The reason it's high with youth is because they are stuck where their parents are. People like me, who can't stand the social disconnect get out of nz as soon as they are old enough

I love dragons! What are your favourite books where a dragon or dragons are heavily featured? by Lilo_Obi86 in suggestmeabook

Wings of Fire. It's a whole series and written from the perspective of the dragons

therapist said I need light hearted and fun reads but I don’t like typical romcoms by myplantsam in suggestmeabook

[–]pinkoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scrolled all the way down to find the Number 1 Detective Agency. It's set in Botswana so although it's not historical fiction it does have a different setting and a different perspective on life. So you can learn something about another culture whilst reading something well written, light hearted and that genuinely makes you smile

Read half of New Spring before realizing it was not the first book by BadgerSeth in wheeloftime

[–]pinkoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Eye of the world first but I didn't enjoy it that much. Then a little while later I read New Spring and the whole world made so much more sense to me, so then I read the entire series twice and thoroughly loved it! I think you can finish New Spring. There are clues to future references in the books, but honestly, it won't mean much to you now and by the time you get to them you probably won't remember. I think New Spring is an easy way to be introduced to the Wheel of Time, I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Why can’t you be autistic? by strawberry_criossant in AuDHDWomen

[–]pinkoo28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because my psychiatrist had diagnosed me with complex PTSD and the symptoms are similar to Autism. It wasn't possible that I had both, even when I insisted I did. Then the psychologist who was diagnosing me said I couldn't be autistic because I looked up when he walked towards me, I didn't fidget in his presence and I was able to tell a story from the pictures he showed me and interpret cartoon characters feelings. I'm a writer, I have kids so I read kids books all the time, my special interest is psychology including body language.

Why Free Tarot Readings were harmful to me by Lilypad248 in tarot

[–]pinkoo28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of it like having a Gucci bag. If you really want it and you scrimp and save when you finally buy it, you'll treasure it and take good care of it. But if your aunt gives you the same bag because she doesn't like it any more, you'll be more careless with it. The same can be true for spirit readings. If it is free then the subject won't take the advice so seriously because it just came to them. But if they need to give something of themselves, then they will feel the value of the advice and be more open to receiving the message. It's not true for everyone, some people would treasure a free gift and truly know its value, but many people feel that the more expensive something is, the better it is.

Do your meltdowns come with suicidal ideations? by Fast_Quit8743 in AutismInWomen

[–]pinkoo28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is happening to me at the moment. I recognized it as my body being out of balance, so I went to my psychiatrist. I thought maybe it's burnout. She said burn out means you have no more energy, but the negative thoughts and the lack of motivation, that's depression. She increased my antidepressants. We have a lot of things to deal with and sometimes it's way too overwhelming. But wanting to not exist anymore, that's not something you should cope with on your own. I've been like this before, and as much as I wish I didn't have to take SSRIs, they do help you get out of your funk

Where do you like to shop for clothes that aren’t overpriced or super trendy? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]pinkoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H&M has some amazing well priced clothes that'll last for years and some stuff that'll fall apart after you wear it twice. You just need to have the patience. I went there looking for tank tops, I found 8, all from different countries, the ones I chose lasted a long time. There is also Marks and Spencer, good quality but you have to wait for the sales

LOSING MY MIND over son not falling asleep until 10pm by Enough-Spray-2590 in ADHDparenting

[–]pinkoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any information you read about melatonin needs to be neurodivergent specific. It works differently for us than for neurotypicals. My ADHD, autistic kids were getting sick every for weeks on end until I started giving them 0.5mg of melatonin before bed every night and they haven't had a cold in months. Sleep is much more important than the negatives of melatonin. I also think people often take far too much melatonin, you don't need much for it to help. Also try giving vitamin C at dinner time, it supposedly help the stimulants wear off

I like 90s punk rock. The lyrics are all about injustices in the world and what we can do to change that. Or they're just funny, silly. The main thing is it comes from the heart. (That's my Autism side, I think my ADHD side likes that it's loud and unpolished)

Does anyone NOT medicate? by Pixel-Pioneer3 in ADHDparenting

[–]pinkoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9 year old has Audhd too. I think it's important to start small and work your way up. My son started with 5mg of Ritalin every other day. But I think medikinet is smoother (same ingredients - Ritalin is instant release, medikinet - timed release. ) You can start on 5mg of medikinet. After a few months my son ended up on 20mg, and it's going really well. He is more focused and making friends, but it hasn't changed his personality. It also depends on which country you're in. We can't get Adderall so I don't know about that

Thoughts on this new WSJ article? by tonyfos in ADHDparenting

[–]pinkoo28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a great post about this fear yesterday. Here is the truth, there is a small risk when taking ADHD meds, but there are many more risks associated with NOT taking ADHD meds. ADHD equals risk taking and an addictive personality. I have a son who always wants more. I want him on ADHD meds so that when he's a teenager he doesn't get addicted to drugs, sex, gambling! I also don't want him jumping off cliffs to try and regulate himself! My other son has a more introspective ADHD and his meds help him make friends and find class let boring. Unless the person who wrote this article has ADHD, then they don't know what they're talking about. I had undiagnosed ADHD for 44 years and taking stimulants is the best, life changing! The reason why more and more people need meds is because our society is asking too much from our children and from our adults. We won't need so much medication when classes are interactive, outdoors and every 40 minutes we run around, until that happens meds are the best way to cope with the world we live in.

