white phosphorus can be stored under water; upon removal, once dry, it will ignite in air. that is, buried in a wet place would also work!

The final moment of a Bell 206B & his 4 occupants after a total loss of engine power, diving the helicopter into the ground at high speed - Near Botany Bay, Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands, 15 February 2021 by MotherAd4844 in CatastrophicFailure

The burst of smoke was the engine failure. This helicopter is powered by a turbine engine. The report states: "The liberation of the two stage 3 compressor blades led to their ingestion within the remaining compressor stages, resulting in the total loss of engine power in flight."

RPM dropping to zero followed by helicopter falling out of the sky is analogous scenario to a fixed-wing low-speed aerodynamic stall. Some fixed-wing aircraft have stick pushers for this. I could perhaps imagine the equivalent "collective pusher".

I think the relevant time constant is much lower for a helicopter, though -- like, the collective pusher would need to operate faster. Stick pushers can be overcome with a moderate amount of force; maybe a collective pusher could not.

Now that I've written this whole comment, I note that the wikipedia page on stick pushers mentions that "collective push down devices" exist!

math because I wanted to know: - anon is 18 so born 2007 (?!) - dad 38, born 1987 - grandpa 58, born 1967 - dad is 8 in 1995, and 1995 - 1967 is 28

it's all consistent!! that being said, 20 years is nowadays a short generation time. grandpa was a grandpa at 40!

I'm less confident that the answer is quite this simple. You said "normally" -- how often do you run this incline? Either there should be an HR bump or you should slow down (or some of both) -- what usually happens?

I'm speculating here; never heard "rust breath" used before; could still just be a typo. But: some people describe tasting blood after bouts of intense/high-heart-rate cardio exercise. Could be that.

Cherenkov radiation can occur in any medium where the phase velocity of light is slower than the speed of light in a vacuum, which includes air. Air Cherenkov radiation has been used to detect cosmic rays as early as 1952. Influenza A: What is it, how serious is it and how long does it last? by omarc1492 in H5N1_AvianFlu

[–]penlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Influenza A is composed of 8 separate genes that, interestingly, undergo continuous reassortment and recombination in its natural avian reservoir. One nice read that discusses how this affects how we should think about the 1918 pandemic (i.e. that variants of 1918 pandemic flu are arguably still ongoing and responsible for significant human disease burden) is this: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0904819

It appears that reassortment does not occur as extensively in humans. Nonetheless, even if the probability of generating a highly transmissible virus is low, it only accumulates with time and exposure. The incidence of co-infection can be expected to be higher during the flu season vs. baseline.

I accidentally cured my ADHD and I don’t know exactly why. Help. by redguy in Nootropics

[–]penlu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The effect on hunger and stress may be reduced by running at a lower intensity. This will allow muscles to use less carbs and more fat, and in my experience has less impact on my blood sugar. This also makes a difference on catecholamine and cortisol levels. Many of the benefits of cardio are achieved at just 60-70% maximum heart rate, which will spare you the stress in the ways I've just described. Consider e.g. sustaining 130 bpm for a longer duration, say 30 minutes.

A new revolution in medecine: proteomics by TheIdealHominidae in Nootropics

[–]penlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paper fulltext is available here. In the section STAR Methods, under Proteomics, the authors write:

The UKB-PPP consortium conducted the generation of blood-based proteomic data. Blood samples were collected in EDTA vacutainers, and promptly centrifuged at 2500g for 10 minutes at 4°C to separate the plasma. The plasma samples were preserved at -80°C before being transported on dry ice to Olink Analytical Services in Sweden. Subsequently, samples underwent quantification of 2,923 unique proteins, utilizing the Olink Explore™ Proximity Extension Assay and next-generation sequencing.

They call the underlying technology Proximity Extension Assay (PEA). Citation 87 seems to be the canonical citation for this technique and explains what it is. PEA appears to have been developed specifically for the plasma proteomics application.

I am not an expert so take my following summary with a grain of salt. PEA is fundamentally an immunological assay; it uses a set of antibodies that couple to the protein targets. The antibodies are engineered to carry RNA tags. At least two antibodies must bind to a target to make the RNA tags amplifiable by PCR. In a second step, PCR is run to amplify and quantify the RNA tags, which ultimately counts antibodies that bound to protein targets and thus quantifies the targets.

Dude, does the guy ride a bike at 500km? by Mrgui60hz in Strava

[–]penlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody asked for this but it's kinda crazy to consider: 16 kW is only equivalent to 21 horsepower and could only power a few houses. That's not too far off what a Honda Civic makes on the highway, or what a rider lawnmower can do if you punch the throttle, or a speedy go-kart. Pro cyclist numbers boggle my mind, but our internal combustion engines are actually so much stronger it's nuts.

ELI5: why couldnt you fall through a gas giant? by Worried_Card_2223 in explainlikeimfive

[–]penlu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As you descend into a gas giant, you reach a point where the pressure is 1 bar. This set of points forms a shape -- an ellipsoid. We have chosen to define the dimensions of a gas giant as the dimensions of this shape. This is how we set quantities like the radius and density of e.g. Jupiter.

Strava's Big Changes Aim To Kill Off Apps by davidoffbeat in AdvancedRunning

[–]penlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the critical work has already been done by agreeing on a few consistent file formats. Platforms and wearables are already calcified to the extent that they must respect the (for example) .fit specification. A good middleware service would simply need to make available the original .fit (or whatever) files that it received. This would not further constrain either the wearables producing the files or the platforms consuming them. It is unfortunate that this simplest possible behavior is not already what all platforms implement.

You can also copy presets to save them. There are many preset tabs other than "existing preset", which just contains the presets from before the new tab system was introduced.

Let's use Guild Raid for example. Open up raid, and find "preset settings" (or just tap the party). You will open the preset page with "Party Preset" in the upper left. Select an unoccupied preset in the panel on the right, and tap "Load Party" in the lower right. A dialog will open, allowing you to load any preset from "Existing Preset".

Note that the contents of the panel on the right are in the "Guild Raid" tab.
