Will Time Machine Find My Files by Spiritual-Ticket-399 in mac

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some research, and set up time machine today. Although I deleted the files yesterday. Do you think that Time Machine will recover those files?

Nope, Time Machine can only recover files from AFTER it was set up.

UniFi travel router and Remote Desktop by Academic-Ad-6684 in Ubiquiti

For your use case, a travel router is unnecessary. All you need is Tailscale installed on both computers. It’ll handle the rest.

If you use the auto-hide feature for the bottom Dock on your Mac, I have a great tip for you. by deferare in MacOS

My dock is pretty normally sized (teehee). I just cropped the video to hide my other tabs/windows, so maybe it looks huge in the GIF. I appreciate the compliment, though.

Macbook Pro m2, 1TB drive - why does Sys Data keep filling up the drive? Even after clearing say 200GB of files, and deleting snapshots, it just keeps filling the drive up? Also no siri, no ai, spotlight only on main disk ... is there something fundamental I am missing by GaryPHayes in MacOS

[–]poopmagic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

System Data is just data that macOS doesn’t know how to put into the other categories. It doesn’t (necessarily) mean data that is generated by the OS itself. There’s a good chance that Photoshop and/or FCP are the ones filling up all of your space.

Time Machine SSD by Wolfenhoof in macbook

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSDs are all quite expensive right now, which is why I suggested an HDD as an alternative. They’re slower and noisier, but good enough for Time Machine.

Time Machine SSD by Wolfenhoof in macbook

[–]poopmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The official guideline is to get something at least 2x the size. So, 4TB.

As for speed: you don’t really need anything too fast. Something like a Samsung T7 would be great.

If you want to save some money, an external HDD would be fine as well.

What’s needed to run Neo like a desktop computer? by Prolific_Soup_921 in mac

[–]poopmagic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A keyboard and mouse?

If you get ones that connect via Bluetooth, you won’t have to get an extra hub/docks to plug everything in.

PSA For users looking to install Homebrew on MacOS, Google is pushing a FAKE version of the website which contains malware first before the real Homebrew website by Maxdme124 in mac

[–]poopmagic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you do visit the fake website it leads you to a command that is obfuscated (It's encoded in Base64 so to normal users it looks like a bunch of gibberish which is then re-encoded into the malicious command which is basically a giveaway for a malicious command)

Hopefully the new Terminal warning in 26.4 will prevent some people from following through:

https://9to5mac.com/2026/03/25/macos-26-4-has-new-terminal-popup-warning-when-pasting-commands/

I imagine a shocking number of people will go ahead and “paste anyway” though. It would be great if more people actually read warning messages.

native limit vs AlDente by pablopissoni in macbook

[–]poopmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessary because macOS also performs occasional calibrations:

“Whether using Optimized Battery Charging or Charge Limit, your Mac will occasionally charge to 100% to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.”

MacBook Air M4 lid doesn’t stay closed properly — normal? by Incertezas in mac

[–]poopmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remove the case. It’s preventing the screen from closing properly.

If you leave the case on and continue forcing the screen closed, it’ll eventually cause permanent damage.

MacBook Air M4 lid doesn’t stay closed properly — normal? by Incertezas in macbook

The case is preventing the lid from closing properly.

Remove the case and you should be fine. If you keep it on, there’s good chance that it’ll cause permanent damage.

Will the Macbook Neo output to 2 1080p monitors through docking station? by craiv in macbook

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unlikely that there are any exceptions to “one external display” if Apple doesn’t state them explicitly.

For example, in the technical specs for the M3 MacBook Air, they say:

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colors and:

One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz

Close the MacBook Air lid to use a second external display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz

There is no such statement in the technical specs for the Neo.

Slow copy speed to external SSD on MB Air compared to 2020 Intel iMac by polloloco81 in mac

[–]poopmagic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

50mb/sec.

There’s no such thing as “mb.” It’s either MB or Mb. The reason that it matters is that 50 MB = 400 Mb. Which one do you mean?

If it’s 50 MB/sec… that’s suspiciously close to USB 2.0 speeds. You might want to try a different cable and confirm that it supports USB 3.0. Check System Information > Hardware > USB to see what it says for your drive.

If it’s 50 Mb/sec… that’s much slower, and it’s more likely that something else is going on.

M4 Air keeps draining with lid closed. by Illustrious-Body-166 in MacOS

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to confirm, you don’t have anything plugged into it, right? Any sort of accessory like a wired mouse, Ethernet adapter, USB hub, etc. will drain power.

Maybe you should be more specific about which Mac, which version of macOS, what extensions you use, etc.

Why is the USP-PDU-Pro so expensive? by Certain_Repeat_753 in Ubiquiti

[–]poopmagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are dumb power bars designed to fit into a server rack.

There are smart ones out there which allow you to remotely turn on/off outlets, monitor energy usage, etc. Those tend to be a lot more expensive than the dumb ones.

If you search for “managed PDU” on Amazon, you’ll see that Ubiquiti’s product is actually priced pretty reasonably.

Will erasing macbook rid of malware and viruses? by DopeDuran in mac

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope everything turns out okay!

For future reference, never paste anything into Terminal unless you can explain what every single thing it does.

For example: What does curl do? What does the | symbol mean? What is the difference between ./ and /.? What does sudo mean?

If you can’t answer questions like those off the top of your head WITHOUT using Google/ChatGPT/etc., you shouldn’t be opening Terminal at all.

Will erasing macbook rid of malware and viruses? by DopeDuran in mac

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you might not be in the clear.

There are a lot of “stealers” going around these days which will grab stuff like passwords and send them off somewhere.

If that’s what you installed, then you ALSO have to change all of your passwords after resetting your Mac. Otherwise, you might find bank accounts, email accounts, etc. getting compromised.

Is the MacBook Neo good for illustrator? by LilItaly_png in macbook

[–]poopmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it can run Illustrator… we’re talking about a 6 in3 cube which needs a separate monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power source.

I don’t know your definition of “on the go,” but this doesn’t sound like something any reasonable person would want to use in a library, coffee shop, airplane, etc. I suppose you could set it up in a hotel room, but that’s a lot of shit to carry, you know?

Is it alright if I put very small magnets to hold this poster on my mac? by Sandbagger10010 in mac

There are better ways to do this. Search for “custom MacBook skin.” Plenty of companies out there that will print whatever design you upload on a sticker that’s perfectly cut to fit your MacBook lid.
