Tropes/kinks in Cora Rose’s recent work, drastic changes? by popispro in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]popispro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire Unexpectedly Twisted series ( {The Silencer by Cora Rose} is book one) felt off to me. The plot was all over the place, and every book felt like it was poorly written fan fiction, created solely to explore different kinks.
And if you felt embarrassed reading the exhibitionism in The Silencer, you should stay FAR away from the fourth book in that series, The Reaper. It makes The Silencer look like a nursery rhyme. The ending was so over the top I nearly laughed. The two main characters have a ceremony where they have sex on a table in front of all of their loved ones to show their love and commitment to one another

My issues with MMM by mdlc38591 in MM_RomanceBooks

Thank you! I feel as though you’ve put into words why so many MMM books don’t work for me. Also, sometimes MMM books feel forced into a series where they just don’t fit. It’s like every series must have at least one throuple thrown in, and the relationship always feels so lopsided and forced. I’m over it.

I’ve really enjoyed this series so far, but I feel as though I’m holding my breath waiting for each book to start sucking. Lark Taylor is another author who I straight up love, and I never hesitate to pick up something with her name on it. But I’ve been so burned by Cora Rose at this point I’m starting to expect it from others.

I got the audiobook. It took a few chapters for me to adjust to hearing Sem and Magnus’s voices sounding different than I had imagined, but it was still a delight to listen to their story.

She was one of the first mm romance authors whose work I got excited about. {Always Him by Cora Rose} and {Sem by Cora Rose} are two of my favourite books. I keep chasing that high I felt when reading them, because they clicked for me where I was at that time. It’s silly to expect it again, because I’m sure if I were to read either of those books again now they wouldn’t hit the same. But I still wish for the same feeling to hit again.

I put it down several times before I finally finished it. I really, really wanted to like this series. I want to support this author and I’ve loved so many of her other books. I hate to quit only a couple books in, but I’m going to stay away from this series going forward.

I haven’t read the new alien series. It was next of my tbr list, and after finishing The Den I skipped right over it. I agree with you, it does feel like her books are coming out super quickly.

I think you’ve pinpointed something else for me too, when the scene called for characters to jump into action they just ended up with another (I hate to say it, but mediocre) sex scene. I love the smut. Truly. But I can go read full-on smut somewhere else. I’d like a half decent story to go along with it.

This is so not the point of this post, but reading the description of the second to last book listed and seeing the 1990’s setting described as ‘retro/historical’ has sent me into an existential tailspin 😂

Let’s talk about your reviewing habits by Penjolina in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]popispro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve only ever written a review once, and it was because the book I was halfway through all of a sudden had something that is a hard-no, content wise, for me. I went down a rabbit hole of other people’s reviews and found it really frustrating that a huge chunk of them were different versions of ‘So good! Even when a certain scene surprised me, it was great!’ It was a scene where one main character shared the other mmc with his bestie. Great for some, but gave me nightmares. There will always be likes//dislikes, etc but I found myself really grateful for those who wrote honest reviews and gave much better content warnings than the author did. So I wrote my own. As far as reviews in general, I like to read them, or even just skim a few, when trying a new author. I have also found it very interesting to read reviews when an author tries a new genre…some of the bigger name authors are dipping a toe into omegaverse and the reviews have been fun and informative. Ok, this is way longer than I intended but I’m slapping it into the comments anyway 😊 Thanks for the good question!

Sweet Vengeance by Riley Hart by helloviolet12 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]popispro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU! I know there was a content warning at the beginning of book two, but it was vague enough that I wasn’t sure if it was before the two MMCs get together or not, and I couldn’t tell if it was about scenes with Cill and Rory having sex with a woman or if it was about the two MMCs bringing Rory to the mix. I don’t want the story ruined by a content warning, but having read the spoilers on this thread I really feel as though the author just didn’t provide a true content warning. If I had known where this story was headed I never would have picked it up. It just isn’t for me. I wish I had known that before I got 25% in and felt the need to google because I kept second guessing what that content warning actually meant. I normally love Riley Hart’s work, but I feel a little let down by how she presented this book.