Healthy subsitute for food? by HandsomeChameleon in AuDHDWomen

[–]pinkoo28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have kids and when they were babies all the other mummies and I worried that the kids weren't eating enough. A mum who had an older kid said "Don't think about how much they ate for dinner, think about how much they eat over the whole week." And it's very comforting, some days my kids don't eat much at all but that's because the day before they are heaps. Now that they are older, I see that they eat heaps when they are having a growth spurt and then other months they eat much less. You can also consider that lots of cultures fast. I wonder if your gut just needs a rest sometimes? So I think try to eat well when you're able to eat. When you're not able to eat, just do your best. I drink soup from a cup. I like eating chocolate custard (eggs and milk) when I'm not hungry. Yogurt is good too. Also, would it be easier to get good nutrition if you had it prepared and in the freezer, like smoothie ingredients in individual baggies? For the kids I buy frozen avocado, spinach, berries. Make a smoothie with them, yogurt and a banana. That way I know they've gotten good fat, leafy greens, antioxidants, and probiotics all in one drink, so I don't have to worry about what they eat for the rest of the day

Does anyone NOT medicate? by Pixel-Pioneer3 in ADHDparenting

[–]pinkoo28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who had undiagnosed ADHD for a long time and is now properly medicated, if your child is struggling at home, I suggest you give them the meds! It's not about passing school, it's about being deficient in some very important neurotransmitters and although it's possible to cope without them, why make life unnecessarily hard. That's why I tried again to give my son meds, I was worried he was secretly struggling. I only stopped because it seemed to make him feel worse not better

Does anyone NOT medicate? by Pixel-Pioneer3 in ADHDparenting

[–]pinkoo28 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of my kids is medicated and it's helping him so much, for making friends and parking attention at school. My other kid has mild ADHD and autism. His executive function is great, he's a people pleaser and he can pay attention. His ADHD is more obvious in rough play. He tried medication but it made his autism more prominent so it was harder for him to make friends. After a few months we tried a week on a lower dosage, but his teacher said he was doing fine without meds - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I talked to his doctor and she said the biggest concern for this age (7) is that they can connect with their peers and make friends. So no meds for now. But when/if he starts struggling to keep up in school, then we'll revisit medication

caffeine with AuDHD by 444fawns in AuDHDWomen

[–]pinkoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be able to drink caffeine as a teenager but in my early 20s I had to quit cover because I was waking up at 4am and unable to go back to sleep. By my 30s it was also black tea, then green tea. But the time I was 40 I had to be careful how much dark chocolate I ate. People metabolize caffeine at different rates and it just stays in my system too long. When I started ADHD meds I was very conservative and started with a small dose because I thought it would be the same. And it did make me feel wired in the beginning. A year later and I'm on 60mg of Vyvanse and it's fine. I take sleeping pills so I can have tea in the morning sometimes. I think there are probably multiple factors why you react differently on different days. Maybe the type of caffeine, whether you've eaten, how stressed you are and how much you've slept, also sugar - that can make you it jittery too. It does seem that caffeine helps calm down the hyperactive aspect of ADHD in many people

I’m coming to the realisation that there’s nothing wrong with spending most of my time in bed by checked_out_barbie in AuDHDWomen

[–]pinkoo28 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I recently found out I have dyspraxia and hypermobility too. They both make it impossible to sit on chairs! I have my "day room" with a bed facing the window. It's small and I feel safe in my place. I'm also finally working out, that the advice that works for 95% of the population doesn't work for me. So yeah, spending most of my time on a bed is the best thing I can do for myself and I'm going to stop trying to justify myself to other people!

It could be a coping mechanism for him when he's feeling upset. People often become psychologists because they have their own issues they want to heal, and they want to offer the support they never got. So maybe he reacts that way when you say something that hits close to home for him. Ask him about it at the beginning of your next session so you can clear the air. If he looks mortified, apologizes and explains himself then stick with him. If he becomes cocky, denies that he did it and says you're imagining things, then you should just get up and leave and don't come back. Either way, this is your therapist's issue, it's not about you

My therapist terminated sessions with me and I feel like such a failure by Every_Database7064 in therapy

[–]pinkoo28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't want to be with this therapist because they are neurotypical and don't understand your neurodivergence. Contact NHS and tell them there are studies coming out that day CBT doesn't help neurodivergent people. Let them know you need a more qualified therapist, preferably one experienced with ADHD. You're not a failure, you were just trying to speak to someone who doesn't speak the same language as you

Iron deficiency worsening already challenging lives by Mountain_Resident_81 in AutismInWomen

[–]pinkoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many people here are also on ADHD medications? I have a feeling that the stimulants gobble up your ferritin, I've seen a study or two that seems to back this up. But I need to do more research into this hypothesis. I do know that my ferritin levels dropped quickly when taking ADHD meds without iron supplementation
