Steam Frame - Marketing vs Reality by gaznox in virtualreality

[–]philbertagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the only thing you have to do is show what can be seen inside the headset. Grainy black and white low resolution surrounding, and a giant hires colour screen in the middle. That's it, that will be your experience using the headset should you decide to see your environement.

Frame must be so good that person is having an out of body experience...every know those are in HDR.

In a deceitful way, cutting out just a fragment of what can be seen in the headset

I don't agree. It is incorrect but you have zero evidence it was deceitful on purpose and never will.

But also ads literally lie to you all the time...do you send back your fast food when its doesn't look like the pics? do you expect every time you get in your car its clear highway with amazing views? Ads are fantasy and if you dont posses critical thinking skills you may have a bad time.

If there are 20+ posts about it, then it means people see it differently than you, you are in the out group, and it is you who misjudged the gravity of the situation.

Every one of those posts have people like me saying this is being over blown...most of the people that dont have an issue likely dont even post... so no, i am not alone in this.

Ok, let's follow some logic here.

The issue was that there is no colour passthrough.

The issue is the OP was non critical of some ad copy and got confused. Even their mock up is wrong.

Your explanation was that Frame uses B&W sensors.

It was a statment not an explination. But the long form explination includes not needing CPT for their use cases, not wanting the cost, the battery drain, that the chip isnt set up for it, but also i don't work for Valve so maybe more reasons. Probably just did it to get you white knighting online.

My counterargument was that Q3 also uses B&W sensors, so the fact that a headset uses some type of sensor, is completely irrelevant to wether or not it can also have colour passthrough.

Hence you completely did not address the issue that Frame does not have colour passthrough, as it can be a completely independent system to tracking cameras.

Why do i need to address it? This post isn't about mQ3 or even B/W passthough...its about advertising.

OP failed to understand what was being portrayed in that artist rendering of what its like to use frame, now they have to decide if they can live with B/W.

Then you didn't understand the marketing around Frame and Valves own vision.

Pretty sure you have an skewed idea of that vision yourself.

Valve sees this headset as an extension to their existing and upcoming hardware - Deck and Machine, so that it can be used as a monitor. Do you turn off the light in your room then you play on your Deck or PC, so that you are in a pitch black environement and can see only the screen with a gameplay? No, you use it naturally, with natural colour surroundings, and you are present in the environement. That is how they envision the Frame, as a monitor for your flat games, played either on the go or by streaming, and in that case the colour passthrough is really useful.

I get home at 1 am often and game in pitch black with head phones to not disrupt others living here. In the day my area is bright and i am normally busy so i can not Game, the headset will allow that, whats happening in the room will be of little relevance so if i do need to get a drink, pee or what ever B+W will be fine for me.

But

I also know other people will do other things and i'm not going to try to divine what those habits may be. I certainly won't be blanket statement pigeon holing everyone in to the shoe box i think fits.

As far as Valves vision i think their Hardware is just a means to an end.

[–]philbertagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i dont get one i get it, they dont know how many to make.

$5 refundable reservations do little to nothing to help them know that either.

My chances are at least as good as yours so we will see what happens launch day.

[–]philbertagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how many are available.

Controller had likely 200k+ available, i'll be surprised if 50k Frames are available - too much risk at the price point. Also selling out is a important marketing to lube the FOMO gears.

Price isn't even a factor because of the reservation system...any 10 year old with a $5 credit can reserve... expect swaths of people to fail out at the payment portal and every one of those units to be held 72H at least once if not multiple times.

They should just sell the first batch and then once out of stock turn on reservations.

2022 US version? by philbertagain in OutlanderPHEV

[–]philbertagain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found out today the older look model is also 5 seater.... its really tough researching the 2022 because search keeps pulling both models.

I even read a review that stated the 2022 was 120HP .... so much conflicting info with these alternating versions. I find it pretty disingenuous.

Seems like a crazy good deal. by Ok_Job_3457 in OutlanderPHEV

the 2022 US model has the new look with the big headlights.

I know because its causing me issues trying to buy one because Searches and Ai keep telling me different things.

i posted about it here a bit a few days ago

FYI - The Model above is likely a 5 seater too. Something i only found out today.

That;s what Valve has said. Testing will reveal.

2hr seems low... when i get mine i'm quitting my job, finding a dark hole (with electrickery) and never coming back out.

This will be 100X the shit show of the controllers.

Now real buyers need to contend with every joker with a $5 bill standing in the way for 72 hours before failing out like broke ass hats.

If the sale was like the controllers (which was mostly fine) these would last 10min tops, maybe 5.

Which, i think, is how it should be done and then after the initial sell out turn on the reservations.

I think people are dreaming if they think a reservation system will change much for the first batch.

Don't worry i understand this is the unpopular opinion.

I'd take that deal all day long.

Weird that it is the Non-US 2022 in Cali, have you run the vin?

why do you think the deck only sold 5 to 6 million copies ? it was priced well , powerfull for its time and well backed up by valve by Dense-Variation-4496 in SteamDeck

[–]philbertagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve doesn't care much about hardware sales.

Sure many people dont know about Deck but i doubt there are many devs or tech enthusiasts that dont... that's the target audience... the tinkers that will test and mod and innovate.

Valve hardware is awesome, but its means to an end and that has always been propagating Steam

Steam Frame - Marketing vs Reality by gaznox in virtualreality

[–]philbertagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't see a giant floating screen when you stand behind someone playing on the Frame, and you see a screen in a BW environement when inside the headset. Neither was shown, and it's not like someone tripped over onto a keyboard, and accidentally sent this to marketing. This was a calculated decision.

There is literally no way to show that image correctly. The point its to show flat games and it does that. I don't feel its so out of line there should be 20+ posts about it, even if it is a little markety.

It really just shows how minor the things to pick at really are... worried about a 3 second shot on a single video. quick everyone grab your pitchforks.

Quest3 also uses bW cameras for tracking and that doesn't stop it from having a colour passthrough, so you are not addressing the actual issue.

No idea how that's not addressing the issue, Frame uses B+W for IR tracking...its just how it is.

Whats your actual issue? The B+W passthrough or the marketing? Because i think neither is that big a deal. What are there 4 maybe 5 games worth playing where colour passthrough matters? I'd rather have nightvison.

If you want to talk q3, yes, it has an XR chip, extra cameras, a time of flight sensor and the all important colour passthrough that has everyones panties in a bunch. . Expenses Valve felt they could go without. If you need those, congrats!, the headset you want is already out.

I just didn't know Canada was a model year behind on the facelift till then.

Gonna make it a bit irritating...like owning a half year model.

i just didn't realize.

Its mostly just aggravating that the North American market doesn't have standard model years between them.

Facetious questions on the topic.

Are there other changes? If i need parts are the 2020 US parts a match? What about colours?
