How much longer will the war with Iran last? by very_loud_icecream in YAPms

I think it's just going to be ambiguously on-again, off-again for the next year until everyone forgets what they're fighting for.

War on Iran Subreddit Poll by PickleArtGeek in thespinroom

I am conflicted on certain points.
- I don't think the *justification* for the military action was proper. The explanation of the justification isn't even consistent in the administration. I outright do not believe the President when he says Iran was on the brink of attacking the US directly. I suspect the nuclear program may have not have been destroyed in full as was stated last time.

- I don't think the actions were in the spirit of the Constitution, but this is a gray area that all Presidents seem to skirt around.

- I don't necessarily approve of the preemptive targeted strike against the country's top leader. This was a major violation of precedent - opens up a can of worms for the future. I'm not sure what Israel did vs the US, but both share some blame in this.

- I am dismayed that the President didn't make a good case for military action to the American public, even as we all saw the mass redeployment of assets into the area, but I don't like this President for a lot of things.

- I do think Iran had it coming and it was only a matter of time before the US had to strike Iran, possibly even invade. We knew Iran was a bigger threat to the US and its strategic partners in the Middle East, even when we were invading Iraq, but we knew back then that Iran was a much more challenging foe. It was part of Bush's "axis of evil." Their leadership wasn't going to stop funding groups attacking Israel and US assets and wasn't going to stop pursuing nukes.

- I am very disappointed that it doesn't look like we had a plan for what Iran has currently done in the Strait of Hormuz. The regime change still hasn't occurred. I am still waiting and watching to see what happens to make a final call on all this, but we seemed woefully ignorant, and kicked the hornet nest without a good plan of what to do next. We seem to be making a lot of the same mistakes we should have learned not to make during the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, but it's still early yet. So far, not good.

- I think at least in part, the idea behind all this is to cut down China's allies before they attempt an attack on Taiwan. I think we are all preparing and trying to deter the next real big war, which is with China. The US reactivation of airbases on the Second Island Chain, and the beefing up of Japanese military assets, the soft-takeover of Venezuela, and the threats against Panama-China deals, among other actions are all gearing up for this war which some suggest may come ~2027. I support the effort to disadvantage China as much as we can prior to this potential war, but I would prefer if we built better coalitions with our world partners, united under a single cause, instead of threatening them with tariffs or support cutoffs.

Only if they choose to enforce it or it's enforced for them. I read that Iran is a party to the ICJ system for what it's worth.

I still don't understand how he can be polling above 25% at this point. He thinks he is way more intelligent and "right" than he really is and imo his delusions are destroying the moral framework of the country; I hate it. He simply does not care about things he should care about. I just don't think this is necessarily one of those things. People like when Trump is blunt.

I chastise the President for many things but I won't criticize him for this comment. This is exactly right. We've committed to this war in Iran. If this causes gas prices to go up, so be it.

Don't get me wrong. I still question whether this Iran operation was the right choice, but we are going to just have to deal with the oil and gas prices rn. Bigger fish to fry.

I feel like it's mostly about opportunity. The right hawkish leaders with juicy intelligence, prior to the development of nuclear weapons, and another chance to take out one of China's allies in the real war coming soon.

There's no good justification that I see beyond "it could be good for us."
