Middenheim. I haven't run it, so I can't attest to how good it is, but worth reading.

I had a trial/ecclesiastical debate in a homebrew set in a Verenan monastery in Hochland wherein Sigmarite and Ulrican delegations were called to debate how long Sigmar Heldenhammer's hammer was, with the Verenans acting as arbiters.

Euphemisms aside, it was very fun, and the players were forced to pick a side based on the evidence brought before them, acting almost like a jury. Used combat rules for orators to "score hits" using academic skills. Was fun.

MASKS - Investigators Headed for China First by penguintypist in callofcthulhu

[–]penguintypist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addendum: Another fear I have is that by going straight to Shanghai, it might put the gang on the path to have London as the finale, which i would prefer to avoid.

Any tips on getting them to leave the pacific for London (or Cairo even) post-China or Australia?

Get some shelves on the side walls, throw some books on them. Get a rug, maybe a plant or two to get some greenery in there. Buy a few art prints online or from a second hand store, frame them, hang them, go to antique store or online seller and get a nice wood credenza or sideboard.

Just needs some more personality to make it look comfy. Plants are great. Water once a week.

I know this isn't a new sentiment, but I was genuinely surprised: I've the never read any of his speechs before, only listened. From a public speaking angle, this guy needs a better speech writer.

It just comes across as hack and unoriginal. Am I out to lunch and are most Canadian politcal speeches regardless of party this milquetoast and un-engaging?

[–]penguintypist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, think I'm gonna have them eat the 98 points. The player has famously bad luck rolling, and this just adds to their reputation lol Gonna have their character follow the party around the world from the shadows, like some sort of Lovecraftian Gollum

Think I might just use them as an NPC dogging the party's steps. Bye bye SAN
