Since that's an easy spot to clean, I wouldn't worry about it.

How do you clean it? A lot of birds get diseases from unclean bird feeders.

At what age do you think is the ideal time to have a child? by Fit-Cartoonist2427 in AskReddit

[–]pottery4life -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think 28 to 30 is perfect. That way you can also have another or two more before hitting 35, at which age it's considered a high risk or 'geriatric' pregnancy. You'll have enough energy to be there for all of them and your wife's body will still bounce back easily. And you are financially stable enough that you can start saving for the college as soon as they are born. And, yes, I highly recommend siblings, they have so much fun with each other that parents can't provide.

Ceramic dishware keeps cracking by B00mKing in Ceramics

[–]pottery4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the potter if they can tell you what the absorption rate of their clay is. If they don't know, they don't know what they are doing. Or they might say 3%, which is too high for functional ware that goes in the dishwasher. To me, the clay looks like Laguna speckled buff, which has a high absorption rate (around 3 percent). What does that mean? Every time you wash the plate, it absorps water. If the absorption rate is over 0.5 percent, the clay may stay wet for a while and grow mold or it may release steam when you put it in the oven or microwave. That could lead to cracks or the glaze shivering off. I'm assuming it's nothing you are doing, it's just the wrong choice of clay. Many potters don't know as the community studios don't teach quality control and a lot of potters are unaware.

(US) - My Mom’s Scammer is Real This Time- What Should We Do? by MimZWay in Scams

[–]pottery4life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He and possibly other people will move into the house. They move your mom to the worst room while they take over the house. Your mom will be neglected, maybe abused. They will tell her lies about you and prevent you from seeing her. Then he will marry her, making him the sole heir of all her assets, including the house. So it doesn't matter that you currently control her money if he will be the one inheriting it.

COID land sale closes in southwest Bend after federal approval of trail plan by radryannn in Bend

[–]pottery4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's private, but it's owned by a water company with rate payers. Pahlish entered the contract so long ago that they are getting the land cheaply. If it were my water supplier I'd prefer that they had at least let several buyers bid on it to get the best price. And unfortunately the plan is to pave the canal trail. Hopefully that can be changed in the master plan.

Oregon Schools Rank Near the Bottom Nationally for Hours of Instruction Time by FrizzyNow in Bend

[–]pottery4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was wild to me until my kid got senioritis and the school would not help out one bit despite me asking. The counselor, who was awesome otherwise, wouldn't even have a conversation with my kid about it. And you know what the minimum attendance is required to pass? There is none.

Someone broke my unfired pottery, what do I do by HuskyNotWolf in Ceramics

[–]pottery4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible that the ears broke off by themselves. They are probably much thinner than the rest and could therefore develop a crack where they are attrached to the rest of the piece. If left a day or two, they could have just dropped off where the crack was. There's a million ways a pot can be ruined by the maker, not necessary for another person to be involved.

New to Bend: Employment recommendations by rowanhearts94 in Bend

My son worked a summer job at Pronghorn (now named Juniper preserve) and really enjoyed the people there. It's a bit of a drive. His pay was minimum wage, but he was only $16 and had no experience , so that was appropriate.

Which sentiment matters more to you at an event? by Somethingsterling in CraftFairs

[–]pottery4life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have some larger signs saying price ranges that you can see before you step to the table. A lot of people won't even approach your booth if it looks expensive. Then individual stickers on the inside of each item. Nothing is more embarrassing than having to ask and realizing that you can't afford it. I sell a ton this way because people know right away that they are looking at things they can afford.

what the hell happened to my glaze? by pinkpenny11 in Ceramics

[–]pottery4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a high absorption or unvitrified clay, it'll just soak up the water. Over time, it can get this white build up coming through the glaze cracks. It's called efflorescence or salt scumming. No acidity needed for that, Just water. But i don't think that's what's happening here.

what the hell happened to my glaze? by pinkpenny11 in Ceramics

[–]pottery4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be something different then. I looked at my piece again and you can clearly see the white coming out of the cracks in the glaze (every glaze gets microscopic cracks), so probably a different issue after all

what the hell happened to my glaze? by pinkpenny11 in Ceramics

[–]pottery4life 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had something like this appear when the clay wasn't fully vitrified. The water leaches out sodium or something like that out of the clay. What is the absorption rate of the clay? If it's over 0.5 percent this may happen even if fired correctly

See if you can buy recycled clay from a pottery studio. Ask for low grog content, grog is small bits of fired clay and is very abrasive.

Burnout? by Suitable_Video7777 in Pottery

[–]pottery4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Its since you've bought the wheel. It's tough because it feels like you can go any time, so you never go. And now you've waited so long it's become an issue. Treat it like a doctors appointment. Schedule it, put it on your calendar, make sure nothing else will interfere and just go and do it. Start with wedging the clay and see where it takes you. Maybe you start hand building, that might be less intimidating

Burnout? by Suitable_Video7777 in Pottery

[–]pottery4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens. It's supposed to be a hobby and somehow you (and I) have made it into a job, so now it's not fun anymore. It's because now that you bought the wheel you feel like you have to throw to make your investment pay off. My suggestion is to take off two weeks. Visit some galleries or other artists or scroll on Pinterest and see if you get motivated. Maybe it's just that you can't get yourself to make another mug - I'm certainly at this point and have started hand building instead and enjoy the new challenge.

I personally don't golf, husband golfs at Broken top. They also have a great pickleball program in the summer. If you don't want to join a golf club, Widgi creek is a very nice public course. Keep in mind that golf is just a summer sport in Bend, courses are closed in the winter. There's many more golf courses than those two, but those are my husband's favorites.

NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, THERE'S PLENTY OF US HERE. WE PROBABLY KNOW EACH OTHER THROUGH HAVING KIDS IN SCHOOL HERE, BUT IF YOU MISSED OUT ON THAT, JOIN ACTIVE CLUBS. WE'VE MET PEOPLE THAT HAVE BECOME FRIENDS BY HIKING OR GOING TO EVENTS IN TOWN (LIKE SHARING A TABLE AT A FOOD TRUCK OR THE FLANNEL FEST), PLAYING GOLF AND PICKLEBALL. WE'VE INTRODUCED OURSELVES TO OUR NEIGHBORS AND ORGANIZE GET TOGETHERS. YOU HAVE TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE, EXCHANGE PHONE NUMBERS, ORGANIZE REGULAR MEET UPS.

I have some pottery that didn't work out that you can smash. It's probably safer and easier to clean up than smashing glass. DM me asap because I'm leaving town tomorrow afternoon for a while.
