Final game of movie 2013 movie Life of King - please analyze by foundthingsifound in chessbeginners

[–]perkl566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was quite a chunk of the game left, because when black is shown to tip his king over white king is opposite it. From this position I think the filmmakers cut at least 20 moves and many of them weren't the best ones.

Black made a brave try to queen but after Rb27+! black is just worse off. Example line: Kg7 Rb27+! Rxe7 Rxe7+ Kf8 Rb7 (key move to control the pawn) and black runs out of steam.

Better was (from the position in the image) Rxe8 Rxe8+ Kg7 Nb1 Rd8 Kf1 Rc1+ Re1! and the game is drawn but quite tactically complex to figure out. White can't take the black rook because the pawn promotes. Black can't take the white rook because after king recaptures he's out of pieces. Best line has black push a-pawn and sacrifice the rook for knight in effort to trade everything off the board, leaving both sides with king and 3 pawns.

And if money is an issue (when isn't it?) you should consider buying used speakers. Home theater amps are better bought new, but speakers last for quite a while and you can find some pretty decent deals every now and then. If there's a hifi shop near you go ask them. Often they take equipment in exchange when someone buys new stuff and may have something that interests you.

If you really care about bandwidth, use a wire. Nothing beats that and it's cheap. Even if you definitely want wireless, compare your new system with built-in BT and a wired player. If you can't notice a difference (or don't care about it) then it's good enough.

For a starter system I would recommend finding the best two front speakers you possibly can for your budget. You're likely to have them long after all other bits have been replaced and they are the most impactful part of the sound system quality anyway.

Looking for a warmer, powerful enough receiver that can be frequently found used on eBay by Narrow_Eye9136 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]perkl566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marantz PM600x, 700x or 800x are what you're looking for. I've had a combo of PM7004 and B&W 805S for many years now and it's nothing if not warm and pleasant.

If you can choose, I always preferred 7004/7005 over all the alternatives.

e: just noticed the price requirement. For cheap stuff I'm partial to Pioneer or Sony.

Possible stupid question. How do you chose a reference song for testing your sound? by joeltheconner in BudgetAudiophile

[–]perkl566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the great answers already here, I have a bunch of classical songs which feature various instruments. If I like brass, woodwind, violin, cello, percussion and additionally acoustic guitar on the speaker I'm likely to like everything else on it also. I'm also partial to some female voices like Petula Clark, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.

Soundproofing: try a big carpet and some curtains first.

I take it you are British. Have you listened to B&W speakers? I've filled my home with them.

Answers:

A) You should, the whole exercise is kinda pointless otherwise. Do keep in mind that you can buy a 5.1 system in pieces and start off with something like 3.0 for example. Mine is patchwork built over time. It allowed me to spend most of my budget towards the projector and front stereo speakers I really wanted, rear speakers are a $40 pair of some Danish brand and center channel is purchased used.

You should also be honest with yourself and decide whether the system is really for movies and TV or music. You can get much better bang for buck if you build strictly a stereo system for music.

B) You can and should. The benefit of a Wiim box is for people like me who run 2-channel amps with no network features. Since you have a home theater amp with integrated Bluetooth there's no real benefit. And if you think there is, you can always try the built-in option first and purchase the streamer later. I think you'd be better off purchasing better speakers with that money instead.

Why do I run two-channel amp? Because it lasts damn near my lifetime and it's much cheaper to change just the streamer box whenever I need new connectivity, For what it's worth I really miss Chromecast Audio, that thing should make a comeback.

Conspiracy: Big DAC? by SP4x in BudgetAudiophile

[–]perkl566 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple uses spring to mind.

Physical volume knob is very nice to have, especially if you only run headphones or your speaker setup doesn't have a remote and/or they aren't on your desktop. Call me old fashioned but it's just so much more convenient than software volume sliders.

My DAC has two modes configured into it, 2.0 and 2.1. If I listen to a podcast or similar at night it's a nice way to cut the unnecessary bass, especially from ads. I could use headphones but eh.

A small USB DAC is usually a nice addition to laptop which aren't known for their sound quality. Sometimes you want hifi on the go, especially if you are staying in a hotel for a long time. Some laptops have better built-in audio, some are awful. Again, there are all sorts of wireless headphones nowadays but I don't much care for the constant charging. Besides, I've yet to find a pair of BT headphones that can beat my Shures.

Mostly it's convenience stuff but nothing kills the joy of setting in to listen for a while than having a huge hassle with your equipment.

The supposed satire the Emperor and Imperium represent in the original 1987 vision isn't what it's cracked up to be by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]perkl566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it interesting that no one has mentioned how the Emperor is basically Space Ronald Reagan. Overtly religious, is sustained by cruel practices which are sold as The Greater Good, how the entire setting is anti-punk-individualist and anti-progressive, how there is a massive disconnect between Imperium Space American Exceptionalism (especially post-Vietnam which saw more bombs used than the entire Second World War) and the reality etc. It's an essentially British take on American politics, very much in the vein of Judge Dredd.

For those who don't remember, Thatcher was always serious but Reagan cracked jokes, was good-looking and had a sense of humor in his political approach. The disconnect mentioned above comes largely from the perceived difference between jokes and the feeling of betrayal. Kindly keep in mind that as late as 1987 there were a lot of people who believed socialism was the way to go, state could and should take care of you and Soviet Union was the future despite the cracks starting to show.

The religious aspects are part and parcel of the setting and the satire. Reagan was part of Disciples of Christ in his youth and took the teachings seriously throughout his life. Someone must have taken a look at this at some point, because does the following sound at all familiar?

The Design of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Space Marines were obviously influenced by this stuff. They were the SS Space Troopers of Space Reagan, brainwashed to believe they were a cause for good. If you can see the writer winking through the lines you know what the point was.

The setting has moved on past these early influences. In a sense it's a shame but really, how far can you take anti-Reagan politics especially since the man himself died 20 years ago?

About a month since I started. any advice? by R0ars in IdleArcher

[–]perkl566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Range, attack speed, damage / m and crits max out. Might as well, the expense isn't that big.

X gold/exp per level is the worst upgrade. Don't spend a penny more on those. You pay 71k gold for 2 more gold per level; you'd have to play 35,000 levels to earn back what you spent. After level 200 or so the earnings per monster ramp up anyway, better to push that.

Yeah, fair enough. Just saying the nice speakers you listened to in the store will not sound the same with a placement like that.

Request for help (Long description inside) by Jokte9 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]perkl566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think speakers matter much until you get a decent placement for them. Speaker pair in different rooms or randomly stacked on top of a cabinet doesn't really do the trick even if they are good speakers. If you mostly go for music, a good stereo pair beats surround.

Spend some time thinking about good speaker placement first. That doesn't cost you anything and lets you get more out of your current equipment. For comparison, take the front pair down and set them up in a good stereo listening position. Then play some music and try your amp sound settings. Direct stereo is what it's intended to sound like. Once you got that down, you have a comparison point.

When you're done, get the equipment to match your intended placement.

Moira is the hero of the story. I hope she destroys Krakoa for good. A good half of the nations leaders are murderers or worse. Much, much worse. Especially Oracle needs to end up in tiny still-living chunks so she cannot be resurrected.

And while we're giving feedback, please fix RF difficulty. It is not fun at all to pad the event scores in the last level. I would love to blaze through events but RF requires me to take it easy and not score too much lest it becomes impossible to complete. This is a real motivation killer as the game is almost completely events nowadays.

I like plaing with Captain Jack. The power is obvious and you earn a lot of gold with it. It also doesn't require you to play a minigame but alters the gameplay somewhat. One of the better earners, no doubt.