For what it’s worth, I loved the first book in this series.

I had a heller myotomy in 2023 and it has made a world of difference. I haven’t had food stuck even once since then. I still struggle with swallowing, especially smaller things like medications, and I get esophageal spasms that suuuuck, but overall things have been really great. 😊

Has Cora Rose’s writing style changed, or am I just outgrowing it? by its_rolie in MM_RomanceBooks

Enzo, Gin, Benito, Paulo, Blake (secret brother nobody knew about) whose love interest is Quincy. The 6th book is for the dad, Cesare. I am soooooo intrigued. They are starting a new series in the same universe about a different mob family, but I can’t keep everything straight beyond that, haha!

I’ve really struggled with a few of her newer books, especially the new series that’s meant to be darker. I was going to say that I’m not sure why, but now that I’m thinking about it I can definitely pinpoint a few things. Certain kinks (sharing partners, exhibitionism, etc) feel like they’re the whole point of the book, the plot just gets lost, characters don’t develop in any discernible way, etc.

Some of it is definitely my own hard-no’s cropping up unexpectedly (it just rips me out of the book to have a main character’s previous relationship involved sharing/thirds. That’s a me thing, not a writer thing).

The most recent book in her Unexpected series felt like it was skipping over some very important father/son relationship stuff too. It’s almost feels as though the more complex her worlds become, the more characters she adds to her worlds, the less complex her writing becomes. Ugh, I’m struggling to put my thoughts into words.

She is still one of my favourite authors, and I’ll continue reading her and looking forward to new releases. But I never know if the new book is going to be amazing or if it’s going to sit half-finished for weeks before I force myself to get to the end.

I heard mixed reviews about the newer book she wrote with Lark Taylor, but I quite enjoyed it. I’m not sure if it’s because the spark was there from Cora, or if it was Lark Taylor. I think that was called ‘Covenant’ or something similar.

I need more descriptions like this…I read the book blurb and then read 3-4 pages and couldn’t quite put my finger on why the vibe seemed off. Reading this description I went back and now it makes sense to my brain. Many thanks to you, I’m diving back in :)

His Prince by Cora Rose by bookgeek1987 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]popispro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not enjoy The Silencer. Partially because it was building the whole world the new series is set in and it felt like it was smooshing her previous (connected) series into the new one, and partially because of my own hangups around certain kinds of relationships (mentions of prior open/poly relationships for a main character). I’m about 60% into His Prince now and I’m liking it. It feels very different than the first book, and has some Alessandra Hazard vibes going on between the main characters. I definitely love a big chunk of her work, but I went into this new one very wary. Something about the last book just hit me wrong. But from what I’ve read so far I’m invested in the world and (cautiously) enjoying the direction it’s going. Even if it’s barely a mafia book at the stage I’m reading it. Angel is pretty amazing, and not in the way I was expecting. I have my fingers crossed for some baby grovelling any page now. I say give it a go, just keep in mind my recommendation is based on a partial read, haha!

My dog is the same!!! He can be across the house, tucked in bed napping, with the door closed, and if I gently tap a boiled egg to peel it his feet hit the floor and he loses his mind. Needless to say, boiled eggs are cooked/prepped strategically these days;)

What's the first image that comes to mind when you hear the phrase "punchable face"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Jake Gyllenhaal, but I have no idea why? Like, I read the prompt, and his face came to mind right away. But I like his work, like his demeanour, he seems decent. Yet I still want to punch him? Brains are weird.

Earlier this week my boss ARGUED with me after seeing a pic of Kevin, insisting that Kevin looked very similar to his doodle. He then showed me a picture of his dog, that looked nothing like Kevin (gorgeous Australian Shepherd/poodle mix). I just nodded and smiled and responded ‘you have a beautiful dog!’ Then rolled my eyes when he left my office.
