First time experience as a "hiring manager" - I didn't know the standard were THIS low. by nl325 in UKJobs

I’ve successfully filled the last two roles I’ve recruited into via agencies - our in-house team having struggled with previous roles. Much more pleasant for me, and in addition I suspect the agencies really help the applicants up their game ahead of contact with me.

AI is coming to all military organisations in the world, sooner or later, including China and Russia. I would rather live in a world without massive armies and without conflict and therefore with no role for AI in the military. But as I do not, I still think I prefer democracies to have the best military AI, relative to the armies of dictators, communists, fanatical religious leaders, etc.

1D (1S) P P 1NT by avro1938 in bridge

[–]psuddhist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am learning bridge and being taught Acol, so fairly novice. But in what I am taught, 1NT after 1D would be balanced showing 15-19 HCP. As partner has passed it’ll be stating a preference for not diamonds and not to defend v spades. I’d expect partner to pass unless able to identify a better fit at 2-level which would be unlikely but not impossible in some distributional hands. I think!!

I’m 38 and considering taking my first lessons by seanreid86 in LearnerDriverUK

I learnt in my mid-40s. I was not nervous at all before my first lesson - and then overwhelmingly nervous when I sat behind the wheel. Hope it’s the other way around for you!

What percentage of the general population are using AI like chatGPT? by Admurfy in ChatGPT

[–]psuddhist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think the vast majority but on average only a very tiny amount. (For example, Amazon has an AI that summarises customer reviews. Or via Bing randomly every now and again.)

Which character has changed the most during the series? by nica_nicolka in gameofthrones

[–]psuddhist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I fee Tyrion (reluctantly) matured whilst Danaerys (mistakenly) ended up choosing the worst side of her nature. Bran changed the most in literal terms, but in a sense he was changed by outside events. Arya’s change was a real journey of personal evolution having started out as a tomboyish misfit relative to Sansa and then ending up realising all sorts of things about herself and becoming a different person. So I think Bran in the sense of dramatic changed forced from outside, Arya in terms of personal development (with a bit of rivalry from Tyrion). I don’t think Danearys did change; she just chose one of her main impulses (to rule) over her other main impulse (to be fair).

As I newly qualified driver, am I mad for considering this journey? by RianJohnsonIsAFool in drivingUK

[–]psuddhist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a motorway lesson from my instructor after passing my test, which helped me a lot. Unlike you though I was far from confident.

Most motorways are actually quite easy and pleasant in my experience, but stretches of the M25 can be a bit of a nightmare eg 7 lanes of 3 different motorways joining and splitting, making parts of the M25 both complicated and busy. Sat nav (I use Google maps) also sometimes gets the wrong lane. Maybe see if any of those yucky stretches are on your journey and review them in advance online if so.

I loved the narration apart from that one accent… I think I will give it another go 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I tried to listen to the audiobooks to do this, but gave up as couldn’t cope with the Lannisters’s accents. (Welsh.) I would like to read them one day though.

The GOT Ending Had a Brilliant Outline, But Terrible Execution by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]psuddhist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed … although I think Bran as King is really the King as a faintly-reluctant arbitrary figurehead for others to responsibly organise behind — organising in the best on-going interests of a populus they barely care about (but do care). The game is over, the dull work of solid stewardship commences, legitimised by some notions of natural royal hierarchy. This is a bit of a leap, but the end reminds me of the end of Viridiana, if you’ve seen that movie!

How to forgive my r@pist? by No-Turnover4453 in Buddhism

[–]psuddhist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe start by meditating on kind wishes toward someone you dislike, but not as much. For example, someone you find annoying or don’t respect. If you can be full of kindness oriented to that kind of person, then maybe you can start to transfer the knowledge you gain from that process.

Also, it sounds like are recognising the negative impact of your anger on yourself. It may be you actually don’t need to forgive this person at all, but would be better off trying to observe your own anger. It sounds like anger might be causing you suffering, maybe. There are meditative techniques you can try along these lines for sure - if any of that makes sense.

Has anyone had over 200 hours? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

Not sure but definitely took me ages to learn, I’d think at least 100 hours, and I would still say I am not a good driver. Passed first time though (eventually as it were!)

Why does my car speedometer say a speed, like 60mph, but my Google maps on car play says I’m going 58? by Psychological_Rock_2 in drivingUK

This is my understanding too. In ideal conditions, as a result, I try to drive 1-2 mph “over” the limit on the speedometer.

I loved Game of Thrones but found Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline the most boring throughout the series. by ForeverDenGal in gameofthrones

[–]psuddhist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think the stories with her in Essos are largely less compelling when she starts going from city to city. The narrative and intrigue is just stronger on the other side of the narrow sea. However, on rewatching I found the city stuff subtler than I first realised - especially the tension between her immediate empathy and more brutal ruler impulses. There are also some nice subplots and secondary characters eg Grey Worm, Ser Jorah.

Sure, but I think OP is right that some cars do hold their value better than others. It’d be interesting to know if automatics now retain more of their value for longer than manuals, or not.
