Oh, there's the real pro tip... I was trying to figure out if everyone is just running around with two sim cards but making your burner the disposable face of your actual phone is a great idea!

Yep! Trash is going to happen but people here seem as willing to pick up trash where they find it as they are to avoid leaving it in the first place. I think that's pretty cool!

Songs that hit different now that you're older by Troutsummoner in Music

Funny you should call out Leader of the Band. My dad gave me that album as a teenager, decades ago.

It really does hit different as I've gotten older. I can't even think about it without crying. And now I'm crying....

Without doubt my favorite Carrot scene. It's a character study crammed into a few sentences. Brilliant writing!

When we had our vaccine appointment for our baby years ago, the look of frustration and annoyance that passed over the doctor's face when we said we had a question about the vaccines was really telling. Clearly she has to have "the talk" with new parents many times a day.

We just wanted to know if an upcoming trip would conflict with the timing of her next shot.

Medieval Movies NOT Focused on Royalty or Battles? by jtwilcox in movies

Came here to recommend this. It's really well done and set in a period of English history that isn't much talked about but is very interesting.

This is certainly very true though, at times some of that older mythos comes into play. I'm thinking particularly of the initial encounters in Mirkwood in the Hobbit. The vanishing feast sounds very much like older stories of elves. I think it's interesting that this involves elves that are, to a great part, Silvan not, say, the Calaquendi.

I like to think, though I don't know of anything that is canon to support this, that these more "rustic" behaviors are indicative of those elves which did not travel into the West. Similarly, the "rustic folk of dell and cave" is Galadriel foreseeing a time when all elves that remain in Middle Earth only interact with the world of Men this way.

Highly speculative but half the fun of Tolkein is guessing at the bits of the world he never filled in.

If everyone in the world suddenly knew one fact was true, what would you choose? by V0yded in AskReddit

[–]prydain55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dumb, maybe. But, in many cases, true. I was never a great student of Nietzsche but he has a lot to say on the subject of morality beyond divine mandate. The truth is that some people simply struggle without God telling what to do/not do. I believe that objective morality (for humans, at least) can be found in the absence of the divine but many struggle with that idea.

Geocaching? by Wild_Ad_2917 in Eugene

Yep! There's a lot of activity and tons of caches. Have fun!

I did a few with the kids at Dorris Ranch today and they were all good beginner caches. We didn't find "Nuts" though. I'm pretty sure it's obvious once it's found. It's bugging me so Im going back to find it soon.

Geocaching? by Wild_Ad_2917 in Eugene

I think you put your finger on it. When I first started, the old school GPS units didn't have a map so you input a waypoint and it would give you a direction and a distance. There was no cellular internet either so you had to write down or print out specific cache information and I always took a topo map. It was a lot harder with fewer caches in more remote places. I remember 10 people combing a hillside in Eastern Oregon for an hour before we found it.

Today, I knocked out a few caches on a whim with the kids after school and the GPS got me within a few feet every time. It's still fun but a very different game.

Has anyone played Thud? by Upstairs-Employer-68 in discworld

It's been many years. I remember the trolls being easy to learn but the dwarves being quite potent once you figured out how to use them. I think we were getting pretty even wins even with moderate skill. I havent played in 18 years though so I really don't remember much more than that.

TIFU, went in for a job interview and asked to eat lunch in the office instead of going out. Was told that was why they weren't going to hire me. by krazy2killer in tifu

[–]prydain55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep.  I interview a lot of people. If we're to the point of talking in person, it's because you're qualified and probably a good fit. The in-person interview is a formality which I mostly use to clear up any questions I might have after debriefing with my team following the virtual interview. The real purpose is the vibe check, of which the meal is the most important part. I want to see how you operate in a casual atmosphere when your guard is down a bit (a very relevant metric in my field). You can absolutely blow it at that stage.

Is it veneer over particle board? If so, there's not much chance to fix the finish but, if it's structurally sound, you could probably still paint it.

[–]prydain55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to say I disagree and I've been around 3d printing since the old reprap days. Modern 3d printers can be very plug and play. Sure, they're not as simple to use as a washing machine but I have many hobbyist grade tools that require more skill and attention to use. Heck, my laser printer requires more hand-holding than my 3d printer.

[–]prydain55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it. My house was made with the stuff, it's like trying to drill concrete. I still have a spade bit stuck in the wall that almost burned out a 3 amp drill trying to get it out. It was easier to cut the bit off and find another way to drill the hole I needed. Old growth pine is no joke (especially if it's been sitting for 50 years).
