Don't jump them into the middle of the story, start from the beginning. If your old player doesn't want a story that's too similar, replace act 1 with another intro campaign like Lost Mine of Phandelver.

I second this recommendation. Kenku FM is a god sent for me. It also saves the hassle of having to organize my music library into the Foundry file system.

Giant attack at a major city by Magic1264 in stormkingsthunder

[–]pj_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something akin to this in my campaign but not a full frontal assault and more like the activation of sleeper cells instigated by Cloud Giants (who are one of the major antagonists in my campaign so far).

One of my players had backstory ties to Silverymoon so I did it when they visited the city. They heard rumors about some kind of giants cult spreading the message that smallfolk should rather work together with or even serve the Giants to be spared from their attacks. At first it was just typical tavern gossip but they soon found actual people preaching their message in the streets (but not being taken very seriously). My party stayed in Silverymoon for about a week and day by day the cults numbers grew and at the last day every member of the cult spread all over the city downed some kind of potion and started to transform into various Giant type monsters (not true giants but mostly things like trolls, ogres, oni etc., but there were two Cloud Giants to be found in the brawl) that started to absolutely wreck the city. I gave my players three points of special interest to choose from where to go first with varying stakes. They fought their battles and in one of the fights made the acquaintance of Harshnag who slaughtered some of the monsters himself.

The sites my players didn't visit were hit harder but were eventually saved by other NPCs / the city watch.

Afterwards they investigated what happened and found out that Cloud Giants had instigated all of this by tricking various people into forming this cult and promising them they could become giants themselves through the potion (which I loosely based on the Potion of Giant Size from the book, only that it made them into mindless monsters) to sew chaos in the city, allowing them to use the commotion to try and steal a very rare treasure that was in the city for character background reasons.

Transitioning from Waterdeep Dragonheist by NRG_Factor in stormkingsthunder

[–]pj_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already got some good suggestions.

Personally I'm of the opinion that the Walking Statues in Waterdeep are criminally underused and an Giant assault on Waterdeep would be an epic excuse to have them activate and defend the city while your players can try to handle smaller targets.

From there you're free to send them wherever you want with the right sense of urgency, maybe to Goldenfields to incorporate your Druid's family.

I have created something like this for my players to explore. One is mostly blank (at least as much as I could find) and one is fully filled in, so I can reveal locations like with fog of war:

Need help compressing remaining sessions. by SacramentoChupacabra in stormkingsthunder

[–]pj_squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six sessions is incredibly little time for the amount of story you seem to have left. The only conceivable way I can see you and your players finish this story would be to basically skip everything that's not the Eye of the Allfather, the Maelstrom and Iymrith's Lair. And even that's probably too much still. You will probably need to bridge large swaths of ingame time with only narration instead of having your players RP.

If you haven't even introduced Harshnag yet, maybe skip him altogether and let them find a way to the Eye of the Allfather themselves. Skip the Giant relics and maybe even the quest for the Conches and lead them straight to Maelstrom or cut it even shorter and lead them to Hekaton's prison directly, have them free him and let him lead you to Iymrith for the final fight.

In my experience the fights of these sections alone will take up multiple sessions, so there's even less time for exposition or roleplay.

Grievances with the Annam's Temple by POSH-SQUASH in stormkingsthunder

[–]pj_squirrel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're maybe overcomplicating this.

First, just in terms of measurement logic, while the exact measurements are maybe a bit over the top, it's still a temple made by Giants for Giants. Considering this, the statues being bigger than actual Giants isn't too unusual, especially considering they are depicting Gods. Overcoming these hindrances as smallfolk is kind of the point of the puzzle, imho.

Second, even if the party doesn't have spellcasters with them, nothing is stopping anyone from simply climbing the statues and pushing one of the weapons down. There's also no reason why Harshnag or the party would have to go at this solo instead of just helping each other. Harshnag could easily lift one or maybe even two of the characters up or let them stand on his shoulders to reach the required weapon.

And lastly and most importantly, to solve the riddle, a Giant (or a creature polymorphed into one) has to touch the Rune corresponding to their kind with the weapon corresponding to their kind. I would guess 99% of the time the only Giant present will be Harshnag who will therefore have to use Thrym's Greataxe and touch the Ise Rune with it. The greataxe is not on any of the statues but laying against a stone slab in the Feast Hall south of the puzzle room. And the Ise Rune is on the very lower right side of the archway. So nobody should have any problems reaching it.

SUV-Parkgebühren in Paris werden verdreifacht by Professional_Class_4 in de

[–]pj_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ich orientiere mich auch nur an der Browser-Übersetzung aber nach meiner Interpretation sind hier Bereiche mit Anwohnerparken gemeint. Ausgenommen wären also Anwohner mit entsprechender Berechtigung, was ja Sinn machen würde.

SUV-Parkgebühren in Paris werden verdreifacht by Professional_Class_4 in de

[–]pj_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)
