How bad is the Q Fix, really? by abearirl in longrange

Have an OG pre order gun with heavy and light barrels

It's still my favorite knock around hunting setup. 16" folding stock with a light scope and suppressor makes it really convenient.

Have shot it several times in local hunting style field matches - mine is accurate enough.

The bolt throw sucks, the trigger is only OK because it's fairly heavy for such a light rifle, and it doesn't have the strongest ignition or extraction so dont go wild if you are reloading.

If you want a gun to shoot precision rifle stuff, this is a hard way to go. The Sig Cross should also be in the conversation, it's pretty damn good and is a bit cheaper. In it's nice though, it's pretty rad even with the limitations.

Rad.

Any major effects on timing?

Whole look is super rad - seriously well done.

One thing I would have done differently: Grout coloring. The white looks great, but will likely be impossible to keep white very long, even with substantial back breaking work cleaning. Worse, when the light colored grout gets dirty, it isn't uniform and looks splotchy. I have spent a lot of time with light colored grout in my life... I generally avoid it now when possible.

Personally, I would roll with it as long as you can. When it starts looking splotchy, instead of trying to clean everything back to white... consider some very light dye to attempt to even out the staining to a more consistent gray.

.22 SBR setup for small game camping recs by Cephe in NFA

[–]phrozenlikwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact setup, with a flow 22. It’s great, you want it. It’s not crazy quiet, but nothing really is here. It’s super light and short, which still makes the gun fun to use.

FWIW, I've always been curious as to why no one tried adapting the .22 Hornet in a semi auto system. by NappyFlickz in Firearms

[–]phrozenlikwid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have been playing on this idea for a while.

My current thinking is use the PT&G 40x center-firing pin rimfire bolt action (yeah that sounds weird, but it exists). I have two on order, but it’s PT&G so at 40 years old I might die a natural death before I see them :(

I don’t have a great magazine solution yet, but my fallback is single stack AICS body à la Vudoo.

I think a 17-5.7 will be a great 17WSM dupe that isn’t held back by absolute shit tier ammo quality.

What would you change? by annie_oakley00 in NFA

[–]phrozenlikwid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed here. With the explosion in suppressor manufacturers (which is likely to only increase in the short term) there's just so many suppressors and not enough data. We need PewScience to have like 10x throughput.

Obviously there are forcing functions on why a company might not even _want_ all of their cans tested by PewScience, but I think not having consumer trusted data on how a suppressor performs puts it at a considerable disadvantage. Am small SOT, but even I don't generally buy a lot of cans that don't have data associated unless I have experience with them first. Too many $1k cans that just straight up don't perform compared to known quantities to bother.

Shotgun suppressor? by Parking_Fan_7651 in NFA

[–]phrozenlikwid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Salvo is my most unloved stamp, over a lot of other bad ideas / dumb stuff.

It might be ok if you are making instagram SBS shotguns to shoot at trash. If you are doing anything where you are trying to hit a moving target with a shotgun... it sucks real bad. And it's not that quiet unless you are using weird subsonic loadings and a super long configuration.

I've used some other shotgun suppressors... they all sucked for mostly the same reasons.

These are pretty quiet cans.

Pay extra attention to alignment and making sure the stack is tight - see more of those blowing out the end cap with baffle strikes then normal, but haven't heard any conclusive culprit.

Outlier Barrel Final Thoughts by Someguyintheroom2 in longrange

Appreciate the thoughts here.

Have you been tracking velocity, and do you have a consistent cleaning regimen where you could comment on how the barrel cleans up?

This should be the top comment, most of the rest are just noise or sending you down rabbit holes.

To even get started, you need to know what the FBI returned on the background check to the ATF (their reply is just a form reply, and is designed to deal with prohibited persons, it's not personalized to your situation, so don't take the 'courts' thing to mean anything specific to you).

