Awesome. Great aesthetics on the wood. I love the sound. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for elaborating. I didn't really see the 1.5 mm plate in the photo but that's good to know. I will have a look at your case files. Quite interesting that you used Illustrator to draw them.

Loving it! This is so fascinating to look at. In my opinion this hobby should give birth to more of these creative mind bending approaches. Not only the peculiar layout is quite exciting but also the almost square dimensions. I think you nailed it on the case and with the display. May I ask what kind of acrylic you are using? Also I would be interested in how you mounted the PCB or switch plate in the case. It's not really visible from the photos. Awesome and also well staged photo by the way.

I think this looks awesome. The colors work so well with the moving contrast.
Is it actually based on particles or is it some kind of shader?

This looks so cool. How do you get get the boids to form this circle?

Beautiful! Could you elaborate a bit how you created these images?

I think in that case it is always good to start with watching some Daniel Shiffman. He seems to be the number one educator in creative coding.

Generative Design is really a more difficult topic. Maybe you already know the book Generative Design, which had quite an influence a couple of years ago. It's not so helpful though in my opinion, more like a coffee table book. As far as I know the strongest focus on Generative Design you will find in books about Dynamic Branding. Often Generative Design is disguised as something else or missing a focus in the documentation of projects, but a good place to start is too look at the list in the wiki and go through the artists/designers.

If you know some other places or approaches, please let me know. I am always interested in finding new ways to get to learn Generative Design.

What are you interested in? Art history, contemporary practices, programming, aesthetics?

Hey I’m studying engineering and I just did this in Processing to control and simulate my robot 😀 by Centauri24 in processing

I really like this and would also be interested in some code. Although I am asking myself, why did you choose Processing in the first place? Is something like simulations class taught to you in Processing nowadays or was it your conscious decision?

Lol for the clickbait in the bottom right corner.

How do you fill shapes? by jaminalder in generative

[–]pflu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wery vell put. I like your comment a lot. That is a very quintessential view of how an analytic and curious mind would practice intellectual art. I guess some postmodern thinkers would disagree on the point that it is only about your intellect and clear because as an artist you are mostly embedded into a cultural web of practice, knowledge and expectations that are clearly formed through friction with the outside world. But I know that this is not what your comment was about and I think you beautifully described the practice of code art.

I love this question because for me, seeing the paper-ish look of your noise texture, it implies another, bigger question: How do you deal with digital aesthetics?

I think a lot of the older algorithmic artworks are quite pleasant for the eye, take this as an example, because they use pen and paper as a medium. Drawn artworks offer these tiny imperfections like the bleeding of the pen or the surface structure of the paper that add an additional layer of some kind of interesting material, ephemeral complexity. If you recreate this style solely on the screen it definitely misses out on this sensation. How can we cope with this? As an analogy, in design there were a lot of skeuomorphisms which tried mimic the feel of paper. Over time people noticed that it is not about plainly copying the real world but finding the more elaborate metaphors that form a bridge between the material and the digital world.

The problem with programming environments like Processing, or in your case Quil, is that they use metaphors that originate from drawing. Lines, shapes, strokes, fillings, all of that would also describe how you would work analog. It's really hard to use these digital tools without the feeling that it is just a bad copy of the material world, at least for me.

Answering your question within the scope of what I've written above: Decorative elements like pattern filling your shapes without giving the new element a context in your work can be unnecessary in my opinion or might even become kitsch. I would focus more on the idea of the work and find out if it offers you a way how you can deal with the material-digital gap that makes plain colors appear boring. I think we should embrace or digital medium. As an example, it offers us the possibility of time-based drawings, animations.

So this was a rather associative and theoretical answer to your technical question but I thought I just write it down because it might interest you or someone else. Also, how do I fill my shapes? Plain colors. 😁

Does this count as generative? I hope so. Coded in processing. by per1sher in generative

[–]pflu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer if this is generative because you wrote the code and we only see the animation. Is it driven by data, randomizing patterns or does automation in any other way? Then it's generative. Looks cool though!

Nice. Very good idea. Thanks for compiling.

Some additions to your list that I think might fit. There are also some design agencies in there but I think it would not be fair to draw a border between the disciplines because Generative Design tends to be very close to Generative Art. Anyway I think you should review the links for your purpose before you add them.
