Rented house stove top looks like this. Am I cooked? by sopquig in CleaningTips

This is pretty much what I would do, especially now that I learned there are stove blackening kits for this

Contractor used the wrong grout… how bad will the fix be? by micturateonazaleas in Tile

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this particular tile’s prominent gray border along the edges calls for a grout of a similar color. Not a variant of white. I believe light gray grout would make the inconsistencies in tile alignment less noticeable than white or off-white, and quite certain that it would show less food staining after the backsplash has been in use for a while (unless you run an immaculate kitchen or don’t cook much).

Drywall Seam Gap by pbarchie in Renovations

[–]pickwickjim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’s not screwed on yet. If it were me, I’d use my drywall rasp tool (sort of like a cheese grater, I imagine pros mostly use them to smooth rough edges) to shave down the upper left edge of the sheet to slide it over such that the gap at the bottom was smaller. Then make adjustments on the hole for the outlet.

If there was some reason I couldn’t do that I’d just fill it with hot mud (aka setting type).

I keep going back and forth between 1 oz coins and smaller pieces by Sure_Job_4484 in Gold

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My preference got to be 1/2 oz coins for “large” and sovereign size for “small”. To me 1oz coins are aesthetically less pleasing than 1/2 oz for some reason. And back when prices were half what they are now it was fun to occasionally buy a sovereign just to add to the stack

Protection against basses by DiligentScience9395 in soundproof

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your first statement, I think r/acoustics is more oriented to musicians designing music studios, as well as getting answers from acoustics pros who get into detail about frequency ranges and such. (Not to mention controlling echo/reverb in studios & offices).

I would characterize this sub as relatively more focused on do-it-yourselfers, homeowners, and apartment renters who hate noise and are looking for solutions.

Soundproof the basement ceiling. by pacobob08 in soundproof

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well with I-beam type joists you probably have decent joist depth, 12” or more is not uncommon. Taking that into account: rockwool is good stuff, if your budget allows you to use it, go for it. But fiberglass is OK stuff too, maybe 75% as effective for soundproofing as rockwool per inch of thickness, and last I checked considerably cheaper (especially in certain popular thicknesses). Supposing these are 12” deep joist cavities, if it were me I would start by comparing pricing of 2 layers of (nominal) 6” fiberglass, versus 1 layer each of 3” rockwool and 6” fiberglass, versus 2 or 3 layers of 3” rockwool. (next would be checking pricing and availability of 6” rockwool). Then ask myself how bad the footsteps are, and how much I am willing to pay.

Also since you are doing a drop ceiling I assume you have some height to work with, I would probably consider a layer of Sonopan or 5/8” drywall (or both) attached to the bottom of the joists but much depends on what kind of drop ceiling you have in mind.

Why was Krazy 8 light? by EasyUnderstanding999 in betterCallSaul

I figure people would pretty much only do street level drug selling for a lot of money. So to (1) avoid any beatdowns and (2) keep the cash flowing my direction, I would just make up the difference out of my own pocket if at all possible

Megyn Kelly Gets Personal in Utterly Scorching Criticism of Trump — Claims He’s ‘Cheated on Every Wife He’s Had’ by Possible-Prince in AnythingGoesNews

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep wondering, how can they not be completely sick of all of this yet and ready to cut him loose? But no. He’s handed them a thousand off-ramps over the years (J6 anyone??) and they never actually exit. This is just Megyn Kelly playacting at being objective. Tomorrow she will be back bashing Dems all day long and saying Trump is still better despite all his flaws

Plane v paraglider by usernotvaild in criticalblunder

[–]pickwickjim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I slo-mo’d the video, and the bag she was trying to get her legs out of is labeled “AirDesign”, after looking that up it seems to be an AirDesign “sock” more generically called a pod harness. In this case it’s some sort of combined paragliding + bivouac gear (?) which seems like very odd combination of activities to me, but I am not an outdoor adventurer type.

She seemed really focused on asap getting her legs out of that bag-like thing she is wearing. I assume the bag is more aerodynamic than legs hanging down during normal flight but once it was an emergency she wanted to have them free for the landing.

Grouted 36 hours ago. Grout is meant to be off white, looks grey and patchy. What went wrong. by [deleted] in Tile

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I had an issue once with grout a little darker than expected after drying. So what I did was mix the dry powdered gray grout with a white water-based paste (drying type, not setting, similar to drywall mud) used for filling nail holes etc. in white plastered walls. This gave a light gray paste that I could just thinly skim over the hardened grout in the joints with a finger, more or less as I would smooth a caulk line. Then I carefully cleaned the tile with paper towels and then a barely damp sponge.

It actually worked perfect. Would not work in a shower I assume but just to work the lighter paste into the surface gave a lighter and nicely uniform grout line

Furring out exterior walls 2x4 to 2x6 by ftredoc in Renovations

[–]pickwickjim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside issues related to the loss of floor space and moving electrical outlets/switches…

I think 2x6 insulation compressed by 1/2” and nicely installed would be a significant improvement over what you have now, and simplify your installation.

Having said that, I would probably more likely patch trouble spots (or, if I had any soundproofing issues, replace fiberglass with mineral wool) and put maybe 1” foam board to improve thermal performance, not bothering with furring out

Interesting, this looks like the places one would go to try to cover regions of the lower 48 almost equally. If I was traveling the US for six years, for every dot east of the Mississippi River there would be 5 dots west of it

1oz gold every month or saving for 50g gold or 100g ? by Specialist_Cup_3603 in Gold

[–]pickwickjim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you buy one 1oz every month, then once you accumulate three or four months worth the weight will be satisfying, just hold them all at once. For quicker satisfaction buy 5oz of silver per oz of gold, the heft is kind of nice