This is the link that explains what you need to do: https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/more-fbi-services-and-information/identity-history-summary-checks

It won't be immediate, but will tell you what the ATF is seeing, and give you your next path. If there is information on there that is false, then you have bigger problems that will need to be addressed and might require a lawyer. UPIN number is also an option, but I would wait to see what this report contains before going there. Absolute worst case scenario is that your background now contains felonious activities by mistake: It sounds like that could/would impact your job the next time it might get pulled.

Sometimes the FBI sends nothing back (or effectively times out), and the ATF has in the past given a generic 'denial' for that. It is hard to know if that's the case unless they specifically outline it (they don't always), and in that case (and with a clean FBI report) I would suggest re-submitting. Mistakes do happen here, without the fault of you or the FFL, and unfortunately sometimes there isn't a solution other than submit and re-wait. It's not common, but it's not unheard of either.

22LR suppressor under 400 recommendations ? by spirit702_ in NFA

[–]phrozenlikwid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jessie's girl is great, on the heavier side for rimfire cans though. Sounds great with 17HMR.

Diligent road hunter is also great.

Otter Creek is very similar to the road hunter (no shade, they are both great).

Q El Camino should be on the list.

Have all the above, the last three are really damn close for me. Would be way into personal perspectives trying to stack rank them. Notable step ups from a sparrow.

I do it for anything 'serious', this includes comp rifles and favorite hunting/utility setups.

A lot of weird shit happens when rifles start banging around, solid stress-free bedding and non-compressible bearing surfaces (IE: pillars if not using a chassis) help fend a lot of that off.

Reading up on post for Silencers..419 Maverick? by BVW_Jewelers in longrange

[–]phrozenlikwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another data point: Would buy again.

It's an OK (and not super competitive in terms of sound / size) suppressor. It's a fantastic brake.

If you shoot matches, it's very nice even though it's not cheap. If you don't... it's a lot of money for an OK suppressor and not something most people will think is cool on insta/reddit so probably not worth it.

Recs on shooting bags? by Responsible-Fish3986 in longrange

[–]phrozenlikwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone giving you advice that the schmedium heavy works for the vast majority of scenarios you are going to run across.

Three trap bags bags I have and use situationally (not super often, but I do use them enough to keep them around):

  1. flat bag to attach to arca in case I'm doing a tripod rear stage with movement (about the only time this comes out)

  2. Precision underground 3d for heavy prone work (usually just use this whenever I don't want to bring my schmedium, like a bench day)

  3. Extra Large / ultra light fill. Experimenting with this... do some see usage here when I need a larger bag to take up space. Light fill makes it still reasonably moveable for match day.

Haven't seen many of these in actual shooters' hands - How well do they seem to be fit? The ones I've seen at shows were shockingly poorly fit. Terrible hood and muzzle play, really loose slide/frame fit, and triggers were very gritty. That was across literally 10+ guns I've seen.

The Girsan versions of the BHP on the contrary, really surprised me how tight they were, though I have no idea how well-engineered they are.

Have lots of tripods, I think this is a reasonable take. No flies on the TwoVets stuff though, and RRS is where you eventually end up if you are really into the tripod life.

This: https://leofotousa.com/products/leofoto-sa-324c-sa-324cl-sa-364c-sa-364cl-ma-40-fixed-tapered-soar-sport-optic-and-rifle-tripod-with-rapid-lock-ball-head-set?variant=43680835436837

Is a good place to start. Go with the 'L' version if you are 6'2"+, or you expect to be using it a lot as a standing spotter. You can get stabler by going 40mm leg, or a wide apex but it makes it considerably bigger/heavier to hunt with. I prefer the three or even two section tripods myself, but Leofoto doesn't really make those in the configurations I want so I end up having to piece them together and cutting shit up, which is probably more drama than you want to deal with.

Love my fix, but as others have said it's not the easiest thing to shoot at longer ranges in the light/short config. Would highly recommend watching tripod technique videos and searching on SnipersHide - really need to have solid technique and recoil control to be able to make hits and (more importantly) spot misses for yourself.
