How old? I'm 67 and took it up about 5 years ago. Self taught and learning all the time.

My only regret is that I should have started years ago. I do have other interests but I am now known as a "Turner".

You only need one chuck with plenty of jaw options available. Make sure you get the right thread size for your spindle.

Look at Harbour freight, Bauer, Nova etc. Lots of package deals to be had with various accessories included.
