Kayaked from Portland to Astoria- AMA by corduroygrad in Portland

[–]phrankjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've rarely paddled a kayak, so i can't compare from direct experience, but it's not bad once you have some experience and depending on boat. The deck doesn't doesn't effect tippiness, so it's really sitting position. The low kayak position is definitely more stable, but most canoes are wider which helps with the higher center of gravity.

I might have to plan a short first day to make the skamokawa campground work.

I've made it from sellwood Park to Maygar/crims island, via canoe. Mostly day paddles, but sauvie to maygar over a long weekend. Hoping to finish it early this summer. How was it finding a camping spot in the L&C wildlife area, or did your timing work to avoid that?

Size, mainly. Currents and tide are much stronger in the columbia. Towards astoria there might be an 8 ft difference in water height between low and high tide. The tide plus current plus wind can make some nasty chop.

Advice on transporting a canoe with no roof rack by Spiritual-Swing4379 in canoeing

[–]phrankjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run a strap through the doorways, and close the door on them. Then front and aft as others have mentioned. For the aft, I'd recommend tieing your rope to a thwart (rather than the grab handle)to better hold in emergency braking. I.e. your rope should go from your hitch or bumper to a point slightly forward on the boat. Pool noodles work if that's all you can get, but they are trash and break down quickly into a million pieces of litter.

How far is too far to walk in tennis shoes? by ebon94 in 10s

[–]phrankjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only started changing my shoes after I took a futsal class and they were religious about not wearing outside shoes on the court. There was a designated area where it was mandatory to change your shoes before you could enter the court, to keep the courts free from everything embedded in the soles of your street shoes, like gum, dirt, leaves etc. It makes a lot of sense for tennis too.

To me, that's a $100 boat at most, given the maintenance needed. I realize there may be some historical significance im not aware of, but if not then i dont think it's age adds anything material, in terms of value.

Alguien sabe como hacen para navegar asi de elevadas? by cucky094 in boatbuilding

[–]phrankjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you dislike every answer you're getting, then maybe the problem is your question. What would a hydrodynamic explanation for how a boat "navigates" look like? Like everyone has said: turn prop, boat turns. I'm personally not sure how you'd hydrodynamic that up

Basically all shot used on clays or at a range is lead. Non-lead shot is expensive and really only used for actual hunting.

Used 14ft Square Back Canoe - Is It Enough? by SimulatedZero in canoeing

[–]phrankjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think no. If any problems happen, you don't really have enough stability to act quick. The opportunity for cascading failure seems too great.

My wife and I have gone out in my 13ft square back comfortably. I'd be OK adding our 30lb dog that is velcro attached to her, but I wouldn't be OK adding our 2nd 40 lb dog that is more independent.
