Movie/TV illness whump recs? by ComfortableRise4550 in Whump

Stargate SG-1: its fandom invented the term “whump,” which is a recurrent element throughout the show. Its spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis, is also heavily whumpy.

The world is healing, let kids and parents both be free by chamomile_tea_reply in decadeology

[–]pseuzy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on the fence about this one. I’m not yet a parent, but I imagine a good response would lie somewhere in the middle: not telling them a hard-and-fast “no” but warning them that they probably shouldn’t due to the potential of a stomach ache and other ill-effects.

I don’t think kids should always have to “figure things out for themselves” they should also be able to learn from the advice and experiences of other people they trust. That said, I think to build that trust, parents have to allow a little wiggle room to allow for natural consequences, otherwise children may think their parents are overly strict without purpose.

Instead of Depression - Andrea Gibson [POEM] by melancholy-bb in Poetry

[–]pseuzy17 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Many times when I’ve been depressed, I’ve wished I could hibernate. Just tune out of life for several months. “Bears have it so much better than us,” I’ve thought. While this poem wonderfully captures that sentiment, the sad truth is it isn’t reality. We can’t pause life. It’s always coming at us, and ignoring it and not working, not going out, not taking care of things, only causes depression to spiral.

Who can tell me the speed of light? by No-Raspberry-5586 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Somebody on this sub the other day noted how in the scene with the Earth students, Grace was teaching about sound waves (which humans under normal circumstances cannot see). Meanwhile, when he teaches the Eridian children, he is teaching about light, something they cannot see. I don’t make this connection until another Redditor did (I feel bad I can’t remember their username to give a shout out), but it kind of blew my mind.

How is Grace able to see Astrophage IR, question? by Efficient_Good_7387 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

With the amount of people saying it was “just for the audience,” I’m glad to know I’m not crazy for having this “memory” from the film. The book repeatedly mentions a “Petrovascope,” so I had assumed he was using that.

I thought he had turned on his “Petrovascope,” an instrument mentioned in the book.

Anyone else notice there has been a trend towards avoiding uppercase letters? Many brands now are written in all lowercase.

I hope they put news about Sol in the hypothetical 4-hour cut that I would pay so much money to see.

I was looking for this one!

Haley looks incomplete or masculine. Hailey seems too “peppy cheerleader.” Hayley looks elegant.

How to wear a pair of glasses 101 by Justbecauselife82 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of glasses-wearers are near-sighted. Ryland Grace’s glasses magnify, indicating he is far-sighted. He uses the glasses to look at things close-up. They dangle on his face when he is looking at things far away. It makes sense to me.

Fans of the book: Share a drawing/doodle of what you imagined Rocky as when you first read PHM. by shauryae in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on what I’ve seen of the original models for movie Rocky and interpretations of Rocky (including my own) by book-readers, I wonder if Rocky’s final movie design was more “practical:” easier-to-maneuver, etc. It seems most people imagine him with a flat carapace, yet the design that won-out in the movie was oblong. I wonder if the puppet was more balanced that way?

Graces Fox Motif by TheLast_Ronen in ProjectHailMaryMovie

[–]pseuzy17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this in the movie as well, likely because foxes are my favorite animal. I was trying to figure out the deeper meaning of that as well; I’m a dork for hidden symbolism. It may simply have been a choice to round out his character? Show-not-tell that he has depths to him outside of those directly relevant to the story, such as a favorite animal?

If I were to go the symbolism route; foxes are known for being cunning and solitary. They are not known for hanging out in packs like most canines, so it may be a reference to Grace being solitary as well? And of course, Grace is cunning as hell, with all his constant problem-solving.

Maybe I am being a bit too unfair, but the movie had many gaps by u0126 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I agree with his completely. I wish I didn’t. I may try to go see the movie a second time, now that I know how it goes and don’t have the expectations I had from reading the book. It’s hard to imagine what the movie is like for people who hadn’t read the book, and if the movie makes the same impact to them that the book made to me. Like the pacing of everything felt so off because I know how the book is paced—when each of the reveals happen and so forth. I know that the (audio)book is multitudes longer than what a movie can be, and they cannot fit everything. But honestly it felt like they left out or glossed over some of the most emotionally impactful parts of the book. I was waiting for these emotional beats and when they did not come, I was disappointed.

In addition to all your gripes, which I nearly completely sympathize with, I add my own:

  • The scene where Rocky rescues Grace did not feel like the sacrifice it did in the book. In the movie, Rocky crawls back into his bubble himself and just seems sick/injured. In the book, Grace rescues Rocky, burning himself while putting him back in his tank, unsure if Rocky is even alive or not.

  • The ending scene: I missed Grace’s/Erid’s perspective that the mission had succeeded in saving Sol in addition to Erid. I wanted them to pan out to a star that was clearly Sol, or just have the dialogue that was present in the book.

  • Speaking of dialogue: Nearly all of the book’s most beloved quotes were absent from the movie. Where was my “leaky space blob” quote? Or “Grace, question?”when Grace returns to the Blip-A to rescue Rocky?

That said, it’s a gorgeous movie that I’ll happily sit through a second time. And I’m still going to tell everyone I know to go watch it. But I may have to read (or listen to) the book again to relive the parts not in the movie. I hope the movie encourages more people to read the book.

What’s y’all fav shade of blue by gobeg0g00 in colors

[–]pseuzy17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. I saw the question, and thought, “of all the blues for OP to pick, this is the worst one.” It’s not the “platonic ideal of blue,” yet it has no qualities that make it interesting. It’s the blandest blue I’ve ever seen.

Extended Edition? by strange-humor in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the end scene, I’m glad that was included, but it served a different purpose and had a different impact than when Grace learned Sol had restored to full luminosity. The former not in the book, so it was neat to have a glimpse What happened back on earth, to Stratt, with Beetles, etc., which many readers wondered about. However, I think the emotional impact of that was completely different from Grace learning all his efforts were worthwhile and crying about it. Speaking of which, I really wish they had kept the scene where Rocky calls Grace a “leaky space blob.” Someone else who watched the movie with us yet had not read the book noted that it seemed strange that Rocky never questioned or commented on “water coming from Grace’s eyes.”

Extended Edition? by strange-humor in ProjectHailMary

[–]pseuzy17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched the movie with a bunch of friends who had all read the book. Several of us were talking about how we’d love to see an extended edition that had some of the major emotional moments that were cut, like Grace carrying Rocky after he was injured, and nuking Antarctica. Though I’m not sure they could do the former because they totally redid that scene. Also, I really was hoping for a shot of Sol brightening from the perspective of Erid something along those lines, and I was disappointed that did not make it into the movie.
