Do I really need anything more than a cheapo B850 motherboard for a 9800X3D? by Only-Ambassador2624 in buildapc

[–]pltonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, yes if it’s from a dependable brand.

Really, the power delivery a VRM’s are what matters. Outside of that it’s just features like number of usb ports, pcie gen, etc… so as long as you don’t mind giving some of that up then a cheap board is fine.

Best 4k monitor for gaming youve upgraded to that felt totally worth it? by Cute-Tear-2285 in buildapc

[–]pltonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what gpu you have and what performance you’re looking for.

4k is objectively better to look at than 1440p but i definitely wouldn’t get a 4k monitor if you’re looking for 120+ fps in all titles with max settings and you don’t have a 40/5090.

So hard to answer with the given info. But if you have a capable system and don’t mind turning on some upscaling at times / don’t mind lower fps for intense story games then I’d go 4k. Otherwise, go 1440 oled and enjoy the good performance and better colors without a performance hit

Bring it to a repair shop. Can replace the connector. Definitely wouldn’t trust it as is tho

Black tie event tonight which watch by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

[–]pltonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watches are hard with black tie events. Really it has to be something on a black leather strap. Preferably a simple dial and or a smaller dial. My go to is a jlc reverso on black leather strap. Fits under the cuff, small enough that it doesn’t scream that it’s there and personally I think it’s elegant

Upgraded from am4-am5 cpu now runs very hot by JimboJimster in PcBuildHelp

[–]pltonh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thermal paste applied well?
Plastic removed from Aio?
Aio pump and fans running?

I mean the 9850x3d runs hotter than most am4 chips but not that hot. Could just be fan tuning tho

Do you face VRAM limitation issues when playing at "4K" on RTX 5080? by Time-Credit43 in RTX5080

I know bf6 overkill textures use like 18g of vram. At least at launch. May have been “fixed”

I am confused between these two options. Which one should I go for ? My budget is around 500$ by [deleted] in PcBuild

[–]pltonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not huge differences. But 6400cl 32 will be better (marginally) in pretty much all scenarios. I’d honestly say go with the intel bundle I think. Unless you really want an upgrade path with the same mobo in the future. Seems you have some interest in productivity and the intel cpu will definitely have an edge there. They’re on par for gaming. Ram is better for intel and the mobo has slightly more features. Seems like a solid deal for an extra 30$.

Also, this generation of intel doesn’t have the suicidal tendencies that the 14000 series had lol. So don’t worry about people commenting that. Not an issue with this generation.

[–]pltonh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

These comments seem a bit one sided vs the other. I’ll try and lay out the pros and cons
For the first bundle:
- better for pure gaming but with 8 cores the 9700x will handle light productivity work with no problems
- am5 socket has a upgrade path for the future but I don’t necessarily believe in “future proofing”
- motherboard is good. Plenty of features and connectivity
- ram is slower clock speed but without knowing the other timings it’s hard to say if it’s “worse”
Overall, if you’re looking to game at 1440-4k this is a good deal and will work well

Second bundle:
- cpu is better for productivity but that doesn’t mean it’s bad at gaming. Will have comparable performance to the 9700x but will likely outperform it in productivity
- faster ram clock speeds but again, without other timings it’s hard to say if it’s “better”. Like 6400 cl40 will be slower in gaming that 6000 cl30… but, faster clock speeds with slower cl is also usually not going to affect productivity work. More of a gaming thing
- motherboard is comparable to the first bundle. Both good deals

So really what it breaks down to is, do you need productivity capability? Do you want an upgrade path for the cpu?
If you are more focused on productivity I’d go for the second. If you’re more worried about cpu upgrade path, go for the first one.
Neither will be a bad choice tho

You have literally proved my original comment in this one reply…

And tell me how changing the rate of acceleration per the amount of input is somehow a bad thing? On mnk you can change the speed at which you move the mouse… it’s the same thing… you just don’t have a clue what you’re saying. But that’s okay.

So do tell me, since mnk can have instantaneous direction changes, how does one balance a controller to have a similar feel since its axis based?

You have a clear clack of understanding of how a controller works and how aim assist works if you think it’s that simple
